There's no other reason he'd be there doing a time trial on the first day of preseason.
Our vfl squad also did time trials last night
It’s a possibility he couldn’t make the evening training session so elected to do the trial during the day with the afl listed players

Was going to say hold for the MSD, but someone mentioned we'll likely have a spot available through a long term injury anyway so maybe worth taking someone now.

No idea who, they're basically a free hit so you either take a freak/elite athlete and hope to turn them into AFL level footballers or you take a kid under 21 that is a solid footballer with improvement in them in an elite environment that might have missed the draft for a number of reasons.

I'm not a big fan of taking guys in their mid 20s that are state level players as I think their upside is extremely limited and they are purely stop gap/bandaid players which is not where our list is at. We don't need win now insurance we need to build a premiership list for 3-5 years away.

SIMPLE
Invite train on players for SSP and only select one if they show they’re up to it, else Mid season.

RICHMOND has invited East Perth forward Mitch Schofield and New Zealander Mykelti Lefau to train with the club during the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP).

The pair started training with Adem Yze's squad on Monday morning – beginning life at Punt Road with the 2km time trial – and are expected to be given until at least Christmas to earn a shot on the rookie list.

Schofield produced a breakout season in the WAFL this year, kicking 30 goals to become a permanent fixture for the Royals.

The 22-year-old focused on baseball during his childhood and was set to move to the United States to play in the NCAA before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the world in 2020.

The 194cm mobile forward played local football instead that season before being spotted by East Perth, where he has gradually earned more senior opportunities across the past 18 months, attracting interest from a few clubs across the back end of 2023.

Lefau moved from Auckland to Melbourne in 2012 and spent time in Melbourne Storm's development program before deciding to focus on football rather than rugby league.

The 23-year-old played some games for the Casey Demons before the pandemic, then returned to local football level where he played for St Kilda City in the Southern Football Club.

Lefau joined Richmond's VFL program ahead of the 2022 season and played six games before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament tear that ended his first season with the Tigers.

But after a long recovery, the 195cm, 96kg utility returned in June and played 11 VFL games to put his career back on track.

Richmond has rewarded a growing number of players out of the club's VFL program in recent times, with James Trezise, Tylar Young and Jake Aarts all graduating to the AFL list at the Swinburne Centre, while Massimo D'Ambrosio and Sam Durham have also landed AFL chances elsewhere after playing VFL football for the Tigers.

The SSP opened on Monday and will run until February 19 with Schofield and Lefau likely to return after the Christmas break if they impress between now and the end of training in December.

Surprised re Leafu. I'll be amazed if he makes it. Cant find much at all on Schofield.

Fairly underwhelming selections really. Surely there was a decent lid or two that got overlooked in the draft....

I am not shocked at all we have given one of our VFL guys a go, nor that it is Lefau. He was fantastic last season in the VFL considering he was straight off an ACL, and is a point of difference player, a 195cm tackling beast who can hurt people legally, the best kind of way to hurt anyone in footy. :)

The club is obviously trying to get irons in the key forward fire, hoping 1-2 of them can turn out decent to support Lynch initially then a likely big name recruit in this position arriving on Tiger shores over the next year or two. Are these guys likely to make the grade? No. Is 1-2 of Bauer, The Force, Koschitzke, Lefau, Schofield and our two project giant basketballers likely to be useful somewhere along the line? Maybe.

Confirmed Lefau is in the mix for the last spot along with a forward from out west

I don’t like that they’re asking Lefau to train on. That’s not because I don’t like Lefau as a player. I don’t mind him. However, what more does he need to show us?

He’s in his mid-20s and has been with our VFL team for 2 years now. He’s already played more than enough games for us to judge him with, so we should already know whether we want him or not. If we want him, then we should’ve selected him in the rookie draft and not waste his time. If not, then we shouldn’t have given him hope by bringing him on as a train-on player.

Some may argue that we’re doing this in case he gets injured in the preseason, but we shouldn’t select players we’re not willing to put the time into. If the injury is serious and before the SSP deadline, then we can put him on the inactive list and select someone else. If it’s after, then we would’ve already made a call on an SSP player anyway.

I don’t know about Schofield so we’ll have to see how he goes.

I tend to agree I guess the only difference with him with us during the pre season is seeing how he responds to being in a full time afl environment

Might show that he improves in leaps and bounds but that’s just me playing devils advocate

There’s a couple” of clips of Schofield , not dissimilar to Bauer , lean natural forward that gets to right spots . WAFL is nothing like afl , nil congestion , no zone defense, so not much sample crashing packs at all . He’s a nice kick and prob worth a shot in hope that one of him or Bauer make it

The case for I guess is that last year was first games back from ACL

I like Bauer down back, which is where he will start this year. Reads the ball so well, great mark and a nice kick.

That’s another good point

As I’ve mentioned I’m not convinced but I also think these are the perfect types of players to role the dice with

Low cost, low expectations but potentially high reward
