Excited to see who wins the inaugural "Swamprats song of the year" award!

I'm excited to see who gets completely Fevola'd tonight.

My money is on ant555 letting rip with a tirade of abuse towards Quillon McLachlan and the SFA board of directors.

Won't be me as I'm doing dry January. :$

Just ate a sausage roll. I am ready to get loose!

Good evening everybody, and welcome to the best and fairest of the Sin City Swamprats for season 28. It's been a hell of an off season for us - we made it to the penultimate week of the season, and the skipper then told us to take some time off, which we did. Then earlier this month, our beloved captain and dear friend Far Kern was forced to endure something that nobody ever wants to face: a real life fire emergency - which still isn't completely over: we're thinking of you skipper, and we hope you'll conquer this horrible situation soon!!!

As you will be aware by now, this meant that FK was forced to step down from the leadership group, and so SarahSmiles and I stepped up to the plate as co-captains for the coming season. He, along with the other members of the leadership group in Sparkle and jackster83, have been fantastic in helping to make this night possible, so a big thank you to those guys. I've only been back from Tasmania for 48 hours, so if the presentation is a little rough around the edges, too bad - I've done my best in the time allotted :). So without any further ado, let's get this show on the road.

Round 1 v Dragons by philreich

We started our premiership defence against @AceAndy’s Dragons, and started like a bullet out of a gun, kicking 5 first quarter goals to 1. sportsmaniac89 scores goals about as often as NaturalDisaster admits he’s wrong, but he slotted 2 in the first quarter of the new season.

1/4 time Dragons 1:0 (6) to Swamprats 5:2 (32)

The home side fought back slightly in the second quarter, but we still held a handy 19 point lead at the long break.

1/2 time Dragons 5:3 (33) to Swamprats 8:4 (52)

Another 5 goal to 2 blast in the premiership quarter meant we held a virtually unassailable 37 point lead at the final change.

3/4 time Dragons 7:4 (46) to Swamprats 13:5 (83)

We were outscored 4 goals to 2 in the run home, but strolled to a comfortable 24 point win. In a weird quirk, it was to be the last meeting between the 2 teams until season 29.

Full time Dragons 11:7 (73) to Swamprats 15:7 (97)

SarahSmiles and GotTheGoodes had a good day in front of the big sticks, finishing with 4 goals each.

Round 2 v Royals by philreich

We next faced The Filth Wizard’s Royals on their dung heap, and it was a real arm wrestle all day. The home side held a slender 4 point lead at the first change, after the lead changed hands 3 times during the quarter.

¼ time Royals 4:1 (25) to Swamprats 3:3 (21)

The second quarter became our turn to score 4 goals to 3, and we led by a solitary point at half time. In fact you know what – if both sides had scored 1 more point each, we would have still led by a point.

½ time Royals 7:3 (45) to Swamprats 7:4 (46)

Once again, the third quarter couldn’t have been much tighter – both teams scored 2 goals, and our lead edged out to 4 points with a quarter to play.

¾ time Royals 9:3 (57) to Swamprats 9:7 (61)

The Royals obviously entered the last quarter with only 1 goal in mind, because that’s all they kicked. Meanwhile we added 3 of our own, as well as a wasteful 7 behinds. Anyway, it was good enough to snare the 4 points, which was obviously our goal at the start of the day.

Round 3 v Bombers by philreich

We came home for the first time since our famous premiership, and finally managed to unfurl the flag, as the Bombers came to town. This was another ripper of a match – the visitors were clearly intent on spoiling our premiership party. It started 6 goals to 4 in our favour, with scores level until we nailed the last 2 goals in the dying minutes.

¼ time Swamprats 6:1 (37) to Bombers 4:1 (25)

More of the same in the second, with both sides scoring 5 goals. It was becoming increasingly obvious that neither side was interested in defensive qooty.

½ time Swamprats 11:4 (70) to Bombers 9:3 (57)

The Bombers ramped up the pressure in the premiership quarter, piling on 6 goals to 4, to set up a grandstand finish.

¾ time Swamprats 15:6 (96) to Bombers 15:4 (94)

Like the previous week against the Royals, we were wasteful in front of goal in the last quarter. Thankfully we did enough to stay in front – thanks largely to SarahSmiles, who finished with 7:5. If we’d lost, we still would have blamed him.

Full time Swamprats 20:13 (133) to Bombers 19:4 (118)

Round 4 v Gumbies by philreich

We next visited Gumbyville, as we attempted to extend our unbeaten run to 4 games. This was always going to be a tough game, as the plasticine men always give us a tough game, and so it proved. The home side was quickly out of the blocks, keeping us to a solitary goal to quarter time.

