Chocco would be good I think but if we were able to get Brian Royal then we could have:

Chocco Royals!

You worked hard on that!

I'm not sure why Gary Ayres doesn't get more of a look-in. He's been around a long time. He did a good job at Geelong and at the Crows. His main failing being that he wasn't Malcolm Blight.

I agree with previous posters that a club that seems to have lost its bearings, as St Kilda momentarily seems to have, needs an experience hand at the helm.

Ayres is a proven developer of young talent. He has a proven record of overseeing a culture of excellence. He has grown wonderfully as a media performer and ...

... and this is the big one for me ...

... he has developed the humility that I think one needs to make it. Ayres has pretty much resigned himself to not getting a senior AFL coaching gig. And he's at peace with that. Which now positions him perfectly to take on such a role.

Sometimes I think you can want something so bad that when you get it, you try far too hard, you overshoot and you stuff the whole thing up.

Ayres would be a very safe pair of hands to restore order and credibility, develop the list and position the Saints for their next great era.

Get him.

I've been canvassing Ayres for a while. Even though I didn't fully rate him when he was at Adelaide he has really impressed me with his coaching at Port Melb. Your humility argument makes sense although I think the passion is still there - and he's confident enough in his ability to do the job without being arrogant which he used to be.
Working in a "budget" environment like the VFL has brought him down a few pegs and he has decided to focus on what he does best, which is teaching players, rather than playing politics.
Ayres has enough pedigree and character to be able to look after himself and he knows how to look after the players, having overseen 3 clubs at the start of their decline (Captaining hawthorn in the 90's, as well as the Catters and Crows)
This might sound like a reason to keep away from him but I've been really impressed with how he has lifted Port (don't forget Port are a stand alone VFL side without the luxury of AFL support)

Of course, this depends on whether Pelchen rates him.

And as an outsider, it seems that Pelchen has such a lot of influence. Is this healthy?

Couldn't agree more think he would be a great get, hope we have a good look at him

I remember Ayres being named favourite for our coaching spot at one point before we got Watters. Still think I'd prefer Choco, but wouldn't mind Ayres one bit.

Pelchen is the head of the footy depart. what do you reckon? Sorry just sick of hearing this crap.

Legitimate question. I only asked this because if Pelchen has a personal dislike for someone, even if they are a good operator then the relationship is difficult. I realise heads of football carry a lot of influence but do you really want a club to be run by one man?
I know people accused Eddie or Mick of running Collingwood like their little kingdoms but the reality was that they offset each other, plus they had others like Geoff Walsh and Gary Pert to balance things out.

Pechen understandably has a major say, as he is head of football operations. I smiled as I thought it was an interesting question coming from a pies supporter, with King Eddie ruling the roost there. Eddie wanted Buckley as coach, Eddie got Buckley as coach. How is that working out for you? Pelchen isn't King Eddie, so the question maybe is best directed at your club.

Agree that Ayres could be a candidate. I was hoping he would have got the job before Watters.

Still not sure why they didn't think about giving Harvey the Sandy gig so that he could learn how to be a senior coach as well doing his apprenticeship. After all, Watters was a WAFL coach and AFL assistant.

I will also add that I am over trying to get rookie coaches. Tiem for an experienced hand at the wheel IMO.

HUGE Nooooooooooooo to Terry list shredder Wallace!

I didnt think he was a terrible match day coach actually. It's just his idea of the perfect football team involved a ruckman, 1 KPF, 1KPD, a crumming forward and 18 190cm flanker types.

I actually think he'd be ok as a senior assistant ala Laidley, Eade, Craig etc but his media gig is waaaaaaay too cushy for him to give it up. Same reason Gary Lyon and David King will never be involved in coaching a club full time.

It's understood the Saints have drafted a shortlist of potential candidates to take over as coach, ranging from a former premiership coach in Mark Williams, now at Richmond, a highly-regarded experienced assistant (similar to Hinkley) in Alan Richardson, an internal candidate in Saints assistant Adam Kingsley and a former club great in Robert Harvey, who has worked as an assistant at Carlton and is now the senior assistant at Collingwood

Sounds interesting. Would rather Richardson over Kingsley, but that would give Finey a hard on for the next year or so.

Out of spite it has to be Williams. :D

Harvey coming back with Spud as senior assistant or adviser... or another senior adviser would be the ultimate fairy tale. Would definitaley unite the club. Think James Hird without the drugs.

Spud Frawley as senior assistant or advisor? A little early to start on April 1st comments isn't it?

The club appointed a coaching selection committee yesterday, with recently-retired stalwart Jason Blake joining football boss Chris Pelchen, football director Andrew Thompson and former Geelong premiership captain Tom Harley.

Board member and former Hockeyroo Danni Roche - who won Olympic Gold at the 1996 games - and consulting psychologist Matti Clements will also be on the panel.

St Kilda wrote to members last night following the sensational axing of Watters on Friday, and said it had already been in contact with several candidates.

It is understood former Carlton coach Brett Ratten is rated highly by the Saints and is on a list of candidates that includes Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams, current Port assistant Alan Richardson, former Brisbane coach Michael Voss and former Essendon coach Matthew Knights.

Club legends Robert Harvey and Danny Frawley are expected to be sounded out - although Frawley, who coached Richmond from 2000-2004, indicated yesterday he would not consider the role.
Harvey has been made senior assistant to Nathan Buckley at Collingwood this year.

St Kilda said internal candidates Adam Kingsley and Simon McPhee - senior coach at VFL affiliate Sandringham - would also be considered, but it would not comment on external candidates.

St Kilda is yet to fully explain the reasons for Watters' sacking, which comes after an internal review headed by football director Thompson.

The Saints have admitted to friction between Watters and Pelchen, but president Peter Summers said that was not the reason for the dismissal.

St Kilda's first to fourth-year players return to training tomorrow (WEDS) with newly-appointed high performance boss Adam Basil to take charge.

The Saints are also on the hunt for a new chief executive after the resignation of Michael Nettlefold, and are understood to have engaged an external consultant to assist with that search.
