N64, PS2 and PS3 are best consoles OAT for mine. Honourable mentions to NES, SNES, Master System and all Nintendo handhelds.

N64 and PS3 are right up there for me.

Didn't think much of the PS2 at all.

- No online
- No persistent storage
- 2 controller ports whern the competition had 4
- almost the weakest console in it's generation

Before everyone replies with "Bu bu bu it had the best lilbrary". Puuuleeeaze. By the time the superior Xbox and Gamecube came along, the "console war" was already over. The PS2 was always goping ot get everything that was ever made and then some. Even then, the library is overrated for what it is.

Given the average person would be lucky to buy 10-15 games for their console in it's life, I'm pretty confident you can find 10-15 or even many more quality games on the other 3 consoles from that gen, which invalidates the library claim for the PS2 anyway.

All 4 consoles had great libraries in one way or another, but from a hardware perspective, the PS2 was shite.

My list was based on sheer number and variety of titles....... and rustling the jimmies of Xbox fanboys (because they're the easiest to rile up from my experience :p) PS2 was actually my least played and first sold console of that gen but i do regret not getting to play some of the games until they got re-released on PS3, mainly God Of War.

A top 3 for mine would include PS1, Gamecube and N64. Honorables to SNES, Mega Drive, PS2, PS3 & Dreamcast. I find it hard to rate any of the Xbox consoles over these tbh.

So your argument is 'aside from the games' the PS2 is a shite console? It is the games that make a console, not the other way around.

You clutched at straws with all of it. Who cares about the 'average person', we're talking greatest of all time here we have no room for mediocrity. You just pulled something out of nowhere to try and invalidate the key strength of the thing.

The PS2 had more great titles released for it in 2001 than the Dreamcast had in its entire life cycle. GTAIII, MGS2, DMC, Ico, GT3, FFX, THPS3, Jak & Daxter...

All in a singular year, now granted the Dreamcast didn't last much longer than 18 months but there is simply no tangible way to argue that the Dreamcast was superior. It had some great games, but it just doesn't come close. In fact there is very little that comes close across all of gaming.

The depth was the huge thing. Everyone knows about the big titles. But from there you had lesser known titles such as Okami, Dragon's Quest VIII (at least here), Disgaea, Dark Cloud/Chronicle. It was also the only console of that generation to get Guitar Hero, which was a revolutionary product at the time.

I couldn't care about the fact that it had less power in the tank, it had such a wide library of games it dwarfed everything around it. I bought some 50 games for the thing and I barely scratched the surface. You are struggling to get past 25 games elsewhere if looking at the competition at the time.

I'm quite happy to hear people rank the SNES or a few others in the same tier (or better), but the immediate competition of the era weren't close.

The closest competition was the Gamecube which had a fantastic library on it for something that had such poor third party support.

Before this continues, i'm going to direct people to the thread title.

Some very nice console setups in here lads. Very nice indeed.

I have an XBox 360 but hardly use it. I'm more into driving sims on the PC, specifically iRacing, so here's my driving setup which has been a long term WIP since the days of Grand Prix Legends in the late 90s. It's a custom Hyperstimulator Clubman finished in 2 Pack Honda Racing White with leather trim. Wheel and pedals are Fanatec Clubsport. Brake pedal is hydraulic. It also has an 8 speed gated SST Lightning shifter down next to the left leg and has TrackIR head tracking. As well as iRacing it runs pretty much every racing sim ever released on PC, plus things like Daytona and Sega Rally through emulators. It also runs GT4 in triple screen mode using the PCSX2 PS2 emulator and goes as far back as Hard Drivin' on MAME. The screens are 10 years old now but I'm not going to update them as I'm waiting for the retail release of the Oculus Rift. Will also add motion simulation with DBox Rams but they're too expensive at the moment. Would cost in the vicinity of 6K to add motion. Pics are a bit shit but you can still see what it's like.

Good thread this one!
