This seems to be a common theme amongst Port fans - this downplaying of their own expectations.

One thing you can count on from Crowland is they will not shy away or hide from any kind of expectation. They'll embrace it - and with that, comes the risk of failing.

Port - at least under Chocco - had a habit of downplaying expectation because they were fully aware how poorly their players responded to it. Perhaps things will be different under Primus, but this constant need at Alberton to be the perennial underdog is getting really old, reeks of chronic insecurity and concern over your club's position, and is ultimately doing the PAFC absolutely no favours.

The title of this thread is indicative of this mentality.

Wow, it was big news (in our little town) when mumbles broke from his formula of not placing expectations on the group and announced the crowies were top 4 bound!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that we're crap at handling expectation. But they wouldn't have a chance to harp on about our ability to handle expectation if we didn't keep creating it, would they? You can't say that Choco before the 2007 GF, Chad Cornes every time he opens his mouth etc. are examples of downplaying expectation.

Chocco later admitted that he was "playing a card" (direct quote) before the 2007 GF because he didnt think the team was good enough.

It's one thing to create expectation - it's another thing entirely to back down from it when you fall well short.

You are also, of course, operating under the assumption that there were any expectations whatsoever on Port at the beginning of the 2007 season - there weren't.

You can't say you created expectation in 2007, when there was none to begin with. You were not expected to make the top 4, in fact nobody expected you to make the top eight.

That's the argument of Rucci and Francou - that Port compete well only when they're all but written off. Why??

What's the point of finishing above Port Power anyway. Neither team will make the finals and according to Port Power supporters, finishing higher on the ladder without winning the premiership equals mediocrity anyway.

So are Port Power supporters now chasing mediocrity (according to their own definitions) by finishing above the Crows?
