We fumbled the ball on the Caddy deal but recovered well with the Caddy, Nankervis and Lids deals. Whilst we are very skinny in the 2016 Draft, we'll have picks 1 and 2 in the 2017 Draft ! (Relax flower sniffers...that's a joke.)

At last, after several years of poor outcomes, a reasonably decent trade period this year.

This trade period went alright. What's left for this Draft is very lean. I wonder if having Balme around had a direct and indirect effect on those at the club involved in this years Trading. Maybe they walk with their heads a little higher and bend over less now that Balme is around.

Well he certainly made us walk talker in his playing days

I have little doubt that Balme had an impact over this period, in fact I'm damned sure had he not been around we would have traded Lids for Motlop given our intense interest 12 months earlier and he and Caracella would have been the favs for Caddy, tbh he wasn't on my radar then again, what would I know

Simple Lids saved our Trade period due to unsuspected circumstances. If Lids doesn't go we go home with Prestia and Nakkers
plus the TV trade . We got unders for Lids based on what Wells got , but he was mad on leaving.
SOS screwed us with his greediness for a better pick with GWS IMO and the Suns played it hard . They won the trade war bc of their bartering power , but their head negotiator was a xxxxer to budge.
The Cats Vets list on big wages gave us room to move and play.
Trade was a 5/10 for me bc I wanted to keep six or get more for Lids as well as the fact I don't rate Caddy.
Best trade in years , but we got out of jail thanks to Lids and I remember somebody saying at one stage we could have gone into the draft with a pick around 50. Ouch

Very fine run thing. Its a definite pass, unexpected given our recent history under Dan (and lets not forget Blair) and really this was his last chance in my opinion to prove his value, which was why he was brought into the club. Hopefully a platform to build off for years going forward now.

If you look up the meaning of the saying 'half cocked', you will see a picture of this thread.

Ill ask again, what part of good planning or work from rfc resulted in the caddy or deledio trades? Wells and lids were responsible for them, not us, so taking a victory lap and giving our footy dept blow jobs for being lucky is completely stupid and idiotic

One swallow does not make a summer :)
Richardson has fumbled and bumbled his way until this year where we got some good strokes of luck.
Give him some credit, but send him packing and let him think he went out on top!
Hartley is the bloke who needs the finger pointed at him. he is the list manager after all. As to getting rid of Richo, it wont happen, so peeps need to get over it.

I think he's done well this trade period. Our list going into 2017 is IMO stronger than our 2016 list. We're also set up very nicely for next season's trade/free agency/draft periods. With next's years draft being touted as a good one, we'll have at least 2 first rounders to play with. Gives us options.

I'm sure the E&Y review would have also identified any areas of concern within the footy department as well and changes would have been implemented/be in the process of being implemented.

I recall Balme saying he has known DR pretty much since the day he was born so they probably have a special bond. Balme also said that at this stage in his career, part of the appeal of coming home to Richmond would be to work with DR and also help mentor/nurture him from his own extensive experience in the industry. If Balme is happy to work with DR, then DR has my confidence. Trust in Balme, in Balme we trust! :thumbsu:

Lucky because the opportunity opened up? Maybe. Good that we could actually use it to our advantage? Done good. These are 2 differing things, and we shouldn't conflate them. We still could have stuffed up the opportunity.

Dont disagree, but people are lauding our guys off them, when the one trade we spent twelve months preparing for we got butt ****ed on

Im all for taking advantage of opportunities as they arise, but this xannot be what we rely on for success at the trade table. If so, we can effectively abandon any plans to land major players moving forward (these rarely happen on the fly anymore)

how has going to the draft worked out for us?

So what skill or planning was involved in any of these?

Hawks did the fa deal

Caddy hadnt even talked to us or considered leaving the cats until lids approached the cats, and they offered him up to us

We didnt know lids was in talks with gws and then geelong back in july. The deal with geelong collapsed, and the only reason hes in play with gws is he changed his mind about leaving Melbourne

So again, which one of these was pulled off with great planning and management by our team, as opposed to good luck and opportunity?
The skill is in being able to take opportunities as they present themselves.

Wait .. so people don't see Pick 6 - For Prestia and Caddy as awesome work by Dan and the team ? We got Prestia and 24 for pick 6... Pick 24 got us Caddy... Two starting 22 midfielders for our round draft pick. Seriously thats how you do it. And likely we traded back into the first round ...
We gave up a 2nd rounder as well to get 24.

True to an extent as it's was cats dalliance with lids that uncovered caddy. That said I dont believe lids departure was an accident , the club took a calculated risk that could pay dividends, fair to say it did by comparison to other trades

Nope about Lids Bo as he wanted out to the extent he cleaned his locker out.
