IN: Bell, Bastinac, Walker, Jansen, Pick 38, 39 (FA), 40, 41, 2nd Rnd (Stk) 2016, 3rd rnd (NMFC)
OUT: Redden, Aish, Leuenberger, 21, 60, 2016 (3rd rnd), 26

Interesting to see Wallace on Trade Radio give us a C- for this period, for me personally I would believe he is slightly off the mark and give us a C+ or B-. We have Basti who has similar stats to Reddo so naturally he be our replacement for him and Bell also slots in best 22.

Walker I believe will be a decent player in my opinion as he has had 30+ games of development averaging slightly over a goal a game while learning off others like Hawkins. Has also kicked bags of goals previously so it is something he can build on, unlike Lisle who came in with 5 games of experience and kicking about 1 goal in total.

Jansen is unknown, looks like handy depth though from highlights - Could be the surprise package? Would hope so but he is steak knives in the Geelong trade after all.

Your thoughts guys?

I can see why Wallace gave us a C-, mostly because Walker and Jansen are unproven, while Bastinac has had a form dip (in the wrong position of course so can you really say a 'dip'?). At the same time I'd argue we did OK as we addressed list needs. Losing Aish is the unknown for us IMO.

Taking out all draft picks as they are for academy kids; it's a solid C for mine :thumbsu:

I feared we would be bent over similar to the 2013 trade season, so I am pretty happy with a 'C-' from Wallace in that regard.

We broke even in my opinion but it is early days - New blokes haven't even had a chance to learn the other guys names. Depending on the 2016 season, we will see whether we have won the trade or not.

Would love to see Walker kick 30+ goals in 2016 for a start.

I think we have let go some guys who were going and got reasonable value for them.

The academy bidding system is obviously a brave new world and the club seems to have adapted well around the points system, not getting cut up about trading relatively high draft picks if the points value comes out in our favour.

We have addressed the need for a more mature key forward and a big bodied mid and replaced some of what we have lost.

Given we will take Schache, Hipwood and Keayes I still think we need more cover in the ruck and some outside speed. Will be interesting what the rookie list gives us this year.

I think the club has done alright when you consider they didnt want to bring in 8 kids we have a brought in guys with some experience and a number of years in the system. Would like to see Whitecross get on the list too.

Hard to say. We did just about as good as we could from a bad situation...again. Aish dragging it out as long as possible and making the demands he did leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Fair enough. My mind was just set on the 17 for Bastinac + 38/40 or what ever picks they had. Did we add the pick 26 with the Bastinac deal though?
No it got passed through from Collingwood. When you consider we were only worried about the points we paid very little for Bastinac himself, but only got future 2nd and 3rd round picks for Aish. So Collingwood f$cked us.

With the new layer of complexities added to our trading in mind, we did SUPER! I think the only negative to this trade period was getting screwed on the Leauey compo and that was entirely out of our hands. Sure we could have matched, but I am proud that the club helped the big giraffe get where he wanted to go, it was the right thing to do.

The really smart list managers for the Vic clubs would of realised the bidding system doesnt require the academy teams to have high picks, just enough to cover their kids they want. I think this is what North realised and by result were able to move themselves up the draft quite a bit.

In: Bell, Bastinac, Walker, Jansen, 1,752 Academy points (38, 39, 40, 41), 2016 2nd Round Pick (St.K), 2016 3rd Round Pick (NM)
Out: Redden, Aish, Leuenberger, 1,024 Academy points (21, 60), 2016 3rd Round Pick (B.L)

In other words:
In: Bell, Bastinac, Walker, Jansen, Pick 27 (equivalent on points), 2016 2nd Round Pick (St. K), 2016 3rd Round Pick (NM)
Out: Redden, Aish, Leuenberger, 2016 3rd Round Pick (B.L)

Obviously not a win player for player as we're losing quality, but Pick 27ish (equivalent on points), 2016 2nd Round Pick (St. K) in make up for it. But they only make up for it.

At best it's a C grade, not terrible, but the bare minimum - which considering the losses is fair.

Can't call 26 an out as we never had it.
Overall, we made the best of it. When the season ended I thought keeping Aish and drafting Schache, Keays and Hipwood would be an excellent result. Instead we lost three players and got decent value for all three (FA comp being out of our control), and set ourselves up for next year, while adding depth and addressing some needs. Looking forward to the next 19 minutes.

I wouldn't say they f$cked us, since the price they paid was two 2nd rounders. North just picked our pockets.

To the naked eye it looks like we got unders but to the trained eye we did well because we received 4 mature aged players that fit our age profile and needs and we also accumulated enough draft points to get our academy boys.

Basically we get 3 top 15 draft prospects plus 4 mature aged players

To me the value is in the Academy players, this year and next, still something of an unknown quantity, but looking fairly brilliant. That ,and the acquisition of a professional key forward, plus a vigorous ball getter, and lions-man in Bell,is massive.

We didn't gain 4 mature aged players.
  • Bastinac = 24 years old, played 121 games played. He is pretty much a straight replacement for Redden who is also 24 (though half a year older) and has played 129 games.
  • Walker = 22 years old (turning 23 in November), played 33 games. In terms of experience, he is very similar to Aish who is only 19 / about to turn 20 (3 years younger) but has played 32 games. Obviously a forward instead of a mid though, which is good.
  • Bell = is 24 years old and has played 52 games. It doesn't line up at all, but we are losing Leuy who is 27 and has played 108 games. (We also get Jansen who is 20 and hasn't played any senior games, but that really is a speculative pick up.)
So overall, just based on the above 3 for 3 players, we have come out about even in terms of age (probably lost around 6 months overall), but more importantly while we gained 206 games experience IN, we lost 269 games experience OUT. So that means a net loss of 63 games experience.

Obviously that comes on top of the cumulative losses from previous years and continued significant (experience wise) retirements from this year as well. We may be able to pick up Whitecross and someone else experienced like a ruckman (possibly on the rookie list) to try and mitigate some of the retired experience.

However, the overall result seems abundantly clear - an extremely young / inexperienced list (among the youngest / least experienced in the League) is actually going to get even younger / less experienced next year yet again.

I am not trying to burst anyone's bubble or blame the Club's drafting strategy on this. There is a myriad of complex reasons and a number of them are not in the Club's control. But I think we all need to get some perspective. Unless we have a very good run with injuries, expect us to struggle again next year.
