Should the AFL invest in HD, slow-motion goal line cameras?

ABC just talking about Bontempelli mark and how mark set a few metres forward and saw Eagle on Mark remonstrating.

So mark set forward of mark and arc decision wrong. ABC commentators feel touched and MCGoverns relaxed attitude showed he thought touched was a formality.

This will cost us top 4. Not the first time arc has got us this year.

Better cameras needed and to show the reverse as looked touched from there.

There’s the killer image! Touched. The wider issue is the technical issues facing the AFL that lead to decisions and outcomes favourable to them.

An example is what ABC sports talk in Perth mentioned yesterday that Gil avoided answering questions from WA journalists at the GF announce as it was held in AFL hub and WiFi was too poor to field questions via Zoom. Even though Gil gave an interview on Zoom to a Vic footy show that morning.

BTW ABC Perth have asked Gillon to come on 25 times this year.

The footage was inconclusive because the cameras weren't good enough. Again.
We have goal line tech which isn't able to capture the image with enough clarity for it to be useful. It's down to luck whether or not the cameras catch the image on the right frame.

I think the biggest issue is that there is no clear process/checklist.

I think most people would accept that the technology is not the best and leads to 'umpires call,' if the official checked boxes until it was too blurry (or the frame doesn't exist).

But if a viewer at home can tell the the score reviewer has made a mistake (e.g. not checking all the angles) or doesn't know the rules, then that causes more angst.

Agree, just stick with umpires call.

Or even better just change the rule so we can cease this tiresome sideshow - touched off the boot by opposition, still a goal.

I'd go one step further, the ball touches the goal post but still goes through for a goal it's a goal, same with inside the point post/point....?

Realistically high speed cameras would be better to capture more frames. When they were flicking between the 2 frames there was 20cm + of ball movement which was missed which is where the contact would of first been made.

Yep, for some reason the mark was set a few metres forward and the kick he marked went about 9 metres. Absolute amateur hour.

Yep- so the AFL need to come out at a media conference to answer questions as why there were 3 mistakes in the goal!

1- kick to Bontempelli too short for a Mark
2- mark set a few metres forward
3- tv umpire didn’t check the reverse angle

I work for a TV company. We wouldn’t dream of launching a product without thorough protocols for implementation and suitable picture quality.

We talk a lot of sport and watch a lot of sport as we get it free. My colleagues enjoy my stories about the amateur AFL.

Gillon- you are amateur. Fixturing, video review, rule interpretations, TV coverage all at a very low level for a national sporting league.

That said- it’s not really a national league and commercial factors always override fairness and competence.

Should the AFL invest in professional umpires who don't stroke off the Eagles each and every week? Absolute uphill battle to win that one despite the umpires best efforts to drag the Eagles over the line.

Glad they got this score review decision correct or else it could have cost us the game. They tried again with the Darling free but thankfully he spudded that one up.

If the AFL need to address those mistakes can they also address the shot at goal Darling was gifted a minute later? Can they also let us know how this wasn’t holding the ball?

Agree mate. I said in the other thread...imagine Darling kicks the goal from his free kick, Eagles probably win and WB have been robbed just as much as WC have been.

There was soo ****ing many terrible decisions in todays game, both ways.

Clarko's interpretation of htb has clearly been relaxed, its a ****ing joke.

No matter how accurate the technology there are always going to be ambiguous calls.

One of the many problems with the current system is the misinterpretation of the goal line - it aligns with the back of the padding, not the post. The review system has been making this error since its inception.

AFL never do anything properly. If you're going to waste everyone's time with the score review, implement it properly to begin with. It shouldn't have been this still continual work in progress that's faulty. They should have made the investment to have it accurate and reliable from the start.

Should just go back to the old days at this rate, let the goal umpires actually do their job and make the call - not hand over what feels like every second decision to a bunch of losers sitting at the "Arc" who have the same capability to make a call that some guy sitting on his couch at home could have.
