Must admit, I thought it was a rather curious move when I read it.The Gospel said:Was reading in todays Mercury, that Hobart are going to be playing games at snug in "the heart of the clubs recruitment zone"
This is already the beginning of the end of SWL
I personally don't mind us playing a game down at Queenborough but really don't want to watch us play at Snug.
I attended the two games Hobart & Sandy Bay played down there in 1994 and 1995 and despite good attendances (2,421 & 1,487) I found it to be one of the worst viewing grounds I've ever watched footy at.
I note that Clarence is being touted as playing games at Oatlands and Richmond as well, I wonder whether both Hobart and Clarence will be playing games in those regions against low drawing teams to stave off inevitable financial losses from poor home attendances.
To be fair, the Southern Cats were a club started from scratch with no history or credibility. The Gospel said:Remember the southern cats playing at Huonville.......... didnt work
They were loosely based at North Hobart but wanted to get in being a big part of the Huon, only trouble was, the Huon based fans already had their own clubs and didn't take kindly to the Cats trying to muscle in on their area.
The Majestic (that sometimes posts on here) can tell you more about the reception they got when they played Glenorchy down there in their first year.
Not anymore they don't. Sadly. The Gospel said:Hobart have NO SUPPORT in the south,
Hobart had a solid, but nevertheless traditionally fickle fanbase throughout the years (not as big as the "Big 4" obviously) but since the mid 90's that support has dropped away very, very badly.
It fell away even further when they dropped the Tigers emblem and jumper when they entered the SFL (but still had a solid core of support) but as is commonly known the major damage was when they elected to go the Lions-route at the end of 2004.
They still can't get people once involved with them to acknowledge the club since they did that and despite the club returning to the Tigers this season, anecdotally the number of supporters around the club whilst better, still isn't up to what it was even 9-10 years ago.
Membership is about even at this point with what it was for the entire year last year, but even that is quite small-fry compared to many other clubs.
Interesting to note, Glenorchy, despite being premiers last year had a membership figure compareable to Hobart's!
Also too, the Huon used to be an area which Hobart was very well supported in even as late as a decade ago, this year is going to be a year in which things will be very interesting to see just what our support level is, not only up here in town but down there.
I'm genuinely hoping the damage hasn't been irreparable - we will see...
If things do eventually improve, I believe it will take many, many years.
Given that I've not set foot in the place in 8 months I can't comment on this one.The Gospel said:What are Hobart doing to promote football to juniors in there zone.... NOTHING
What happens to the 300 kids playing underage for Kingborough, do they expect the to go to Hobart FC.......... wont happen.
I would hope they are doing something constructive though.
I'll see more when I finally get time to be around the club, hopefully Good Friday
It will always be a frosty one too. Bitter HATRED is more accurate LOLThe Gospel said:Hobart and Kingborough have a very frosty relationship, now the expect to pick up there players...
Especially while Messrs Herweynan & Evans are involved at Kingborough.
Their attitude won't be forgotten in a great hurry by anyone at Hobart let me tell ya!
Unbelievable!
If only both clubs had sat down and worked TOGETHER all those years ago..
Don't they have to get clearances now? How does the new system all work? The Gospel said:Thats why the young players that wanted to play in the SW went to Clarence with Blighty....
I plead ignorance because I really haven't had the time nor inclination to sit down and go through it all.
