Benefits for Melbourne:
1 Keep a good player for a bit longer.
2 Allow a year to show they have their house in order.
3 May not have as much competition for his signature in 12 months.

Benefits for Scully:
1 Will still have a chance to move next year.
2 Won't have to regret leaving if Melbourne actually improve.
3 Could be even better and command more coin.

Why would a player with a dodgy knee sign a one year deal when he can sign a 5 year 5 million deal, or a 4 year 2.5 million deal.

Surely he makes his choice, and as we've had Palmer and Ward go surely he's next. If he has made his decision it must leak in the next few days, if he hasn't then good on him for being true to his word and eventually he'll pick.

4 The knee injury which has restricted Scully to 10 games this year may get worse and cause his career to end next year

Do you REALLY think another year of "will he, won't he" will be good for Scully or Melbourne ??? He should sign a 3-5 yr deal with either club and be done with it.

Pendlebury did the same thing didn't he?

Has a lot of merit.

This is partly what I had in mind. I thought it was a bit strange that Thomas then signed for 2, but he may be thinking Pendles will leave allowing him a massive slice afterwards.

Probably not, but if they are all professionals is should make no real difference what the speculation is like.

If you believe that, that's fine. But it's still a game of footy and you rely on your team mates. You can't just send 22 professionals out there and win a flag, you need a genuine bond and commitment within the team. Even the classic example of Andrew McLeod and Tyson Edwards, both were pros and both played really well in the same side, but did they win a flag?

Point taken (although I'm not sure about the Crows example).

Another benefit for Melbourne would be if he does step it up even more, you could get even better compensation. Does this appeal?

With his knee troubles he'd be after a 5 year deal and his management would rofl at melbourne offering a 1 year deal.

Gone to GWS anyway to be announced this week.

No but Aker and Leppa hated each other when we won ours....

Maybe it helped having Leigh as coach rather then Craig or Bailey...

Negative for Melbourne:
Wastes a year of development on a player who could have left in 2011.

Unless they win the flag next year they would probably rather him go now than next year.

Not like they are going to be using the compo pick(s) next year though.

If I was Scully though i'd take the money and run considering his injury record.

he is already signed and delivered to GWS so doesnt matter.

exactly...

people who think there is some kind of 'thought process' going on in players minds are deluded...

ward, palmer, scully etc... they all signed on before the season even started... they afl dont want the players admitting to this because it leaves a nasty taste in the mouths of supporters, especially the kids, who are barracking for players who are two timing them...

verbal contracts are still contracts, they hold up in court... doesnt anyone watch judge judy?

Yes.

Surprised to read this conjecture about Scully's knee, in just the completion of the second year of his career. Joel Selwood was meant to be iffy with his knee, but has played over 100 games and looks good to go for significantly more. Is it something Scully had before he was drafted or an injury that happened at his time at the Dees?

MFC should offer 1 year as an option. Arguments about taking another devloping players spot are silly. There isn't anyone good enough to be concerned about in 2012. At least if he stays for 2012 it will indicate he actually wants to be there and they get a year to cement him to the club and his mates. If it doen't work they don't lose much.

Has a lot of merit.

There is a big difference.
If Pendelbury decides to go to GWS next year he could potentially leave as a 3 time AA, 2 time premiership player and maybe even have a Brownlow medal to go with his Norm Smith.

If Scully goes to GWS next year he would at very best be a 61 game player at Melbourne with the unlikely possibility of being AA (unlickly next year I know).

Either he signs for a long deal now or he goes, nothing else should be entertained

I don’t think it’s a good idea, it would mean more speculation next year on whether he would go and I’m sure the club would like to stay out of the limelight next year, make his decision this year and then move on from there
