Should Cotchin and Ellis get off because it is grand final next week?

Still soft he was just going hard in at the ball (seeing that you are a Essendon supporter seeing a player do that might be confusing to you) and the fact that Shiel's was holding his shoulder after and not his head proves that it was a nothing bump

And Shiel missing the rest of the game with a concussion is what? Happenstance?

It's a tough one. It does happen obviously, but I almost think that finals should have a bit more lenience in regards to suspensions. Obviously if you go out there and belt a bloke on purpose with some kind of dog act you deserve to get your weeks, but Cotchin for example would be incredibly stiff to miss a grand final for that. Finals footy is tougher and more intense than regular season games. Especially a prelim. He went in hard and at the ball, as should be expected from someone in a prelim. He did tuck his arm, and Shiel got hit in the head, but it was more of an accident than a deliberate act. He was going for the ball. It wasn't like other bumps where you see people get taken head high. I feel it would be incredibly shit to see a guy, let alone the captain of the team, missing a grand final for what Cotchin did.

I feel sorry for Ellis - shaping more and more to be the fall guy. Imagine if Cotchin gets off and you get rubbed out to appease the footy gods

Eddie was right in saying they should meet on Sunday to make any calls on Sloane, Cotchin and Ellis so they can start moving forward immediately

Cotchin is gone 100% according to the rules but the MRP are prepared to discard the rules when they see fit

Cotchin braced and then hit his arm at the last second being low to the ground, completely unintentional, and tried to avoid head high contact, nothing in it in a finals game, both players going for the ball and both players bracing for last second contact.

The concussion came from a second incident later on.

Yeah, hard to disagree with this. Get it over with ASAP.

This would be an occasion where I'd be completely ok with the AFL contriving a result so Cotchin plays as:
1. No one should be suspended for going in hard for the ball.
2. He is the sort of player that was born to play in this game.
It would be like Pav having been suspended in 2013 after devoting most of his life toward that goal and IMO results like this are so contrary to any sense of natural justice/common sense/historical perspective as the AFL makes the rules up as they go along and change their interpretations mid-season so probably next year it will be different anyway.

You have failed to address the rules. Try negligent/duty of care. If he gets off it's because they will pretend it was from the subsequent incident and that it wasn't even negligent.

Imagine 20 years down the track people looking back on the game and asking why the captain of the side didn't play. "Well you see, he went in low and hard at the ball and the guy next to him accidentally got clipped in the head. He didn't actually get suspended, but he got fined for a 3rd time, so he had to miss the most important game for the club in 35 years. You know, because he went hard at the ball".

Accidents happen. You don't need to suspend a guy every time someone gets hit in the head accidentally.

Both players were going for the ball and Cotchin albeit awkwardly tried to avoid last second high contact, and got his arm, not much in it.

Yeah no surprise you're agreeing with that idiot Richmond supporter when the Bulldogs got carried to a premiership last year by the umpires.

Cotchin elbowed the GWS player in the head and he was concussed and taken out of the game, that's a week suspension at least.

Classic Plugger :hearts:

I think the bigger picture here is WTF was Ling watching that he kept insisting over and over that the knock had hurt Shiels sore shoulder. It wasn't even the sore shoulder that copped the knock - seriously, how long did it take for the penny to drop. Thought we must have been watching a different game
