Serious questions about our forward line

I'll say - selectors very much to blame!!!!!

Let's pick Stokesy - only has ostoesis pubis - so let's pick him anyway - did nought - 7 possessions!!!!!

Let's pick Kelly - not right - so let's pick him- 10 possessions!!!

Let's pick Chappie - he's injured but let's pick him anyway - got a bit of it but mostly sent in up and unders into the goal square - rubbish really

Let's pick Blakey - poor Blakey the most unlucky player in the whole world missing out last year boo hoo - take your chances this year mate - 4 possessions!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's pick Varcoe - was he going to get more than his average 11 possessions per game this year? - no lived up to his usual poor output - give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You pick a shit team and you sow as you reap!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gamble and Byrnsie in (and maybe Wojo) and some injured chumps out and let's see how it would have turned out!!!!!!!!

SOUNDS EXACTLY RIGHT TO ME >>>>> I AGREE 100%. the comment about Blakey is interesting. If he cries this time I will spew

Accountability fellas, far too many easily missed shots eg. mooney from 25cm, then another 2-3 from him, chappy etc. The one day of the year when you cant afford passenger unfortunately for us is the one that mattered most.

Disagree about recruiting a power froward, we have gamble, hawkins etc in the wings.
As painfull as this is (typing this in the shower in the fetal position cruing as we speak) there is still life out there...

Um, how could we not pick Blake?? That's a silly comment

I agree that the injured/underdone trio of Stokes, Kelly, Chapman was a risk. For all the talk about playing 100% fit players it was just that: talk

Wojo and Gamble have a right to feel dirty as they were fit and ready

Re: Crumbing Forward

I know its probaly not the best time to talk about it, but today made me realise the importance of crumbing forwards. Even if your big blokes aren't taking marks your crumbers are always good for a few goals i.e Hawthorn today

At Geelong we have no noted crumber as Varcoe is hopeless and Stokes (i love him) but was also hopeless today.

Thoughts on if we need to draft or trade for a noted crumbing forward to go with our big blokes or if anyone knows of forward crumbers in the draft

Thoughts???

Stokesy has been out of form for six weeks or more, but he has been a big game player - we owe our gf appearance last year to the three he kicked early agaiinst Collingwood.

Varcoe was good last week, looked like he might have turned the corner, but there you go. I'd say he has another season to become consistently good. Every nnow and then you see ssomething in him and wonder.

We have Djekerra still lurking, I thought early on he had the potential to be a seriously good player but haven't seen much of him this year and so can't comment.

But that wasn't the difference - the difference was the worst kicking for goal I've seen in a final, crappy decisionmaking in the forward 50, added to some pretty poor delivery from the midfield at times.

Hi guys. Don't worry you'll be the team to watch in 09 as well. Poor conversion cost you guys this game. I also think Ablett deserved the medal..Don't buy any newspapers this week and get footy out of your heads. Being a Pies supporter i'm used to losing GF's. I've watched 6 and only one was a win...:thumbsu:

How many bad games do you have to play under injury until you get dropped? Especially when there are guys like Gamble banging down the door

Stokes is obviously a favourite when it comes to selection but it's cost them this year

Not necessarily disagreeing with you mate, just putting it how I think the sel committee would have seen it.

Re: Where is the rope?

10.23.83

We should have put the game out of their reach in the second quarter.

We didn't, they got a sniff. End of story...

Somebody pay the man and lock the thread after this post.

I can't believe some of the recriminations directed at players after what we all agree was an unacceptable performance.

We simply weren't good enough on the day because we didn't take our opportunities to score goals. Hawthorn did.

Re: Where is the rope?

What went wrong? Geelong - and I mean the town as well as the club - truly thought they had this won from match one of the 2008 home and away season. Bomber said it before the finals, we are far more calm and confident this year. That's why everyone saw them as arrogant. Now they are paying.

Geez how many games in a season do you have to win before you declare that you are confident? Poor kicking in front of goal cost us today.

Varcoe is a hack, never ever has he played a good game, he was falling over his own shaddow against the dogs and he was crap today. yet people looked at stats and said he was good against the dogs, he was bad.

Stokes has had a good year, did play terrible today, but we need hawkins, to hit some packs and gamble as well.

trade kelly, hes a great tackler etc, but he's the worst midfielder, prismall and davenport need to get their chance on a regular basis.

in the end hawthorn played better :(
Thank you. im gonna bump my thread on this topic see whether people have changed their minds...

Guys it is sad to see such agro directed at your players in general. You dont want to direct too much blame at individuals, but also need to look at Bomber. He was completely outcoached yesterday.

