Cooly 147 d Burleigh 55
W/Grange 79 d Noosa 73
Springwood 100 d Sandgate 90
PBC 112 d Surfers 58
Maroochy 126 d UQ 64
W/Magpies 139 d Mayne 100

Mayne back to their old habits right in the game up to 3qtr time actually leading by a kick fall a sleep in the last and have 9 goals kicked against them. Taking awy nothing from the magpies as they are a class side!

UQ were very good - played a good brand of footy imo, lots of run from behind and specific blokes identified to run and carry the ball and use their skills out of defence. A very good fwd in #22 (good grab) and some hard arsed mids. Maroochy would be happy bc we felt it was a bit of a danger game with UQ really keen for their first game back in Div 1 for a while. All in all a good day of footy (apart from one serious injury in the 2s that caused the whole last qrt to be cancelled and therefore a win to the Uni 2s by 6pts but thats another story...) hosted by the Uni club. Great setting and ripper weather.

Can't be 100% sure but esp with Cooly winning so convincingly (nice one Macboy, obviously forgotten there is a professional way of winning bc it has been so long..) it could be a very even season of footy. If all sides have to bring their A game then that can only be a good thing.

Does anybody know if that bloke was okay in the end?

I was riding past the ground and decided to stop and watch a few minutes of footy.

There was a ball-up on the flank, nek minnut a body just flew sideways and hit the deck - it looked like he was out before landing. Even the opposition players were calling for assistance for him straight away, so it must have been bad.

Even though I had my eyes on the contest I didn't see exactly how it happened. Was it contact with the umpire?

Anyway they went to 3/4 time break and I decided to go on my way. I heard an ambulance which I figured must have been for the player in question.

I recently stepped down from the Red Lions as a long time volunteer at the club, so its really pleasing to see some positive comments about the club. Many thanks for the kind words smy!

I wasn't at Oval 7 yesterday as I have other footy commitments these days, but heard about the incident that stopped the ressies game. I believe the bloke is ok, a bit messy in the face now but is ok now. He's a tough nugget and I'm sure he'll bounce back in no time.

Deserves a lot of shit to be hung on him bc he was ko'd by the umpire!! maybe not so tough nugget!!:D

Very frustrating for Roos players (and Uni players no doubt but at least you were in front!). Sometimes I wish for the old days (not that long ago really) where a bloke is ko'd, stretchered and game continues. Too much WH&S for my liking these days at all levels of life!! Anyway glad to hear he was alright in the end.

What do you mean Thommo? I agree that there needs to be some assistance but in what area?

If you have a home game, you basically need close to 10 volunteers in addition to your 22 players

Basically having to supply 3 umpires every week is a bit annoying. Sure, in Div 1 and State League they need officials everywhere, but in the lower levels - instead of just getting on with the game if there is no boundary umpire, they are threatening forfeits! Used to just be 2 players stepping out and throwing it in, or the umpire doing a ball up 15m in from boundary!

Not only that, we have to supply an umpires escort. An volunteer from the home club to escort other volunteers from the home club off the field!

Totally understand needing an escort if there are league umpires, but when was the last time a Div 4 side saw a league umpire on a Saturday? They are like UFO's

Not only does all this go on... you then still get billed by AFLQ for league umpires when they never show up, and its more man hours from a club volunteer to try to chase up the money. Especially if your club umpire wants money, you end up paying double!

Tiger G, It seems to me as though the Tigers had 2 players on the bench the whole game and the Pies had a strong wind in the last quarter. I wouldnt say they are back to their old ways. Pies are a very strong outfit and I am calling it now that no team will get as close as what Mayne did.

Magpies to go undefeated? Seriously?

The Magpies got a fairly good run from the umpires and Mayne had only two on the benchn a couple more needed more bench time, not sure if the Maggies coach will last the season with his outbursts from the coaches box - a bit ordinary.

I have to agree with JD's comments. I went out to watch as a supporter of the game and was extremely disappointed with the behaviour of the Magpies coach. Commentating the game from his coaches box, abusing umpires, opposition players and foul language. He needs to pull his head in quickly.

I also agree with the one sided umpiring comments, the umpires appeared to wait for a Mayne player to do something wrong rather than throw it up. A Mayne official told me after the game that they had laid 95 tackles (smashed the club record) for only 2 holding the ball decisions all day. They lost a kid to broken leg and were down to 2 on the bench for most of the day. In saying this, I do believe Magpies were 1 player down since the 2rd qtr. A plus for the Magpies was the class and fairness of Anthony Corrie. He had a great contest all day with a solid Mayne defender (no.17) but plays the game fairly and is genuinely concerned for all players welfare. A great ambassador for the league in my opinion.

The Magpies undefeated for me. I tipped Mayne in the first week as the maggies were a little underdone. A few games into the season they will be bolting! As for the Coach, I have heard many many reports from people in the crowd that they actually got a spray from him too! People in the crowd getting told of by a senior coach is shocking. Using the C Bomb infront of many kids just simply isnt right. I am not aware as to what happened in the Under 18 game Thommo. What was being thrown around?

Didn't think he was that bad, but granted I only saw the 2nd half. He was a bit angry at 3/4 time, but I think everyone was after the little scuffle when the Magpies ruckman seemed to be singled out by the umpires despite being the retaliator (sp?), not the instigator.

Probably could have kept his calm a bit better at that point..!

Absolute quality individual. He coached the Magpie U/18's and was a credit to himself and the club, a huge contrast to his opposing coach.

The Mayne Coach and bench were into the umpires and opposition players all day. Just normal stuff for the first 3/4 but it turned very nasty late in the game. Singling out 16 year old kids and telling them they are soft c#nts and short stepped contests, then continuing the abuse after the match in which they were pretty soundly beaten.

Players from both sides behaved pretty poorly unfortunately, but Corrie did his best to pull his own players into line and also tried to calm the opposition coach down by suggesting a grown man shouldn't be throwing insults at kids from the sidelines, but to no avail.

2 players were yellow carded including the Magpies captain (which would have been very embarassing), and quite a few more deserved it. These kids really need to grow up a bit and learn how to play the game in the right spirit, both sides spent too much time mouthing off and not enough time just playing footy - although its hard to blame the Mayne kids when their coach is the worst offender, not much excuse for a few of the Magpie kids considering their coach is an absolute first class individual.

Love your enthusiasm Bigfooty but are you serious? Not sure if your aware but Mayne didn't play finals last year! Yes, I hear they will be big improvers but massive call after round 1. Let the dust settle a little then make your bold predications but put it back in the holster before you hurt yourself.

Re Maggies coach, I meant to say that if he keeps that up might lead to a heart attack.

Corrie, decent person as well as a great player.

Mayne U18's coach, I am pretty sure it wasnt him that made the comments that caused the issues.

The yellow card was pulled out at 3/4 time and shown to the Maggies, but the umpires looked to be talked out of it.
