Round 7 v Bears by Nunez

Round 7 saw a tense contest, and one that would go down in the history books as one of the most exciting games of the season. The first half was lopsided, with the Bears absolutely dominating. Led by Doctor Gero, the Bears got on top, kicking away to a 28 point lead. All hope looked lost and the Rats (SarahSmiles) forgot how to kick straight. Until the Second half began. Goals left and right from the likes of Magus, Kirkswan and philreich meant a seemingly impassable margin bad been dropped to 12 points. The fourth quarter was one sided. The Rats midfielders dominated and kicked away, winning by 7 points, but led comfortably in the final minutes. Philreich and GotTheGoodes were extremely damaging in the midfield, while SarahSmiles had 9 shots, but snagged only 3.

Round 8 v Furies by Nunez

Round 8 One word sums up round 8. Heartbreak. A seesawing contest between the Furies and Swamprats told a similar story to round 7. The Furies put the pedal to the metal and absolutely dominated. Half back Nunez was a shadow of his former self while Sataris finished with zero touches. Half way through the second quarter, the Margin was as high as 30 points. Some SarahSmiles magic kept the Rats in touch but it wasn’t looking good. Spiritual leader and all round' good guy BRAB ran into the field at half time to give a pep talk (only to be stabbed by Firestarter, but that’s for a different time), and morale changed. The Rats mids turned it on, and managed a huge six goals to one quarter. The Furies looked like the softies they are known to me. Alas, fairytales aren’t always real, and in an incredibly tense quarter, the one and only goal was scored by Jack Bero, and the game was iced.

Round 9 vs Roys by Sparkle

One of, if not the best team performances came during the Swamprats Round 9 matchup with the Roys at Renown Park.

After an exciting build-up, as has long been standard when the traditional rivals meet, the Swamprats were slow out of the box, allowing the Roys to take a 21-point lead just 7 ½ minutes into the first quarter. philreich kicked the Swamprats first goal 10 minutes into the quarter, and the Rats kicked another three for the quarter to put the Swamprats a one-point lead at quarter time

The Swamprats carried the momentum they gained into the second quarter, and extended their lead to 27 points by the half time break, with the Roys providing little scoring resistance. However, the Roys maintained the Swamprats well after the main break, and a low scoring quarter saw the Rats take a 29-point lead into three quarter time

The spark returned to the Rats in the last quarter, and an exciting last quarter proved the Roys were no match for the defending premiers, as the lead grew out to 47 points, the biggest led for the match and the final winning margin. The Swamprats completed a 68-point turnaround following the opening scoring blitz by the Roys. @awesomedal kicked five goals and SarahSmiles kicked three, while Firestarter had 28 possessions and Sparkle was dominant in the ruck.

Round 10 vs Demons by Sparkle

The Swamprats returned to the Underground Stadium to face the ladder leading Demons. While the build-up during the week was much quieter than the previous weeks matchup, anticipation for the match was high among the Swamprats faithful

After another slow start by the Rats, LukeParkerno1 eventually kicked the Rats first goal after 13 minutes of play. The Rats then gained the ascendancy throughout the remainder of the first quarter, taking a 23-point lead into the first break. The strong performance continued into the second quarter, as the Rats lead grew out to a staggering 38 points, especially when considering the strength of their opponent. However, the Demons refused to lie down and brought the margin back to 20-points at half time

While an early goal to Magus extended the Swamprats margin back out to 26 points, the Demons continued to cut the Swamprats lead, and despite the quarter being much more low scoring than the two preceding it, the lead was down to just 13 points in favour of the Swamprats. The Demons charge continued in the last quarter as the strong resistance by the Swamprats began to fade, and the Demons took the lead by 6 points late in the match. SarahSmiles turned to hero mode in the last moments of the match, and kicked a goal which levelled the scores and secured a draw for the Rats

SarahSmiles kicked three goals for the Rats, while Firestarter had 26 possessions and Magus had 23.

Round 11 vs Wonders by Sparkle

The Round 11 matchup with the Wonders was long anticipated within the Sweet FA community, as Swamprats stalwart Ant Bear made his return to the Underground Stadium as a member of the West Coast Wonders.

