Riewoldt wins his 3rd Trevor Barker Award
3 October 2006
St Kilda Football Club

The St Kilda Football Club announced its 2006 Trevor Barker Award winner at the Vodafone Arena, Melbourne Park in Melbourne tonight before 1700 people.

23 year old Nick Riewoldt has taken out the Trevor Barker Award as the Club’s Best & Fairest player tonight (Tuesday, 3rd October). This is Riewoldt’s 3rd Trevor Barker Award and since his debut in 2001 he has won it every second year (2002, 2004 and 2006). Riewoldt with his 3rd Best & Fairest equals that of former three time winners Eicke, Davis, Ross, Baldock and Burke. Riewoldt is only one behind Club champions Bill Cubbins and Robert Harvey with their 4 Best & Fairests.

For the first part of the evening it was Lenny Hayes who was polling well, however with the injury he succumbed put him out of the running. Riewoldt polled consistently throughout the night and took the lead from Round 9. Gram also polled consistently throughout the season with S Fisher coming home very strong in the last few rounds.

The final voting saw Riewoldt with 145 votes, Gram second with 134 votes and Sam Fisher close in third place on 131 votes. Robert Harvey finished 4th on 121 votes with Nick Dal Santo and Brendon Goddard both finishing 5th on 115 votes. The top four place getters played all 23 matches throughout the season (including the Elimination Final).

The voting structure consisted of the 5 coaches agreeing on a score out of 10 of the selected 22 players from each Round.

luke ball not in the top 10. what a disgrace!!

Ball was carrying OP through the whole year, he couldn't even run.

Riewoldt broke his collar bone twice last year, i'm sure that something had to do with it.

didn't stop him from playing. there are plenty of players who suffer from this but still get the job done. not to finish in the top 10 in the b&f from a player of his supposed calibre is disgraceful.

How is it cringe-worthy?

Numbers are often handed along when players retire. #1 was Trevor Barker's number. Should only ever have been worn by high-marking blondes after him.

To stupid to notice Luke Ball was struggling with OP all season? could barely walk after every match, by rd 18 he could barely kick the ball 40 metres. Why was he playing you ask? because he has heart unlike your mob down there at Carlton.
