Trust me, i will never ever think of James Hird without thinking about drugs:D .
Wether he is guilty or innocent Milney copped an earfull from the Essendon faithfull over the yrs.
Only fair that Jimmy cops an earfull back. And they are bloody big ears arent they :p

See the Bombers shoot up, up...
Up to their ears in drugs.
Try to make their players play harder.
But got badly busted with ASADA.
See the Bombers shoot up, up...
Their supporters deny that they're cheee - eats.
Watson took AOD...
But the idiots just can't see
That their Bombers shoot up!

You mean something like this? :D

Coached RFC into a pre lim in 2001, seemed to bare the brunt of some shocking list management decisions, reality is there's been a heck of a lot worse coaches in history of the game, don't think I need to tell u blokes that
Reading some of his comments as Head of the coaches Assoc, I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't interested in a Neil Balme type role eventually. Balme is in a dual role by the sounds of it with Stephen Hocking. Plays to their strengths. They work together which sounds like something we could follow!

The high performance coach, Adam Basil, will have the most important role in this early part of the preseason training program, so I hope the club doesn't rush into a decision on a new coach.

Basil has a 100m PB of 10.21 sec, which shows that he was an elite athlete when at his peak, so he won't be one of these conditioning coaches that has learned it all in text books, he's actually busted his arse to reach the highest level himself (including Olympics and World Champs). He will no doubt work on the sprinting technique of the players, so we should see some improvement in our speed and acceleration next year.

If we're doing Essendon jokes then I need to contribute this T-shirt I found in Port Melbourne

Quite happy to see that we're looking at our options (as long as it's not just a charade) and really happy to see someone of Tom Harley's calibre and character on the panel. :thumbsu:

I've always wondered about getting advice from people who spent so long trying to beat you.

I mean, wouldn't Tom want Geelong to be as strong as possible for as long as possible? And wouldn't the clashes we had with his team for 10 years put a little dent in any ideas about him being neutral when trying to judge a coach for us?

Matty Scarlett came out and said that he's naver hated a team more than he hates St kilda. I cant help but think that would be a feeling alot of the Cats players would have towards ourselves and Hawthorn. Maybe not at that extreme level though.

Perhaps Im being paranoid but Essendon got us pretty good by having Hird and Lloyd tell us what a fine bloke Lovett had become. Maybe Im showing my colours in saying I'd look to screw an opposition team by telling them to hire the dumbest coach on Earth?

As respected as he is for the culture he helped develop at the Cats, I cant help but feel that a guy like Harley is a little too close to the wars to be objective when it comes to our coach.

We've gone with a pretty damn good selection panel.

Blake's always come across as one of the smartest blokes around the club, and being a recently departed player, he knows exactly what the players want and need in a coach.

The two board members have sporting backgrounds, but also know what the board wants.

We're basing a lot of rebuild off the Geelong model, and part of their success was definitely their coach. Tom Harley will give excellent insight to what sort of characteristics made Thompson the coach that he was.

Matti Clements is our "culture, leadership and well-being manager" according to the Age, and so will hopefully have a good idea of the sort of person we're looking for, and whether the potential coaches will fit in with the current leadership.

And Pelchen is Pelchen...

FWIW, Harley was an exceptional leader and Captain.

If Cook and Costa can give up their time to help us, why wouldn't Harley? It's about having an abundance mindset.

A strong healthy comp has benefits for ALL teams in terms of exposure and revenue etc. So it makes sense to help each other out... and let's not forget that Harley is a a paid consultant.

Given our history, what makes people think that any Saints people are better qualified in this matter anyway?

Not saying they should be Saints. Far from it.

I've never met Harley so I have no idea what he is really like. Im just questioning whether we trust one of our greatest rivals, a man that lead a club that had a genuine hatred for the St kilda Football Club, to remain impartial when it comes to the future of said club. I know he was a great leader and Im sure he is a fantastic bloke. I just think it would be an extraordinary show of faith in his character to expect him to remain totally impartial.

Like I said, it's probably more about my personality and what I would do if placed in his shoes.

pretty sure he became a director when the president changed earlier this year

Ok I will give you the benefit of my ultimate wisdom ( nahh I looked it up in Wikipedia ).
Thommo was involved in a business career since 2004, but was still playing ( under Lyon ) in 2007 . Three weeks after he announced his retirement he joined up with the Burke /Westaway kick Butthead out board.

Maybe they should even get an "expert" out of the states or Europe. Knowledge of AFL is hardly the biggest requirement to select a coach.
