I keep seeing people placing Short ahead of McIntosh on the wing. I find this difficult to understand. I appreciate that Short is a better kick but McIntosh role is more about dropping back into defense as marking option, giving a marking option during kick outs, acting as a link player in running chains and as surprize option for goal from the arc. Short is excellent by foot but to do McIntosh's role, he needs to develop a much bigger engine and become far more disciplined defensively.
Not he's not, I'm not sure if you watch our games closely at all???
He's a defensive running wingman, 100% he is, and there's not too many better than him there, but he's not a marking target at all. He rarely goes up as the third man up in a defensive marking contest. Grimes, Vlas are generally set up as a spare to take that role.
And as for kick outs, I'm not sure you are looking there either. We have a couple of "go to's" for our kick outs. Short pass into the pocket and then long down the line or play on from the square and long down the line. And we always go to a KPF or Ruck, not a tall winger.
Just because he is tall, doesn't automatically mean he's a better marking option.
Most of Kmac's marks will be when we switch the ball across the back half and he has run hard to make space by himself out on the wing. It's great workrate, but nothing to do with his height, nor is it something that can't be replicated by a smaller player.
