The fixture that ended season 2008/09 for these two teams kicks off the 2009/10 Shield thanks to Victoria's trip to India. The Redbacks' final session win pushed Tasmania out of third place on quotient.

Just the one definite change to the Redbacks side from that game, with Callum Ferguson out injured. Tom Cooper, who missed that game through injury comes in to make it 4 top 3 batsmen, so one of them will have to move down to 4 or 5, whichever they don't give to Cosgrove. Chris Duval has returned home from Tasmania but, like Jake Haberfield, will need a change of heart from the all rounders at 7 and 8 policy used for most of last year if he's to get a game. Cullen Bailey retains the spinner's spot ahead of Dan Cullen who, according to the skipper in something I read or heard last week, remains in terrible form, which is saying something considering Bailey's 11 wickets in the Futures League game came at a cost of 259 runs from 252 balls, against what was almost a Victorian 3rd XI with 16 players in India, plus Wright injured. The positive to come out of that game was a 350 run opening partnership between Cooper and Smith, which may have some impact on the selection of the batting order.

Lots of changes for Tassie, undoing the strange decision to drop Doolan for Birt for that final game last season, while NSW recruit Ed Cowan takes David Dawson's spot at the top, Brett Geeves returns after being called up by Australia in March, and Gerard Denton's back from injury. Duval's exit has opened the door for Brendan Drew to return to Shield calculations, after he sat out all of last season in this format. Ben Hilfenhaus is having a rest before playing the one dayer on Sunday, as is Tim Paine, opening the door for Brady Jones to make his debut for Tassie with the gloves. Wade Irvine is also in for his first game for his state if they want more batting but, apart from Tim Macdonald, all the bowlers can bat so that probably won't be necessary. His 7 wickets in the Futures League game in Perth won't hurt his chances but they do have a lot of all rounders already.

Don't think much play will happen tomorrow, very wet early on squally west to sw winds, but still showers throughout the day, worse in the morning but enough to bring the covers out 100 times.

That top 5, along with the two all rounders in Manou and O'Brien, is strong enough to carry four front line bowlers. Plus Duval is actually a handy batsman, and Cleary can bat too. Don't see the point in playing Christian in place of an actual bowler.

Tassie team as I suggested, except Cowan faced the 1st ball.

Due to my lack of experience watching games in SA at this time of the year, what would be a reasonable score first-up here? 350? 400?

Haberfield left out for Duval or Christian is a disgrace.

The fact O'Brien and Christian both play shows how poor we will be IMO.
Duval was clearly told that if moved back to SA he would get a game straight up. So it kind of makes sense that he would get first crack.

You don't actively recruit someone and don't play them

Wells and Cowan to be the best opening batters in Shield cricket this year. Both have been in Hot form all pre season. Lets hope for Tassie sakes, that it continues.

Another Cox/Hills, or Cox/diva partnership would be great

God that'd be unreal. Pretty solid start atm, 0/35 off 11. Not a bad way to start the Shield season!

Unfortunately that is true. Duval will at least get the first couple of games to prove himself.

As for Christian, he was actually successful last season, I think he took something like 27 wickets. Personally, I would have gone with Haberfield because he showed a lot of promise last season. But it's the first game, and he will get plenty of chances.

The positive is that Cleary and Duval will be batting at 9 and 10, that's a pretty long batting line up. So getting the runs shouldn't be the problem, taking 20 wickets on the other hand....

17/10/01 Victoria 334 SA 7/337
15/10/02 SA 149 Victoria 153 (SA 515 second innings)
16/10/04 SA 254 Victoria 223
14/10/07 Victoria 438 SA 249
14/10/08 Victoria 6/473 SA 7/357

Then add in the Redbacks factor and you will need somewhere between 120 and 550 :)

Wells out on the last ball before lunch for 32. 2/68

Over 27.5: O'Brien to Wells, no run, OUT, tried to sweep it and drags it on just as a rain squall hits the ground - Tas 2/68 from 27.5 overs, early Lunch taken as it is throwing it down. Doolan 9*

In an evil way, Ferguson's injury may be good for SA in the long run as it allows a kid like Cooper the chance to establish himself in the middle order, instead of missing a few, and then all of a sudden playing when Ferguson is on Australian duties.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm a massive Ferguson fan, and am devistated he'll miss the season.

What's the word on Chadd Sayers? Dominates in XXXX Grade (93 or so wickets last two seasons) and has won young player of the year award in Grade two years running (last three blokes to do that were Messers Zesers, Blewett and Davies) and been runner-up in the Bradman Medal both years. Surely we may see a bit of him this season?

Chadd Sayers is currently injured at the moment: not exactly sure how much cricket he will actually miss, but i've heard rumours of October only, then i've heard until Christmas. So who knows how much he will actually miss. It is some sort of elbow injury (but don't take that as gospel) apparently. But he will miss some cricket.
