Don't want to bring the general mood down after the news from today, but if all go to plan during the trade period, then our starting 22 for next season will be very interesting and we would need to address this scenario at some point. Tough decisions will need to be made on some favourites, but will need to be made for the balance of the team.

Just looking at the team vs Brisbane, and some of the changes to fit in potential new recruits, we would need to make some tough calls on some champions of the club. We played 4 KPD against Brisbane (which I already thought was 1 too many, bit McInerney going down compounded that even more), and assuming Grimes comes back in, we would need to drop 2 of them.

Choice would then naturally need to be made for the on-ball brigade, which might mean heartache for some of the younger players.

Personally, I see this as the 22 to start Round 1 next season, assuming all fit:

FB: Grimes, Tarrant/Broad, Balta
HB: Short, Vlaustin, Rioli
C: Pickett, Cotchin, McIntosh
HF: Bolton Riewoldt, Rioli
FF: Cumberland, Lynch, Martin

F: Nankervis Prestia <new mid>

Int: Baker Miller <new mid> Ross/Sonsie/Graham

Thoughts, and how do you think we approach our starting 22 next season?

FB: Grimes, Balta, Tarrant
HB: Rioli, Vlastuin, Short
C: McIntosh, Tarranto, Pickett
HF: Dusty, Bolton, Baker
FF: Riewoldt, Cumberland, Lynch
F: Miller, Prestia, Hopper
Int: Broad, Sonsie, Ross, MRJ

Can’t see Cotchin getting a major gig in the 22 next year :(
Also sorry nank, just feel like his performances this year have not warranted a guaranteed spot. Miller seems to be a better tap ruck

B - Vlastuin, Tarrant, Grimes
HB - Baker, Balta, Rioli
C - Short, Hopper, Pickett
HF - Martin, Riewoldt, Bolton
F - Rioli, Lynch, Cumberland
Foll - Nankervis, Taranto, Prestia
Inter - Cotchin, Graham, Ryan, Sonsie

That's probably the most talented side we've put out since KB's days.

McIntosh and Broad incredibly stiff, but you have to keep transitioning the side. Obviously Gibcus will keep playing. Not quite sure how. I'm kinda anticipating Grimes will miss a fair bit of footy next year. Or maybe they'll try him forward.

Would love to see Stack crack the round one side.

Has Short played much on the wing? I never considered it and it seems like it would suit him if we can’t fit him in the backline.

Its one thing to have talented players another thing for them to be picked. MC will need to have a good hard look at themselves. Can see them playing Cotch through to 300 games regardless of form.

We need an upgrade on Nank. Gives away too many frees and doesn't provide enough advantage at centre bounce.

B - Vlastuin, Tarrant, Grimes
HB - Short, Balta, Rioli
C - KMac, Hopper, Pickett
HF - Martin, Riewoldt, Bolton
F - Baker, Lynch, Cumberland
Foll - Nankervis, Taranto, Prestia
Inter - Cotchin, Rioli, Miller, Broad
Sub - Graham/Sonsie/Ross

Pretty strong line up that, 7 man Def, Fwd and Mid with an A grade 2nd mid rotation of Martin, Cotchin and Bolton with Short to pinch hit.

I can see Cotchin, Riewoldt, Tarrant, Prestia and Martin being rested throughout the year giving Graham/Sonsie/Ross/Gibcus plenty of exposure with added games from the inevitable injuries.

Best 22 (for a final lets say)

B: Broad, Tarrant, Balta
BF: Grimes, Vlastuin, Rioli
C: Pickett, Taranto, McIntosh
HF: Bolton, MRJ, Martin
FF: Lynch, Riewoldt, Cumberland
R: Nankervis, Hopper, Prestia
IC: Baker, Short, Cotchin, Miller
Sub: Ross

Next: Graham, Sonsie, Gibcus

Ross and Graham is a toss up to be honest.

PS: I also named the team like Dimma would with smalls then talls in the forward line

FB: Grimes, Balta, Tarrant
HB: Baker, Vlastuin, Short
C: Rioli, Taranto, Pickett
HF: Bolton, Martin, Rioli Jr.
FF: Riewoldt, Cumberland, Lynch
Foll: Nankervis, Prestia, Hopper
Int: Broad, Cotchin, Miller, Sonsie

Emg: Ross, KMac, Gibcus, Graham

I love KMac, but I think he’s going to have the most heat on him to keep his spot in the 22. If he comes back with the kind of form he had this season then you’d probably put Dan Rioli at HB and Baker on a forward flank with MRJ starting on the bench in place of Sonsie. The other question is, could we put MRJ on a wing?

Sonsie’s spot is probably also dependent on who’s more versatile out of him and Ross. Gibcus and Graham a bit stiff to miss out but great cover for injuries. If we retain Stacky and manage to hold onto Ralphsmith then we’ve got two more AFL ready blokes who can slide in. Both with huge upside.

This isn’t even going into how Ryan, Banks, Clarke, Bauer are going to come on as players with another pre-season under their belts.

**** me, what great depth we have. 2023 shaping as potentially our best list yet if we can get Hopper and Taranto done. This years (and potentially next years) draft can GAGF. All in on another run of flags.

It really is a hard exercise.

My take:

FB: Grimes Balta Tarrant

HB: Rioli Vlastuin Broad

C: McIntosh Prestia Pickett

HF: Graham Martin Rioli

FF: Riewoldt Lynch Bolton

F: Nankervis Taranto Hopper

INT: Cotchin Short Miller Baker

EMG: Cumberland, Sonsie, Ross, Gibcus

Rarely; if ever will your best 22 is all fit and good to play at any one time.

I’m sure others will not like Cumberland being the guy who misses out. But if we are able to facilitate Hopper and Taranto, Martin and Bolton spend more time forward meaning someone like Cumberland probably gets squeezed out.

When it’s a difficult exercise it’s scary how good we could be in ‘23.

Stack for Short...
Broad for Balta...

I've pretty much got the same team, but Cumberland in for Graham. Sonsie, Ross, Graham and Gibcus will all get good game time.

Miller as sole ruckman is the surest way to have 100 points kicked on us by halftime

Nank could have been better this year but without him we’re done

Other than that I like your 22

May i ask why no Gibcus? Will only be better next year. Our best 1 on 1 defender. Once he puts on size, he'll be a 1 on 1/intercepting machine.
Also i see the reasoning graham plays over cumberland up forward but cumbo kicked way too many goals in his games to be excluded.

exactly. if he ain't in our side by round 3, the other 17 teams will be ringing sonsies manager with tasty offers.

The kids living his boyhood dream of playing for the Tigres! Will bide whatever time required make whatever improvement required and end up retiring a 1 club player. Why hook up with the local scrubber when you're ploughing the prom queen?

Better to have to earn a game too