It was clear within about 5 minutes that Stokes is simply no match for Hodge, and that Hodge must be shut down for any opposition forward line to score well against us. Hodgey does the job like this time and time again. Stokes does not have the physical presence to counter Hodge, who is remarkably strong for a guy his size. Bomber just let the disaster continue to roll along for you, and paid the price.

Most of your other forwards were just OK, and wilted under enormous pressure eventually, but the bulk of the problem with your forward line is with Mooney. He is absolutely hopeless. In a team of champions, to have Mooney as your primary target is a significant weak link. He is big, strong, but mentally weak, blows up too easily and is too much of a confidence player to head up a mighty side. He showed this again yesterday, and those 2 missed shots at goal were one of the turning points of the game (the other being Riolis steal from 3 cats in the 3rd). Having Mooney up forward forces your structure to rely on having your midfielders kick a big portion of the team score. That is OK when things are going well (ie the first half yesterday) but when up against another midfield that is equally strong (and there is only one in the AFL) they simply cant produce 10 goals between them to cover up the cracks at Full Forward.

A wholesale dumping of players is not what you need, the structure of the team is fantastic. Mooney is a dud, tommahawk will develop, and I think a question mark hangs over Thompson after yesterday.

Dont mean to troll, just saddened to see your fans turning on your heroes.

I can only hope that we don't sit on our hands and think, if we had kicked straight we would of won. this side has taken all before it but we must change it up a little to return to the promised land. I think djerrkura should be given a go ahead of varcoe as from what i have heard, he bring that same tackling pressure and could become a very good goal sneak. tom hawkins time has come, play him every round for the year regardless and bring in gamble as a third lead up forward. the forward line would then look like this:

s.johnson c.mooney p.chapman

n.djerrkura t.hawkins r.gamble

i know its a massive change from this year, but we must inject youth and enthusiaism into the forward line for us to rebound next year. sorry tommy lonergan, but you didn't deliver when it mattered in the prelim/granny and the same can be said for stokesy (although he was injured), he still put his hand up.....

losing is misery, but redemption is glorious!!!!!!!

Mooney's goal from the boundary line - I guarantee that was supposed to be a pass.

I haven't seen the game on TV but did SJ go kick chasing? 1.1 and 34 touches by our leading goal kicker is not the right return.

This player bashing is over the top and unwarranted but unsurprising from a number of posters on here.

i think thats a bit over the top..... player bashing????? pointing out the flaws and offering up suggestions is what being a fan is all about...... everyone on here loves our football club, the blue and white hoops and i can guarantee that the same side that played yesterday will not go out again in round one. there will be changes and people can express their opinions......

Easy to forget that the Geelong forward line was woeful for years until 2007 when Mooney has a career best season (which really wasn't expected) and Nathan Ablett kicked nearly 40 goals as well.

2008 the midfield was so dominant in most games that the forwards had it pretty easy. Mooney aint a great player but he is the best KPF we have.

Yeah Stokes on Hodge wasn't a great idea.

Cam Mooney can go and get ****ed as far as I'm concerned. That missed goal before half time was absolutely pathetic/unacceptable for any standard of football let alone AFL. He and Steve Johnson have been dicking around all season, playing arrogant fancy football and it has cost us. Well done Cam, you're a disgrace

Varcoe, Stokes, Lonergan - **** me! Better option than Wojcinski...what a joke. We should trade Varcoe, he basically the most overrated player on an AFL list.

Perhaps not a dud, but as the no.1 forward line target and leader, I think his shortcomings have a lot to do with yesterday's loss.

He is clearly hesitant to shoot at goal. He doesn't trust his kicking. Under pressure his kicking will often break down.

He is supposed to set an example up front, but his self doubt tends to create an atmosphere of doubt among the forwards.

Buddy might not be the most consistant kick in the world, but he can't wait to take a shot.

Mooney on the other hand is always looking for an easier option, rather than back himself from 40 or 50 out.

To be the leader in the forward line of an elite team it is just not good enough to be afraid of shooting at goal from 50 meters out. He is supposed to be a professional goal kicker. There are U/18 players who kick better than him. Just not good enough I'm afraid.:(

Browsing a lot of posts seemingly blaming terrible inaccuracy in front of goal... 23 behinds. No doubt not the return you want, but Hawk defenders rushed at least 10 behinds. Take that from the equation and you've kicked 12.13 for the day from legitimate shots at goal. Not great, but hardly glaringly poor kicking.

Mooney IMO showed his true colours as a footballer. Crumbled under pressure when his more talented teammates were not firing and making him look better than he really is. He is an average footballer, and his crucial mistakes went a long way towards Geelong losing all momentum, and consequently the match.
