I went to a catholic high school in Newcastle called St pius X. It was situated in Adamstown. Sorta.
The principal of the school was a brother. By Brother I mean clergy. There were about 5 brothers at the school.
The principal was the head of a pedophile ring that stretched from northern NSW to Sydney.
My brother was abused by one of the Brothers. My brother and another 36 guys went to trial and there was a payout to 38 guys of 10 Million Dollars. The highest payout in history. But it was only about 150,000 per person. Nothing against what had destroyed their lives.
I was taught by 5 pedophiles in my 6 years at the school.
Some are dead. Some are still in jail.
I know of at least 9 guys who have committed suicide.
My Mums best friend had a son commit suicide at 35 years, He had two daughters under the age of ten.
One of my brothers was sexually abused. He caused a lot of problems in our family. It was only years later we found out why.
The Royal commission into institutional sexual abuse against minors reported to my Mums best friend. They were in close contact. It was my Mums best friend 's son's suicide that precipitated the Royal Commission. My Dad told me stuff before it was released to the media.

I ****ing hate religion.
What you went through Rusty was absolutely disgraceful and it just goes to show what a farce the Catholic church is. Funnily enough (sorry, it's not funny) but I was brought up as a Catholic as my mother was a staunch Catholic. As a result, I was an altar boy for a few years, went to a Catholic primary school run by the nuns and then a Catholic Secondary College run by the Brothers, as you did.
I was obviously one of the lucky ones as during my entire schooling and my time as an altar boy, I never came across anything that made me even suspect anyone of pedophilia.
There was however one occasion when I was around 10-11 that I was sexually abused by a friend of the family. The father of one of my brother's best mates. It wasn't a serious assault and it only happened once and I just brushed it off. Fortunately it left no scars at all.
I am so sorry for what you and your family had to endure.

This.

It's incredibly telling that a concept with the word "welcome" in it has somehow been spun into something "divisive."

But I suppose people need their two minutes before games start to be in peace and quiet so they can concentrate on putting sauce on their sausage rolls or whatever else they deem more important than showing the teeniest bit of respect to a particular community that ask the bare minimum of them.

Yes everything is labelled "divisive" now. The Voice vote was divisive, Welcome to Country is divisive and the indigenous flag at press conferences is divisive.

“Divisive” is rarely examined, and has simply become a cudgel word.

How exactly does displaying the flag of the people that occupied this land for tens of thousands of years “divide” us, Peter Dutton?

What exact insult to the heart does it strike us with?

These are the questions the press should ask Dutton et al when they bandy this word around like it’s an agreed thing.

I wonder where you'll be when China attack !
China aren't likely to attack us... they don't have the resources to do so... and we are just not that important to them. They are in the middle of a full economic and demographic collapse! Russia is about to do the same... by 2040 and probably well before, neither of them is likely to be a player...

The question is about whether either of them go out with a bang... ie a nuclear action. That is what is keep Europe up at night...

Don't hate Americans at all. Against their government's foreign policy. It is true they helped us in WW2. Now they are a dangerous ally.
Who would you rather we allied with?

While I too don't much like their foreign policy, they are pretty much world leaders at the moment and no-one else is stepping up to take the lead. While many nations have been touted as the next superpower, none have the same history of stability, population size, wealth of natural resources, overall education, technical skills, etc.

We have just lived through the longest period of global peace and prosperity in history, and big changes are coming that will include economic, social and technical upheaval. Being the USA's primary ally (not on the American continent) will ensure Australia has a fairly smooth run through this period, continuing to have access to items much of the world will not.

While I don't like a lot of their internal and external politics, I also have no idea who else we would ally with, that could provide the same or similar outcomes...

It's also worth voicing that I don't like a lot of our internal and external politics...

Imagine China with our size and resources

Totally agree , well put

Watch Dutton do a Trump in next year's election campaign. Howard and Abbott will be his chief advisers. News Limited will lead the charge. Toxic all round.
Yep, so painfully unoriginal. Dutton is a man of very limited imagination yet already a lot of commentary is like he's some sort of political wonderboy.

USA has been continually involved in wars since the 1950s. There are a number of warmongers there who want to start something with China. The only reason for them to attack us are the proposed US bases in Northern Australia through the AUKUS submarine deal. This would be in retaliation to US aggression.

It seems already too late, but we didn't have to make ourselves a potential target by joining forces with them when we have no beef with China.

You are fantasizing if you think China and Russia are just going to fade away. Also, the only country ever to launch a nuclear strike has been the USA. And with Trump and some of the right wing lunatics he has appointed coming to power, that will keep all rational people around the globe up at night.

I don't need to be welcomed to MY country at every bloody event held in this country. The AFL's decision to host a Welcome to Country prior to every AFL game is a farce. I'm hoping a few fans get jack of it and start yelling out "This IS my country".

Seems like a non issue to get offended over.

Nothing wrong with a bit of history, not sure why people are scared of it.

Non indigenous have been here around 240 years. Indigenous have been here for many thousands of years(along with the bandicoots) before they were dispossessed. And you're angry about an actual welcome ceremony that lasts a couple of minutes?

I feel like you think I was having a go at you, I wasn't... I just have a different point of view and I like hearing other points of view on the same subject... it gives me food for thought.

Trump gives me and every sane person nightmares, but he's not alone in that.

Most of Europe (but notably South Korea, Italy, Greece, Germany, China & Russia) is facing a serious demographic crisis in the next 10-20 years, so the seats of power are likely to change over the next few decades, with other countries in that geographical area rising to take the lead politically. Add the war in Ukraine (the bread basket of Europe) to the growing fertilizer shortage worldwide, then add in the effects of climate change; and you can expect to start reading about famines within the next few years. Lack of resources cause social unrest, social unrest causes political instability, political instability causes war... (although of course, humans will find just about any reason to go to war). Then there's the energy crisis, and the extreme weather events...

While the West is not far behind them (or in some cases ahead of them) in the demographic crisis, any country allied with the USA will not have to face the food or energy crises, which gives them a buffer... In my view, any problem we are facing with Russia and China, while it maybe severe in nature, is unlikely to be long term given the other problems the world is facing.

Obviously I am not a geopolitical commentator, and most of my information is picked up from the net and books, so I am no expert... but I do find it interesting and like to hear other points of view that I can research and compare.

I'm hoping a few fans get jack of it and start yelling out "This IS my country".
And I'm certain a few other fans would tell those fans they're being dickheds.

Sheesh like I said a while back, it's hard to imagine a more generous, kind-hearted gesture than the welcome to country, after what indigenous Australians have been subjected to since 1788.

Hard to see how anyone could interpret that as anything but a lovely action.

It is and i support it , but it can be overkill , the same as the pride games , too much of it , have it on one weekend

Good thing then that they aren't welcoming you to your country.
