Geez zorks sounded mad in that podcast! Boys will come out fired up I feel! I was worried heading into this game but I reckon we will come out with massive pressure! Win or lose that’s all I want from the boys! They seem to be very aware of what went wrong so let’s do if we can fix it!

Totally agree, that’s exactly where our issue has been at times, man on man we are equally as talented as any team going around so it’s not a talent issue, simply a mental issue a bit like our 2001 team before they went on that amazing run after beating the bombers or the Geelong team post 2006, we just need to flick that switch and we won’t look back.
Do you really think we're as talented as Melbourne ?

I can't see it .

Another thing on Harris is he seems to be overly concerned with covering for team mates. In the finals against Richmond last year, he was constantly going in to assist Payne and looked like he had no confidence in Payne beating his direct opponent. I think this coupled with his own form and potential injury have led to his average display on the weekend.
Payne did not play against Richmond in last year final. Harris was assisting Lester who was marking Riewoldt and no Lynch for Richmond, so Harris was able to assist Lester and Lions won the game.
Payne played the Prelim against Geelong and played pretty well. Acknowledged by Fages in a later interview. Revisit the first quarter of the Prelim and have a look at Payne's first three marks, two of them running against the flight of the ball, nothing to do with Harris assisting Payne at all.

I think the game you are referring to was Payne's debut against Richmond earlier in 2020. I think it was round 10, when Harris did appear to be overly protective and lead to a few goals.

I believe our full strength forward line is the best in the competition.
1 more strong and quick inside midfielder and we are up there with the best in the comp for that also. They are around so its a matter of securing one.
Give us a full strength backline and we are also up there in the best 3 sides in the comp for defenders.

So....yes I think we are just as talented or pretty close to it.

Absolutely. Things have gone right for Melbourne and they've peaked at the right time with a full team. Give us our full team and last week could have easily gone our way.

I'm talking about now.

Our M/F is getting older and whilst we think other guys are gong to step up we shall see. They're just coming into their own. If you look at the guys they haven't got in their side it honestly leaves Matho and our other reserves for dead.

I'm not sold on our backline at all full strength or otherwise . Given though their forwards aren't anything special.

But just my opinion I think they've got 5 or 6 champs which we don't have.

I get what your saying but Harris's knick name is - dad. He does tend to watch the Lions around him sometimes at the detriment to the ball and opposition. When he is at his best he has one-on-one contact with his man and trusts his team mates. Its a great and brilliant trait to have watching your younger team mates. I think we are saying at sometimes - trust has to overrule. Payne played better when Harris wasn't there, Lester is better when he is in form and intercepting. Harris is just no Harris for some reason. The coaching group or medical team just need to find his switch again.

Personally I agree with you.

When thinking about the draft, I often look at Melbourne drafted Petracca and Oliver in ‘14 and ‘15. While we drafted McCluggage and Rayner in ‘16 and ‘17. So we’re two years behind Melbourne in our development.

A little from foxsports article today
...

Considering they’re also without Eric Hipwood, the Lions could opt for a different look in the forward line to take on the Dogs and replace McStay with a smaller player. But Charlie Cameron on Tuesday hinted 22-year-old forward-ruck Connor Ballenden would be in the mix to play. Ballenden has played just three AFL games in four seasons on Brisbane’s list.

Austin confirmed Ryan Lester (hamstring) and Callum Ah Chee (groin) would be available for selection after both defenders completed a full training session at The Gabba on Tuesday.

“They have been through some solid sessions and pulled up fine so we will make them available,’’ he said.

“Cal just pulled up with a bit of a sore groin, when he kicked it gave him a bit of a pinch so we played it safe but he got through fine this week.”

That's if they're as good . Are they?

Rayner and especially Hipwood still have to come back to near what we hoped. If we don't win it in the next year or two we're looking at 5 or 6 guys who've been linchpins for us gone out of the side.

It can change quickly .

Obviously the form Rayner returns to is a big question mark, but if I had to make a prediction right now, I would say I think Hugh will finish his career as a better footballer than Oliver.

I realise it's a big call with Oliver being a genuine Brownlow contender this year, but I think Hugh's ceiling is higher and (barring injury) I don't see any reason he wouldn't get there. Whereas I think Oliver is more of the type who will have quite a gap between his good years and bad years (as he already has done).

Fully prepared to be wrong and for this post to be quoted in 10 years time.

Who are the 5 or 6 that will be gone in the next year or two?

Rich? Zorko? Robinson? Who else?

And how do you know that things won't change quickly in the opposite direction? One or two players taken with second or third round picks that excel & become stars.

We've come a long way in a very short space of time. Maybe it's luck. Maybe we have a talented team in the back end of the club.

I know . It's hard Patty.

McCluggage to me will be a great player in a really good side. But in an average side he'd get nullified to some degree.

Oliver is very good. A bit bombproof when he's on song.

I think that's why this draft could be very impactful on our longer-term future, if we find 2-3 guys that hit and become good players we should be able to transition quite easily.

I don't know anything Bangy . Just putting up an opinion. Apart from the three you mention Lyons , Neale, Gardiner, probably won't be as good. Is Oscar going to become a gun or struggle ? Charlie ,McCarthy ,probably at their peak right now . Is Daniher going to get better ? Maybe.

You can't count on anything or think because you've got a good side you'll just keep replicating it.

I'm aware of that Martinson, your posts just have a negative tinge to them that's all. And I get it, we've been pretty crap for a long time, and there must be some fear in all of us stems from that, but not many sides have been turned around as quickly as we have. My preference is to think that it hasn't been a fluke, that we've built a good team (not the playing team) that will also be able to continue to improve us over the next five plus years.

Yeah we are probably where Melbourne were in 19 development wise. Just a few more pieces and one or two more pre seasons. Rayner exploding in the next year or so will make a big difference
