South Africa 2010 - who will still be around?

Remove this Banner Ad

I was going through this with some mates yesterday morning in the wash up.

Who definately will not be around:

Scott Chipperfield
Craig Moore
Mark Viduka
Ante Covic
Tony Popovic
Stan Lazaridis
Josip Skoko
John Aloisi

Who might be, but probably won't:

Mark Schwarzer
Zeljko Kalac
Harry Kewell

Who is young enough, but might fall out of favour by 2010:

Mile Sterjovski
Archie Thompson
Mark Milligan
Luke Wilkshire

Who should be there in 2010 if form/injury permits:

Lucas Neill
Marco Bresciano
Tim Cahill
Jason Culina
Vince Grella
Michael Beauchamp
Josh Kennedy
Brett Emerton

Players not in squad who could be in 2010:

Ljubo Milicevic
Kristian Sarkies
Nick Ward
Neil Kilkenny
Nathan Coe
Brett Holman
Brad Jones
James Wesolowski

The best thing is that we're going to keep our midfield together, except for Kewell perhaps. By 2010 our midfield will be more experienced and will have the benefit of having six years in the national set up together.

The problems are in goal, in defence and up front. To be frank, the next generation isn't too flash, and Germany was our best chance for awhile you'd imagine. Who knows who will spring up, though?

Kewell will still be around in 4 years time I can GUARANTEE that. It's a dead set certainty. His groin is/will be fine.

There is always a remote possibility that someone like Dukes could still be around to play an off the bench role ala Neil Quinn for Ireland in 2002.

Chippers has already said that he would want to keep up his involvement with the team although I suggest he'd be planning a similar role as Laza in this world cup (bench warmer).

Pretty sad to think about how many of the current squad will be gone come 2010 but if Lucas Neil continues to grow and goes to a bigger club we will have a dead-set champion captain and a good basis for a team.

yeah I wouldn't be surprised if Chipperfield sticks around till 2010. Obviously Neill is now the heir apparent to the captain's arm band and with bloody good reason, but I also think Tim Cahill would have done an admirable job as captain... he just bleeds green and gold...
Scott McDonald will definitely be in the squad by 2010 so he could possibly help boost our stock of strikers.

I doubt Milligan would fall out of favour? He's probably a guy that would be looking at locking down the centre half spot for a few years, would he not?

To be quite honest I'm not overly concerned with our turnover of players. We're Australia, we're good at sport. It will all work itself out :)

If he makes it, it will be at rightback (180cm).

He turns 21 in August and has 10 A-League games to show for his senior level career to date - not sure why he was chosen for the squad in the first place.

Unproven at club level let alone on the world's biggest stage - and with our depth it's not as if we had room for a Theo Walcott.

We just had to have a token Sydney FC inclusion, didn't we?

Shyte, Imagine the Fire in the Belly that Neill would have !

ah dude isnt grella, bresciano and chipperfield only 26-28 years old.... meaning i think theyd still be holding down first spot teams in four years.

maybe chippers is older but i am pretty sure grella and bresciano will still be keys in 4 years.
Grella and Bresciano will be 30 in 2010, Chippers will be 34.
We still have an ok nucleas to work with... we will lose Kewell (wear and tear), Viduka, Kalac, Moore, Lazaridis, Skoko.
Personally I think Schwarzer will still be around. The USA GK was 38 and its already been highlighted about the age of some others at the cup.The other two less likely, but Covic isn't that impressive anyway and we saw what the big stage did to Kalac.Kewell will only be 31, but his body will be about 71.Also, with soft tissue injuries, once you get them, you rarely if ever fully shake them off.The Aussie medical staff is first rate, and they did a marvellous job just to get him there.Moore will still be around, but I think by then that Beauchamp, Spiranovic & Milligan will probably have surpassed him as a starter.
But we will have an improving and at peak Kennedy, Cullina, Neill, Grella, Bresciano as five definite starters id say... wilkshire will hang around.. lets hope Milligan develops into a great defender he is only 20 and Sarkies gets some good time with Victory to get even better.
And to that list you can add Kilkenny, Patafta, Williams, Watson, Coe, Jones, Griffiths, Hardy, Musialik, Leijer, Dilevski, Heffernan, Thwaite, Milicevic, Wesolowski and Ward. One would think with the natural technical abilities that those players have and with the natural progression in their game with maturity to go with it, something would have to go drastically wrong for them not be be in and around the 2010 squad.

Re: Socceroos Retirees

Does matter who will be there in 2010?

I think the most pressing matter that faces soccer/football is the continued growth of the A-League and a successful furore into the Asian Champions League/Asian Championships.
From now till 2010, we'll see domestic palyers able to hone/show their skills against the best in Asia and more games in terms of World qualifications...hey there might be players at the age of 16-17 that could be better than your kewells, cahills atm that might just stick with soccer instead of footy/bball/rugby etc as ACL might become lucrative?

Also, l'd like to see whom from these squads will progress...
Olyroos:
Danny Vukovic (Central Coast Mariners) (pictured), Jacob Timpano (Sydney FC), Mark Milligan (Sutherland Sharks, Sydney FC), Adrian Leijer (Melbourne Victory), David Micevski (Perth Glory), Nick Ward (Perth Glory), Stuart Musialik (Newcastle Jets), Spase Dilevski (Queensland Roar), Kristian Sarkies (Melbourne Victory), Ruben Zadkovich (Bulli, Sydney FC), Mark Bridge (Newcastle Jets) Justin Pasfield (Sydney United, Sydney FC), Nikolai Topor-Stanley (Manly United, NSW), Vince Lia (Melbourne Victory), Tyler Simpson (Blacktown City Demons, Queensland Roar), Billy Celeski (Bulleen Zebras, Perth Glory), Adam Casey (Wollongong Wolves, NSW), Dez Giraldi (Central Coast Mariners).