Once again, the match began slowly for the Swamprats, who conceded the first goal to the Wonders. The Swamprats were able to hit the scoreboard sporadically throughout the quarter, the Wonders lead growing to 24 points before a late goal to SarahSmiles brought the margin back to three straight kicks at the main break. The second quarter was high scoring, and despite some early scoreboard pressure from the Rats, the Wonders lead remained at 19 points 8 ½ minutes into the quarter. The Swamprats then took control, kicking seven goals to go with their earlier three for a 10-goal quarter and a 13-point lead at half time.

The match remained steady throughout the third quarter, an even period of play saw the Rats grow their lead to 20 points at the final break (although it did grow to as much as 26). Drama ensued within the final quarter, as pressure from the Wonders resulted in the Swamprats lead twice being cut to 1 point, but after a scoreless period of five minutes, the Swamprats kicked three goals in three minutes to seal a fantastic victory, winning by 19 points

The strong combination of the Swamprats young duo, full forward SarahSmiles and ruckman Sparkle, continued to grow against the Wonders. SarahSmiles kicked 7 goals from 7 kicks in a fantastic display of Qooty, while Sparkle was dominant around the ground with 33 possessions and 21 hitouts.

Round 12 vs Royals by Sparkle

The Swamprats returned for their third match in a row at the Underground Stadium, this time facing the Gold City Royals. Coming off the excellent victory against the Wonders, the Swamprats looked to carry the momentum gained into the matchup with the Royals

The Swamprats looked flat in the first quarter, the previous two weeks matchups appearing to take a toll, as the Royals took an 11-point lead at quarter time, the margin much smaller than it could have been if the Royals were on target in front of goals. The Rats continued to stagger throughout the second quarter as the Royals lead grew to 23 points. Goals to LukeParkerno1, philreich and @EliteFingerTwirler brought the margin back to 5 points, but a late surge by the Wonders brought the margin back up to 20 points heading into the main break’

The Swamprats kicked into gear during the third quarter, an early onslaught brought the margin back to one point before SarahSmiles put the Swamprats in front, the lead staying fairly steady for the Swamprats as they went into three quarter time 6 points in front. The lead grew out to 12 points early in the quarter, but the Royals rallied and kicked five goals throughout the remainder of the quarter as the Swamprats resigned to a 22-point loss

Round 13 vs Las Vegas Bears by Sparkle

The Swamprats came from six goals down to take victory in the first Grand Final rematch of Season 28 at the Alberton Oval, but this time the Rats took the lift up to the Stadium in the Sky to face the Bears. After being overrun by the Royals in Round 12, the Rats were eager to get back on the winners list and head downstairs with a win.

The game started positively for the Rats with SarahSmiles kicking the first goal inside the first two minutes of the match, and after seesawing for most of the quarter, the Rats extended their lead 14 points before a late goal to the Bears brought the margin back to 7 points heading into quarter time. Once again the Swamprats kicked the first goal of the quarter, this time through sataris, and the lead reached a game high 15 points before the Bears broke through the Swamprats resistance and kicked three goals to take a 2-point lead into the main break.

The Bears started the third quarter well and extended their lead to 15 points midway through the quarter, but in a reverse of the second quarter, the Swamprats rallied to kick four goals without reply from the Bears, and went into the three quarter time break holding an 11-point advantage. Within 90 seconds of the fourth quarter the Bears had wiped the deficit and taken the lead, and in a low scoring quarter the Swamprats regained and held the lead until the 11th minute when Las Vegas levelled the scores, and the Bears momentum grew as they kicked 2 goals 1 to no score in the back half of the quarter to take a 13-point win.

sataris played well for the Swamprats, kicking two goals and having 25 possessions, while full-forward SarahSmiles kicked three goals.

Round 14 vs Baghdad Bombers by Sparkle

Despite suffering two straight losses, the spirits of the Swamprats remained high throughout an exciting build-up for the Round 14 match with the Baghdad Bombers.

However, the Swamprats would be forgiven for feeling deflated after the Bombers jumped to a 20-point lead after 11 ½ minutes, with a goal to the Swamprats not coming until the 16 ½ minute mark. The Rats did well to reduce the lead of the dominant Bombers to 5 points at quarter time. Elite Finger Twirler kicked an early goal which levelled the scores, and the lead continued to change throughout the quarter, although a late burst extended the Swamprats lead to 16 points at half time.

