Alternately, I'd argue I can respect their progress without wanting them to win, and will happily congratulate them if they do win, it's just that I don't want them to win.

Absolutely you can. I have no issue with people not going for Freo, I myself said I was pretty neutral on the main board, hell I might even find myself leaning towards the Hawks on the day. My responses are more aimed at people who are going way, way over the top with ridiculous nonsense like "never come to a derby again", "its disgraceful", "you're not a true Eagles supporter if you don't hate Freo" and other such crap.

I got a horrible, horrible feeling that they're on the verge of a dynasty.

Na I wouldn't go that far, a fair of their players are getting on, and with a hardder draw next year they won't have it all their way. Throw in a few injuries (not that I'm wishing that apon any players) and it can all change pretty quickly. They still don't really have anyone to cover for Pav when he retires, and their ruck stocks are average at best minus Sandi. Not sure about Key defenders either once Macfarlane goes, they could struggle to have a dominant spine in a few years and by the time some young guys grow into those positions, a fair chunk of their "stars" will be past it.

Some of their supporters think the same way! I asked a die hard if she was getting nervous about the game yet? She replied no and that she could have gone as she had a ticket but decided not to. Why not go? It's taken you 19 seasons to get to a GF? To which she replied I will go next year, we will be in the GF again.

I like her confidence, but you wouldn't bet on being in a GF 12 months out, anything could happen between now and then!

God this hard hard to say..for 19 years I have not had a single purple thing in my house, husband and kids either..we girls have never even worn purple clothes or purple nail polish and I have never allowed a purple cushion or blankie or anything in the house..absolute truth.
But the day had to come when they finally made a Grand Final, I've always hoped it wasn't till I was too old and dribbling that I wouldn't even know or recognise footy anymore..but there you go, it's this year and since they are playing now in a Grannie I'm glad that it's while Pav is still there, I'll be happy for him. Acks.

I really never thought I would feel this way,its kind of like my puppy dying, but I think its time for a changing of the guard.Hopefully the era of the hawks, swans, pies, cats is coming to an end.Just unfortunate that the purple scum are up there right now.
So while I will never say that Im hoping the shockers win I guess Im hoping hawthorn lose.
I feel so dirty, its a crying game moment
I need a drink

It doesn't but it should.

A rivalry either exists or it doesn't, you don't flip flop based on the situation. Wishing them well and hoping they win a Grand Final is, ironically, the sort of fickleness associated with morons or 6 year olds.

Bullshit. I have a rivalry with my brother. But if I'm watching him compete in something I cheer for him, not the other competitors.

That's funny because my daughter has never had anything purple either! I used to show her purple tops or skirts at the shops when she was little and she would say " I'm not wearing that, it's dockers colours!"

And she doesn't even like football!

My grandchildren are the same. When in Kindy, my grandson would only ever use blue and yellow to colour. When he saw people on the street wearing the purple gear, he would stare and say (usually in a very loud and disgusted voice ) yuck, those are Dockers !

Haha, the other night when the pre-lim was on, my 4 year old son looked at the TV and turned to me and says" Daddy, you don't like the Dockers do you" I was a little suprised cause I don't really remember ever specifically telling him I don't like them, maybe he sees the disgust on my face any time they are on TV or all the Eagles memorabillia around the house or my wardrobe full on guernseys and nothing Freo, as it should be. I thought it was pretty funny and just replyed "no mate I don't" later on my wife says" I heard what he said to you, you can't push your hate of things onto him" Like f**k I can't thats my job isn't it??

On a more important issue, I understand that St Vincent DePaul has urgently requested the Barnett Govt and the public provide it with funds to cope with the expected influx of requests for special assistance from the 20,0000 odd Dockers supporters who have spent their life savings and maxed their credit cards out by going to Melbourne. So please give generously for the underprivileged.

From a garlic muncher............ delicious irony seeing as you lot all bankrupted yourselves for tickets and bus fares to the granny last weekend

So you see Freo as being like family. We're obviously at very different ends of the spectrum as I find that bizarre but there you go.

Out of curiosity, if a dynasty happens will you be supporting them even if it means they win four Premierships and overtake the Eagles as WA's most successful AFL team? Hypothetically of course.

Just wondering if most of you want freo to win(wa team) or if you can't stand freo so you are on the hawks this weekend?

FWIW I like many cats fans are ignoring our hatred of the hawks to wish they smash freo( and not because the hawks are Victorian but because Lyon, Crowley, ballantyne are just that despised over here)

Good luck for 2014 season :thumbsu:

No you dim wit. I'm not even supporting Freo this weekend.

I was responding to your ridiculous assertion that a rivalry can not be conditional, of course it can.

And that's why I have no problem with others here wanting to support Freo for their own reasons. Who are you to tell them they're less of a supporter than you? As long as they fully support West Coast in every single game they are actually playing in, then they are a West Coast supporter.

I assume you've never missed an Eagles home game being such a staunch supporter.

No you dim wit. I never said anything about them being less of an Eagles supporter. Go back and have a re-read like a good lad, you might get it second time round ;)

In case that's too difficult, I said that I don't understand somebody supporting their local rivals in any situation. That doesn't mean they support the Eagles less, I'm sure they're still 100% behind our team, but the concept of some becoming 'Freagles' decked out in purple tomorrow is just wrong imo. I'm not fickle like that.

I get it. But you and others are talking about any Eagles supporters that want Fremantle to win as being "Shameful" and that they "Should never attend another Derby". Turn it up.

their ruck stocks are average at best minus Sandi.
Griffin and Clarke both performed more than capably this year, and they have a couple more developing rucks in the WAFL. Well stocked IMO.

Agree about tall defenders, but i suspect they will trade for ready made KPP this year and next. Jesse White perhaps as a cheap effective KPF and they can give up their first round pick for a KPD.

I think their list is in very good shape and they clearly don't need Pav, Sandi and McPharlin that badly, otherwise they wouldn't be in the GF this year.

They might however miss Pav's presence as a leader (would have to be immense) around the club if he were to retire without a flag.
