So this eminent jurist Justice Gillard has been appointed by the AFL to investigate the Eagles...

But why now?

Because Cousins had a little problem with the police that was ultimately proved to be without merit. But the Eagles sacked Cousins anyway, so what more did Fitzpatrick want them to do?

Is Fitzpatrick looking to find some basis to penalise the Eagles? And why - because of this "drug culture"?

But isn't this bloke the head of the organisation that has a policy that essentially says it's none of the club's business whether their players are on drugs? The organisation that tests the players and has information on their drug use that refuses to provide it to the clubs...

This will be very interesting.

Ron Evans impartial leadership of the AFL is being missed already.

This is an interesting question as there has been no benchmark previously established in the AFL for such an in depth analyisis of 'what has happened - or not happened' as the case may be.

As an Eagles supporter I do not expect a 'clean slate' but methinks 'how do we compare to the rest'. So, if Gillard comes back and says person Y showed themselves in delaing with X at Z to be indequate because ....................what benchmark is he using, how does this compare with other 15 clubs, is this reasonable, is this 'normal' etc

Tis interesting times we live in.

What will come of this Gillard investigation?

In "real" terms - 5/8 of **** all.

In AFL terms - a spin opportunity, a chance to say "look, we're proactive about drug use, you can trust us with your kiddies, working families blah blah" ...

I believe that NO ACTION should have have been taken over Ben Cousins until after this Gillard Investigation was completed.

Ben Cousins may well have reason to complain that because of the Culture at the West Coast Eagles, he was thae Victim of a Culture that lead to his problems.

Its being done for an obvious reason.

If the investigation finds anything then Vlad will slap the WCE on the wrist based on the evidence of the investigation.

If the investigation finds nothing then in a few years time when people ask questions about drugs in AFL, Vlad can say that he took action at the time by holding an investigation.

Basically Vlad is spending the AFL's money to cover his ass.

I don't think it will find much at all, other than what has been demonstrated on this forum in discussions relationing to Ben Cousins, Gary Ablett Sr, etc.

The level of tolerance and acceptance of drugs in society, especially amongst the younger people, is way too high to believe we can ever wage a strong enough battle to eradicate the problem.

All we can do is basically allow it to continue until a current player dies, because that is probably what will need to happen to get people to understand that all drugs can offer is long term pain for short term gain.

On the first bit you are spot on. On the second bit you would be half right

It is spin and ultimately nothing will happen to the Eagles.( apart from the veterans list/pick 54 punishment)

But what it will do is send a message to other clubs that there will be a standard of disclosure required. I dont profess to know what the Eagles told the AFL or what the AFL asked of the Eagles , but I can guarantee new disclosure procedures will be put in place

Sadly I agree with you, but with a 14 YO son it scares the crap out of me.
Luckily he isnt likely to be involved in professional sport. One less influence I need to try and control.

Sorry to break it to you, but drugs are everywhere mate, not just in sport. You kid will be asked to take drugs, and its up to him, not his employer, to make the decision.

When Justice Gillard has finished his investigation into the Eagles, perhaps then he can investigate the AFL.
They are a bigger joke than the Eagles, Pratt, Visy, Cousins put together.

Oh, please! Impartial? Gimme a break.

As for the enquiry, I have no idea what they hope to achieve. I said at the time it seemed like a typical knee jerk reaction to controversy and I couldn’t see what could be achieved. I still thing that.
