So who is the most underrated player in the AFL?

The Melbourne media's fascination with making these players god-like or immortal is astounding, whilst at the same time disregarding non-Victorian team's 'champion' players as just OK or nowhere near as good as their Melbourne counterparts.

I recall Garry Lyon saying to a Swans supporter on radio talk back once after another impressive Swans win in Melbourne around 2011-12, after being asked where he rates Adam Goodes as a champion of the game, saying something like how he doesn't think Adam Goodes is as good as some of the above players mentioned here quite simply because he plays for the Swans and Garry hasn't seen a lot of swans games over the years, so Goodes, in his opinion, will never be as good as them.

I think fans of interstate teams are for the most part pretty wrong when they say Victorians don't recognise champions from non Victorian teams. The Victorian media completely loses it over Dangerfield. Guys like Pavlich, Jonathan Brown and Dean Cox are thought of extremely highly and despite what you wrote Adam Goodes is viewed extremely highly in Victoria. In the past the midfields of Brisbane and West Coast were thought of as completely unstoppable. Not just by media, but by fans also. I think the chip on the shoulder is unjustified

And I would argue that the claim could just as easily be made that interstate teams underestimate the great players from lower profile Victorian clubs

How's eddie betts and plods going for you?

Betts is going very well and Pods is being serviceable. Infact don't know where we would be without them with the injuries we have going around at the moment. Probably would be 1win 5 losses without them now that I think about it...Worth the money.

Puoppolo, does amazing one percenters chases and tackles and kicks a goal here and there , never never stops trying, is small, powerful, fast on the after burners , puts in quick speed and catches opponents, has good kicking skills, follows instructions , is dynamite in the Hawthorn ethic of how they play to win, that's all he plays for, and his team mates and fans. He is aggressive and unafraid. He is unassuming and a quality person, and I bet Clarko loves him , as for underrated? Well he gets a mention in despatches that's about all, but he is a game saver and winner , knows his job and does it continually. Should get footy's equivalent of the VC.

No offence meant to the ANZACS by the way, God bless them all.

Puopolo is great at the one percenters and tough and he deserves his success. But he is limited and is by no means a great player

He finally played a good game for melbourne?

He has now played a total of one good game for melbourne

Not a bad return for a 600k+ player
Pleats take your JV related angst elsewhere

He's obviously a great player, but gets no heat whatsoever. Would love to see him be the clear #1 mid in a team and see how he goes.

Callan Ward owns this thread. Absolute Gun and rarely mentioned.
Watch the second half of 2012. Was tagged most weeks for 10 weeks or so, and he completely demolished all comers.

Dayne Beams. He's rated by some, but he's an absolute superstar of this league.

Has become a truly complete midfielder. So much "hurt factor", and that eternal poker face that he sports just makes him look all the more of a killer.

Are AAs really underrated?

He really should be considered a top 5 player now, but I don't think many people rate him in that company, even though there's nothing that he can't/doesn't do as a midfielder.

Jordan Lewis is an underrated footballer, judging by all the opposition fans I hear shouting, "You're a hack, Lewis!" He isn't one of those super-duper elite A-grade superstars, but he's been getting the job done for the past decade. Not sure why rival fans hate on him. He's not a dirty player, just hard and tough and more skilful than people give him credit for.

Behind Trav Cloke, he's the 2nd footballer from the 2004 draft to reach 200 games

Nice article in The Age on Friday:

Not disagreeing but who would you have in your top 5, out of interest?