Magus extended the Swamprats lead with a goal just 26 seconds into the quarter, and the lead hit a game high 27 points at the 7 ½ minute mark of the quarter. The Bombers continued to resist the Swamprats momentum through the middle stages of the quarter, but eventually the Swamprats broke through and kicked into top gear, 5 goals in 6 minutes extending the Rats lead to a mammoth 45 points (a 65-point turnaround from the Bombers early lead) before a late Bombers goal cut the margin to 39 points at the final break.

Although teams have come back from similar positions in Qooty matches before, the last quarter was played as a mere formality with the Swamprats holding a sizeable lead throughout most of the quarter, two late goals to the Bombers bringing the margin back to 27 points, where it remained at the final siren.

philreich was best on ground for the Swamprats with 23 possessions and two goals, while LukeParkerno1 and Elite Finger Twirler kicked three goals each as the Swamprats returned to the winners list.

Round 15 vs East Side Hawks by Sparkle

The Swamprats reached the Round 15 match with the East Side Hawks with an optimistic feeling following the strong victory against the Bombers the previous week, and that feeling continued as the match in Istanbul, Turkey (part of the SFA’s annual International Round) began.

Contrary to the early phases of many of the Rats previous outings, they were ruthless against the Hawks, sprinting to a 33-point lead after 12 ½ minutes of gameplay without letting the Hawks score, and while the Swamprats remained scoreless for the rest of the quarter, the Hawks only managed three behinds. The second quarter begun in similar fashion, as an early onslaught blew the margin out to 50 points before the Hawks kicked their first goal of the match 6 ½ minutes into the second quarter. edgie kicked a goal which put the Swamprats a game-high 52 points in front close to the 9-minute mark of the quarter, but the Hawks, determined not to be demolished by the Swamprats strung scoring plays together and cut the margin to 22 points at the main break.

An early goal to Sparkle extended the Swamprats lead at the beginning of the third quarter but it was met with a quick reply from the Hawks, who cut the margin to just 10 points at the 10 ½ minute mark of the quarter. The Swamprats steadied and took the margin back out to four goals and a late goal to the Hawks saw the Rats take a 17-point advantage into three quarter time.

While the Swamprats held steady throughout the early phases of the final quarter, the Hawks were not prepared to lie down, and stormed back to within three points of the Swamprats as late as 20 minutes into the final quarter, coming close to turning around their earlier 52-point deficit. With the clock winding down, edgie and Elite Finger Twirler combined to kick three goals in 90 seconds and propel the Swamprats to an 18-point win.

GotTheGoodes had 26 possessions and kicked a goal for the Swamprats, edgie was brilliant with six goals from ten scoring shots playing in the forward pocket, while the duo of SarahSmiles and Sparkle once again combined, kicking three goals each in the win.

Round 16 vs Coney Island Warriors by Sparkle

Heading into the final round, the Swamprats returned home to the Underground Stadium needing a win to be a chance of securing top spot. They would face the Coney Island Warriors, who needed a win to be a chance of making the finals. Despite allowing the Hawks to practically wipe the large deficit they faced in previous weeks matchup, the Swamprats were buoyed by their ability to resist the momentum of the opposition and win in a close match.

As they did a week prior, the Swamprats burst out of the gates and raced to a 22-point lead 11 minutes into the first quarter, and the Warriors provided little resistance as the lead grew out to 36 points at the end of the quarter. The Warriors mounted a mini-comeback throughout the early and middle stages of the second quarter and were able to bring the margin back to 19 points 17 ½ minutes into the quarter, before the Swamprats, through LukeParkerno1, philreich and Power Raid kicked the final three goals of the quarter to push the lead back out to 37 points at the half time break.

The third quarter remained steady as the teams went close to goal-to-goal, the Swamprats holding a comfortable lead and the Warriors struggling to find the goals. The Swamprats extended their lead to 45 points and went into three quarter time with a 34-point advantage. The last quarter was played in a similar fashion, the Rats doing enough to keep the game under control whilst also preparing for their first final. The Rats didn’t kick a goal in the final quarter while the Warriors kicked three, as the Swamprats ended the regular season with a 19-point victory.

Nunez, philreich Power Raid and Sparkle each had over 20 possessions, while SarahSmiles kicked four goals and Power Raid kicked three in a best on ground performance.

The Las Vegas Bears defeated the Mount Buller Demons, who were in top spot heading into the final round, and the Swamprats win against the Warriors and superior percentage over the Fighting Furies saw the Rats claim the Season 28 Minor Premiership.
