Hawks website post confirms that it is a 2-year deal that he has signed with the Cats.

Unrestricted free agent Isaac Smith will depart the Hawks having accepted a two-year contract with Geelong.

Some comical comments on here tbh.

He has 1-2 good years left , people looking into this decision way too much.

Its a good chance for us to reboot quickly, when we are heading back up the ladder in 2-3 season the side he has gone too will be going past us the other way at a rate of knots for a while.

Surely now Moore stays...otherwise we look a tad bare on the wings.
Moore isn’t a pure wing, we need to get tom Phillips

He is a champion. He has given great service, his mates have mostly moved on & he wants to win flags. Objectively of the clubs interested in his services, geelong are most likely.

I understand the decision but I don’t like it. Mostly because its geelong.

good luck Isaac in chasing number 4 - I don’t object to you trying but I hope you stay at 3 flags!

He cost us our last good chance of a flag. Can’t say I wish him any luck at all. Depressing lack of loyalty.

I'm fine with it. Will miss seeing him play for the Hawks but he is in the end stages of his career and is entitled to maximize his remaining time in the AFL.

We've lost our over-30 stalwarts, Burgoyne has already been flagged as having a reduced role and it was only going to take a run of losses in 2021 and some lukewarm form for him to be first under the spotlight with media pundits and fans saying we should just play the kids.

It is backed up by the fact he didn't finish top 10 in the B&F last year despite playing 19 games.

Has perhaps fallen out of favour with some at the club. B&F positions are not always well correlated with performances and can often be a reflection of doing the club thing. Stratton was top 10 in 2019 , despite a below average year for him.

His stats may be consistent with historical numbers, but his disposal has definitely gotten worse. He has been an all around less effective player (IMO).

I really think his effectiveness has tracked our team's effectiveness. Players of his type (outside runners) are like that. Disposal was fine until this year, and it was down across the entire list for 2020. 2019 was a very good year for him stats wise. Cattery will not suit him, but Geelong play a lot of games at the MCG in a normal season, so a huge get for them, given he's free from a trade cost point of view.

Ah well it is what it is.

He is 31 and really can anyone honestly say that we would be challenging for a flag over the next couple of years? Given that it is kind of a moot point whether he goes or not.

It sucks he is going to Geelong but I prefer to remember all the good times, the premierships and those long booming goals from 50m (lets not discuss those misses against the Cats!)

Kick in the guys. Couldn’t bare seeing him win a flag with the Cats. Lucky I don’t think that is a possibility.

Icat Smith ?! Who woulda thunk it ?
Prefer he remained loyal but there ya go. Now the enemy.....
Hawks need to pry a big name out of a club ....we have lots of pennies now
Won't happen. We're the big pariah club of the competition. Smith choosing to end his career at Geelong is all the proof you'll ever need.

I am more pissed that he went to the Cats but can understand why he would consider that.
But I think this will be a good thing for the club and allows the new breed to mark their territory and will be given all the opportunities to do so without reliance on the older brigade. This off season feels like a genuine changing of the guard and wouldn't be surprised to see another older player moved on.

What's more likely - Smith has fallen out of favour with some at the club (despite being named in the leadership group), OR his performances just weren't that good.

This is the danger with just looking at the stats. While his disposal numbers were consistent with prior years, from what I saw he regularly missed easy targets (a lot of the time within 20-30m) and didn't have any real impact on games (IMO).

With it only being a 2 year deal at the Cats the guys on trade radio are saying we're less likely to get any compo for Izzy.
A 3 year deal at Melb. would of been better for us.

Yet to read a report to mention compensation of any sort. Have said from the start this was going down the Waite path, fair to say this is looking quite accurate.

Look for a positive in this guys, they are losing Jordan Clark and Constable because of this and getting another 32 year old Higgins.

Wonder if they’ll still call him Smiss...
It is slightly funny that he ends up at the club where their supporters bagged him out the most.

I was hating the idea of this last week. I have kinda come to terms with it though.

I'll say this.

I can totally understand the angry supporters saying it is a kick in the nuts or he has hurt his legacy a bit. There will be a small group of supporters who think less of him now. Some will get over it like with Buddy.

I can also understand and in a weird way respect his decision (chasing a flag over better money/security with us/Dees). At the end of the day thats why players should play footy.

We will be ok out of this. More spots for youth to try and fill and fast track. Not a bad thing at all.

Ultimately it just hurts that it's our biggest rival during his career.

Thanks for the great career with us Isaac. Gave us some great memories. I just wish you no luck in achieving that 4th flag :)
