Some very weird results yesterday.

Can't beleive that Dingley lost to Tooronga Malvern again. That coupled with Mordi's win over Chelsea Heights has given the Bloods a two game break for fifth spot.

I thought Mordi would be a good chance, bt I also thought the game was at Mordi so for them to win at Chelsea Heights was a huge effort.

The top two kicked cricket scores and that is the difference between them and the rest. When they get on top they punish sides and put it on the scoreboard.

If you ever want to see a case of umpires trying to ruin a game of footy between two top sides have a look at the match footage on the SFL website from last week.

http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-3909-0-0-0&sID=143735

At about 2.15min mark of the video a free is paid 100metres off the ball for two players pushing and shoving. It was tit for tat, both did the exact same thing, yet the forward gets the free. Huge penalty to pay when the ball is in the middle.
The umpire then after the goal is kicked pays another for the same thing. It was the biggest case of 'look at me umpiring' i have seen in two years. Classic example of a game being ruined before it even starts.

If you then fast forward to 3.18, Best does the exact same thing and has a swing yet no free is paid.....laughable.

Just wathed the video and I know the umpire involved well. He has been a Div 1 umpire in the SFl for 10 years and is one of the most respected in the league as his player management is first class.

I would strongly suggest that those free kicks were solely the fault of the players lack of discipline and not the umpires problem. He was 2 metres away and would have been communicating with the players prior to the incident.

The fact that he paid a 2nd free kick screams of poor player discipline.

regarding your call at the 3:18 mark, as you can see on the footage, the umpire is not 2m away and would be standing on the edge of the centre square watching the ruck duel and not the goalsquare given it was a restart. Also, from the footage, how can you say that the incidents are the same? You cant even see the first two

What you posted was one of the most ignorant things I have ever read on these forums and is one of the reasons we struggle to attract umpires to the game.

The umpires just pay what they see, no matter where on the ground it is. It is the players responsibility not to give away free kicks, not the umpires.

Could Mordialloc make their first ever Div 1 finals series?? The ball is defiantly in their court now. I hope they do make it and are more than competitive- good to see different sides make the finals. Keep up the good work Azza!

"one of the most ignorant things I have ever read on these forums"....... You obviously haven't read much on here of late then Preservative! ;)

I agree on point one that discipline from both players needs to be better, but when both players do the EXACT same thing after a warning yet a free is paid to the forward is a bit head scratching.

I also am aware of the umpire involveds history. He has been a fantastic ambassador for the SFL, that we all agree on, and he is one of the best umpires in the league but on occasions he can make decisions such as these ones that are simply given to stamp his authority on the game and make everyone aware that he is there. That is just my humble opinion from years of watching games in which he is officiating.

On point two, the ball was in centre. As it was on the first occasion. Why would the umpire be positioned differently to where he was when he paid the original free kick? I wasn't going by the footage, I saw the respective incidents live and both were exactly the same.

Anyway that was a week ago and now in the past. Time to move on.

FWIW, as I'm assuming you are a member of the SFLUA I actually think that the standard of umpiring this year has improved markedly and the league and UA should be congratulated on the way that they have recruited young umpires and given them the right development. :thumbsu:

Superfreak,

All gets back to the umpire paying what he sees. We don't make things up, and it is not in our interest to be noticed as it only makes the game harder to officiate due to frustrated players, coaches and crowds.

I won't comment on which league I umpire in as that will open a can of worms that I don't want to be involved in.

However, in regards to the SFLUA, probably more than 75% of the list is under 21yrs of age. If we don't have a culture of support from the clubs regarding umpires, you will have either:

1) no umpires with any experience whcih hurts everyone
2) Stupidly high fees paid by players to cover the high umpire fees to keep them in the game

Having said that, from what I have seen this year of the SFL, the level of respect for all involved in the game and the spirit in which clubs and umpires show is as good as any league. Credit to all involved.

One last thing....the SFLUA are all part timers who do this as a hobby. They are not professionals and they do it for the love of the game. They will make errors, just as players do when they turn over the ball. Footy is a game of interpretative rules that are not black or white. Therefore, the umpire who officiates the perfect game will still have his critics.

Remember, these guys are doing their best.

Fully agree mate. Good to get an umpires perspective on things as it can get blurred on the other side of the fence or out on the ground.

Onto another subject...Will Ridgway boot the ton? You would like to think so based on his current form. Who was the last Div 1 player to kick 100 goals? Did Casset do it a few years ago?

Yeah cassett did it in the saints premiership year. Ridgeway should do it. Silver could do it if performs like he did on weekend

No clue re: Ridgway, but wouldn't it be great if he did!

If he gets a good run from the umpies, who knows :)

Unlike the large marking forwards that require a bit of help from the men in white (double teaming & arm chopping/pushing etc), ridgway is a smaller lead up/roving forward and will most likely get the 100 without the umpires assistance due to the nature in which he plays the full forward position.

Probably should lay off the men in white (orange) a bit lately. Don't want to end up like the WRFL... What a farce.

Cousin Tiger, you would know all about big forwards getting help from the men in orange though, wouldn't you???

What are you implying? All club's big men get looked after because usually the defenders are chopping arms, grabbing jumpers etc etc. Regardless of whether its St Pauls or any other club.

Why you whinging about big men getting free kicks if you just admitted that defenders are breaking rules and "chopping arms, grabbing jumpers etc etc.". The rules are the rules and everyone has to play by the same set no matter how big or small. If defenders break rules they should be penalised.

Blues, who said I was whinging? Someone mentioned that Ridgway would kick the ton if he got a bit of help from the umpires, and i explained that he wouldn't need their help as he tends to play a more roving, lead up small forward ff role unlike monsters like dunne, silver etc.

If say Silver was close to the ton, i am sure most defenders would try and use those tactics to stop him reaching the 100, and ultimately would need the umpires to recognise this.

Never have i whinged about key forwards getting free's. I think you need to read posts carefully and understand that the way in which you see things is different to the rest of us who aren't semi-******ed.

St Pauls will go down by a couple of goals without a couple of their best 22. This will give them confidence that they can roll City in the finals.

Your mate Marasco is the worst at the defensive post. He's a blatant cheat when it comwes to scragging, holding & chopping the arms and somehow gets away with it all the time.

Seems like you just gave a description of nearly every CHB/FB in the comp?!

They alll scrag, hold etc.....it's the good ones that do it in a way in which they don't get caught.

This Saturday's match between us and St Pauls should be a cracker, it is normally a really great hit out! Sounds like both teams have one or two out so it should be exciting.

We're looking forward to having a few beverages after the game at the club, that we'll buy from the club not bring with us. Great rivalries like these are what the spirit of local football is all about!

The sad part of it is its teams with $$$ dont have a community spirit and its killing many teams!! and the comp:thumbsdown: 7 rounds to go only 2 teams a real chance same as last year not healthy for local footy

Unless you have spent time at a club I don't think you can really comment on their community spirit can you, Koach?

If i was running the SFL i would be trying very hard to poach Port Colts from the western league and keysbrough from their league add in say a Narre warren and suddenly the league has a new look
