Prediction Sell me on Port Adelaide 2023

I am somewhat optimistic on Port making the 8 due to better health and better luck in close games (they lost pretty much all of them), but that comes from a baseline where I didn't really rate them as a genuine contender in 2020 and 2021.

In 2020 like Bris they benefited from the schedule and perhaps there was a missed opportunity to make a grand final there. In 2021, they won basically every single close game and history tells you that teams don't continue to win close games year after year (as is seen in them losing all of them last year).

They were pretty rock solid defensively after the first few weeks of the season but probably lacked scoring power, and a bit better health should assist with that. I think basing too much on JHF is a bit silly for this season as he's really going to need some time to come good and while he showed a bit last year, he was a typical first year player.

I'm very interested in how round 1 goes with them at home v Brisbane. They haven't beaten us since 2018 (which they won by about a goal) and barring round 1 last year, it hasn't been close at all.
Good post.

Just note that in 2020, after 9 rounds we'd had only one home game v St Kilda and were still top of the ladder. We weren't benefited by the schedule until then.
We just couldn't get over the line come finals (again!)

Dixon missed basically the whole pre season and first half the year.

Lycett basically missed the whole year.

Aliir, Clurey and Mckenzie injured early and carried it through most the year.

Wines carried a knee injury all year and had his heart issue.

Fantasia was out most of the year. With Gray slowing down significantly last season, this really impacted our small forwards.

Think they were the main ones. Then also Duursma round 1 which affected his year, Butters had a few hiccups and Rozee was nursing a bad ankle in the first month but came home strong after that.

Not the sole reason we had a poor year but having games without Dixon, Lycett, a Aliir hampered and Mckenzie and Clurey out affectedly destroyed our whole structure as we were missing nearly all our key position players at once.
Thanks

Agree with most of your post, except the final sentence.

We'll finish mid table.
Again.

Fair enough, although I would argue that is probably the worst place for any team to finish on the ladder (especially for several years)

Not close enough to win the flag, and yet not poor enough to go down and top up with elite/top draft picks, now some clubs can do that (mine sadly are not one of them so far) but you basically stuck in footy's no man's land (case in point Essendon for the last 15 years)

Hinkley I think has now coached the most games in VFL/AFL history without getting their team to the Grand Final.

Unfortunately for PAFC fans, even just finishing 7th or 8th in 2023 is likely enough to see Kenny get an extension.

Koch and his board are probably worse than. KH in many respects for allowing this culture of mediocrity to set in at Alberton.

It's hard to see how Port can really improve on field if the administraton allows the senior coach and players are a lot of leeway.

Isn't that the same for majority of the league. Covid.
To a degree, the first half of that year gets forgotten to a degree.
Richmond and Geelong played most of the first 5-6 rounds at home from memory.

2020 Port Adelaide were the best H&A team, not just because of a favourable schedule that has become the narrative.

Just finals we sucked

There seems to be a lot of buzz around Kenny (aka Lenny) and the supposed star loaded recruiting PAFC did during the trade.period, and perhaps rightfully so, however I do not think Port Adelaide addressed their desperate needs (especially in tbe key position front) during the draft and trade period, and I honestly think they will ne exposed from an offensive midfield and forward line perspective (esp under.Ken's style of.coaching)

I have been wrong before and am nor ashamed to put my hand up about precious failed predictions, but I look at Port's current list and their arguably average National Draft recruits and their on field losses (like the brilliant and grossly underrated Robbie Gray) and I see no reason why to be excited about Port Adelaide in 2023 (least from a supporter's perspective)

I believe PAFC is going to finish bottom 4 in 2023, and possible Spoon candidates.
I seriously think that you have some mental issues.

Okay Kane Cornes Elias.

Believe what you won't, if the status quo remains at your football club (both from an admin and coaching perspective) Port Adelaide ain't coming close to winning a flag in the next 5 years. Sorry if the truth hurts

Itll be Kennys last year whats a good thing?

What buzz? One article about a non vic team on Afl.com.au and the vics lose their minds

You do realise you're a Carlton supporter right?

What's a pass mark for Kenneth?

Top 6. Win one final?
Put his contract extension and a pen in the premiership cup. If he doesn't hold up the cup, he doesn't get extended.

That's as realistic as women choosing to spend 1 night with me over Chris Hemsworth.
Nothing unreasonable about that, Hinkley has been given more opportunities than any other coach in history (as seen by the fact he’s coached the most games at one club without a GF appearance)

Given all the chances he’s had and the fact the club has made 2 prelims the last three years, if he can’t coach the club to a premiership now why should he get another contract ?

I can see them having a season similar to St Kilda in 2022, will start really strong but will fall off and either just make it or miss finals all together.

Given our fixture it's more likely to be the opposite if anything. Very tough first 5 games. If we start strong, we'll finish strong. But there's every chance we come out 1-4 or 0-5 again and the sack Hinkley drums start beating unbearably loudly.

Port are just not good enough. He overachieved with that list.
