Roast St Kilda robbed of home final

This will probably get a lot of hate for this but anyway...

I have recently changed my thoughts on Home finals.
Why should the first three weeks of finals be influenced by ladder positions when the Grand Final isn't?

My thoughts are the AFL should lock in venues for finals at the start of each season and then the teams that finish in those positions just play there.
Using the top ground in each state. MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval, Gabba and Optus Stadium.
If your good enough you should win anywhere.

While we are at it, scrap the double chance as well.
1 vs 8
2 vs 7
3 vs 6
4 vs 5

Straight up knockout.

Would never happen though because of $$
Disagree about the first part but the NBL style (at least when I followed) 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7 etc knockout finals would be interesting.

I enjoyed the hawks home game v the saints at marvel.

more than happy to play you at the MCG, same as when Pies hosted us Rnd1 Friday night 2022 at Marvel, would love to play at the MCG. you're having a winge over an H/A game.

we play 15 odd games a year at our home venue and are being forced to play a home final at a ground we play on at most twice a year, and Hawks would be squawking 10x louder than us if you were forced to play a home final and Marvel.

the level of hypocrisy in this thread is something else. Our choice was to play the Docklands

I agree with OP here. If we want a fair competition this has to be at marvel. They're completely different grounds: from the dimensions, to the playing surface, atmosphere, and weather conditions. If we want this whole "well they need the practice for if they make the GF" argument to have any merit then they need to play more games there during the regular season. I mean the GF shouldn't be locked in at four or five of the competition's teams' home ground indefinitely anyway, but that's a different issue.

Do we want to have a somewhat fair competition or one adjusted to maximise revenue?

Round 1 2022 was a St Kilda Home game.

Just saw the finals fixture and St Kilda are playing GWS at the MCG. Wtf?
Game should be at Docklands as it's St Kilda's home ground.
It's not like any fans are going to get locked out at Docklands.

St Kilda hosting a home final at the MCG is akin to if Brisbane were made to host a home final at Carrara, if GWS were made to host a home final at the SCG or if Sydney were made to host a home final at Giants Stadium.

Do you think the Saints should be playing at Docklands?
Or do you think the AFL have made the right call?
Nope.

St Kilda have a "home" final... at the "home" of football.

The MCG is the AFL's first choice of venue for all finals played in Victoria.

I see through you. All you Geelong fans have constantly pushed this argument about "home" finals because you want your cheat ground home advantage, not just for the home & away games, but also for the finals in September. But it's not gonna happen, mate. You might eventually get one in Week 1 if you're playing Freo, Giants or Suns... and there happens to be a log-jam of MCG finals with another 3 Victorian teams as the higher seed. But that will be the rare exception to the rule.

Finals are played at the MCG. :thumbsu:

St Kilda hosting GWS at the MCG in a final makes as much sense as GWS hosting St Kilda at the SCG in a final.
Brisbane should be hosting Port at Carrara in a final shouldn't they? Home state final and all.

Really don't mind we are at the G and I hope the crowd reflects the bigger venue.

Wasn't overly happy however at Laura Kane's statement which didn't acknowledge the club or fanbase whatsoever. All "We, we, we" which probably tells us that it will be 'business' as usual at the top.

“The MCG is the home of finals and we had the opportunity to play three days in a row and we took it,” Kane explained on SEN’s Sportsday.

“We would contemplate Marvel if we had four Victorian games, but we didn’t. We’ve got three games, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, at the MCG which we’re really looking forward to.”

Isn't the wording a home state final or something like that? It doesn't impact WA and SA teams because there is only one ground.
Yep.

It is just a myth pushed by WA and SA wowsers that teams "earn" a home final.

Finals venues are at the discretion of the league. The league often will enter into contracts re where games are played.

Back in early 2000s, if there were multiple finals to be staged in Melbourne in week1 of finals they would send the smallest crowd to Docklands.

The preference now is that finals are at the G, unless ALL 4 week1 finals are to be played in Vic.

In 2011 and 2013 their were 4 finals to schedule in Vic, and back then Thursday wasn't a thing, so they put the anticipated smallest crowd at alternate venues as couldnt have 4 games at the G.

There is no "robbing", StKilds get their home state final at the ground the AFL deems will maximise attendance.

Yeah this. What a friggin insane way to explain why Saints don't get a home final. And she wasn't even called out for it. Talk about an arse about approach to a supposed sporting competition.

This is the kind of anti-Victorian bias that plagues the league. When will it stop!?
Lol victoria is a state with two tiers.

Theres the mcg clubs - clubs who get regular games on the g and it isn’t a strange place.

Then theres the clubs that get one game a year and only more when there’s finals.

the AFL is 2 tiered. 14 clubs get home finals when they are earnt and 4 don't. This will change for Geel so it will become just 3 clubs that miss out.

Why are you trying to make this about Geelong?
Because that is exactly what all you Handbaggers have been trying to do over the past 6,7,8 years with these ludicrous "home final" discussions
Especially with the GMHBA Stadium renovation nearing completion.

The next time Geelong finishes 1st, 2nd, 5th or 6th, you want the Week 1 final to be played at GMHBA Stadium instead of the MCG.
You're not fooling anyone. The Cats agenda is perfectly clear.

But like I said already, it won't happen unless there are 4 finals that weekend in Victoria with Geelong facing an interstate minnow.

What will happen to all the Cats supporters who miss out on seeing their team play in a home final when it's played in Geelong? With opposition allocation of at least 10k, corporates, finals series ticket holders, AFL member and MCC allocations within a maximum capacity of only about 40k, surely only 20k locals get to see it?

The day they get a Geelong final against another high-drawing club, their next whining episode will be how many of their paying members miss out because other punters get to attend. Bank on it.

Finals don't work like regular home and away fixtures.

Look at the mcg tenants terrified of losing their leg up.

Don’t worry princesses, you’ve still got the granny