¼ time Gumbies 3:5 (23) to Swamprats 1:4 (10)

The Gumbies continued their strong form in the second stanza, although we managed 4 majors to stay in touch at the long break.

½ time Gumbies 8:8 (56) to Swamprats 5:6 (36)

We really put the foot to the floor in the third quarter, outscoring our stunned hosts 6 goals to 2, as we turned for home holding an 8 point lead.

¾ time Gumbies 10:9 (69) to Swamprats 11:11 (77)

The final quarter was a classic. The Gumbies snatched the lead early, and stayed in front until the 20 minute mark, when sportsmaniac89 became the unlikely hero by nailing the winner. We then held on to win by a single goal.

Round 5 v Warriors by SarahSmiles

Round 5 began with your favourite loveable bunch of formerly reigning premiers travelling into the lions den of Van Cortlandt Park. The Rats had made a perfect start to the season and the foundations were played for this to continue with the Warriors on a shaky run of form. However no-one was quite prepared for what was to unfold...

Q1
The familiar thwack of ball slamming into a wet deck signalled the start of the clash, with the Rats getting a fast start courtesy of rookie @awesomemedal14. The Warriors struck back with 3 quick ones before sataris desperately through one onto the boot which miraculously sailed through. pantskyle added another one to the Warriors total and they went into the break 13 point leaders.

Q2
philreich began the quarter by trying to score the goal of the year. Unfortunately, he missed. Not to worry, within 2 minutes yours truly had put one through the big sticks to drag us closer to the Warriors. Unfortunately our opponents the proceeded to put 4 on without any opposition. A late @awesomemedal14 goal gave us the faintest glimpse of hope but we still entered the main break with a 23 point deficit and not much momentum.

Q3
They don't call it the premiership quarter for no reason, and we weren't the reigning premiers for no reason either. 2 quick goals drew us within a straight kick and a half of the Warriors. That was of course before Raveneyes put one through. The momentum sea-sawed but eventually a GotTheGoodes goal sent us flying into the lead deep into the third! The quarter ends with us leading by 3 heading into the final term.

Q4
After 13 minutes of scrappy Qooty, only 3 points had been scored but the scoreboard was locked at 67 apiece. BEEG and Kirkswan both scored in the same minute to ensure this wouldn't change and with 12 minutes to go, a draw suddenly became a possibility. Magus broke the deadlock 3 minutes later with a beautiful kick and we managed to hold that lead until Kabanna broke away with the ball with less than a minute to go. She threw the ball onto her boot and with seconds on the clock aimed truly and won the game.

A hard game to swallow but the unbeaten season technically remained intact. jackster83 was the most upset with the result after Far Kern refused to give him victory pizza.

Round 6 v Hawks by SarahSmiles

The Rats returned home, this time to take on the Hawks. Not much to say here, the day started well but ended pretty badly.

Q1
Hawks took a very very early lead courtesy of Milera2Betts. The Rats controlled the tempo of the game for the next 10 or so minutes before the Hawks kicked 2 quick ones. Elite Finger Twirler sportsmaniac89 and Sparkle all kicked quick ones before GotTheGoodes and Power Raid joined in on the party allowing the Rats to hold a 22 point lead.

Q2
The next quarter started in an all too familiar fashion, with an early Milera2Betts goal. 2 more Rats goals and all of a sudden it looks like we'd be hitting the pub early. Unfortunately it looked as though our pub run had begun too early with the Hawks striking back courtesy of Harvey Manfrenjensenden NaturalDisaster and Loonerty. Despite all this, Far Kern and awesomedal14 continued to pile them on and we went into the big break with a 20 point advantage.

Q3
Power Raid and Elite Finger Twirler continued their forward dominance putting us into a position where we could comfortably put the game to bed. 25 up 5 minutes into the 3rd is a good place to be. However ArdentEagle and NaturalDisaster along with Loonerty put the Hawks 4 points away from us. Panic station times. Never fear however as EFT puts through yet another goal giving us some breathing space. A late Loonerty goal whittled out lead down to just 5 points going into the final break

Q4
We seem to have an issue with conceding early goals. SM puts the Hawks into the lead barely 30 seconds in and we're left scratching our heads as to how we managed to let this lead slip. Drunkgoliath and larrikin added to our pain before rookie Magus pulled one back. However, Loonerty and NaturalDisaster put the game to bed adding 2 very quick ones. A half arsed Sparkle led comeback wasn't enough and the Hawks ran out 21 point winners.

A day of missed opportunities and taking our position for granted. Complacency got us here.
