State of umpiring

Mastermind sums it up better than me, but my point is basically that the explanation is so damned bizarre and inflammatory that either the actual truth of the matter is even worse, or everyone involved has put their pants on their heads and are just acting deranged for some reason.

I feel you man. At the moment I'm leaning towards an astonishing level of incompetence where the person in charge of the AFL rules doesn't know the basic rules of Australian Football.

The other explanations don't bear thinking about.

Laura shamed herself, the game, the fans and the umpires today with that verbal diarrhoea. It was classic AFL.

Felt like when I was watching it that the self perceived ‘smartest in the room’ was giving the not so smartest explanation

I will bet body parts next week a North player will be on the mark, Melbourne player will fake play on, North player takes a step and it will be called 50m as umpire has not called play on. And that will be correct..........
They fixed this last year. Unfortunately the memo didn’t get to the umpire earlier in the year when George Wardlaw was pinged.

A 50m penalty will no longer be paid if a player fakes a handball while behind the mark, drawing their opponent off their position.

It's one of three tweaks to rule interpretations that have been made ahead of the 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, with the League aiming to simplify the game for officiating, minimising delays and reducing player exploitation of rules.

I honestly can’t believe how dumb Kane and her little group are. Been sitting here all night not being able to believe she actually went on video and said that.

Simplest answer: “we would prefer that 50 metre penalty be given. The umpire could have be quicker with his stand the mark call, but all players understand approaching after a mark, even if they think it is play on, without hearing this from the umpire, it is a 50 metre penalty. We understand this type of action has happened in the past where the umpire hasn’t paid a 50 metre penalty, like the case in Sundays game, but we direct our umpires to give 50 with this action”.

Done. Painful that nothing can change. But it’s done. Everyone moves on.

Instead, this moron comes out and completely makes a mess of the situation.
I think a famous quote from Denis Pagan is apt with what she blurted out today:
"Don't p155 down my back & try to tell me it's raining"

When an AFL sycophant like Whateley is calling you out on 360 you know you’ve ****ed up.
the mental gymnastics to attempt an understanding on how that is not a 50 had me in laughing hysteria. She ****ed up, was she told that by the umpire flog and she has delivered the message? Or does she genuinely believe that with no concept of the rules or the game? Either way, she doesn’t know the rules does she?

That's monumental. The Hun, calling out the state of umpiring after a game where North were the team that copped the shafting... And where Collingwood benefitted.

Hell... I'm even considering purchasing today's paper.

I'm sure the Age is also on to this.

Does anyone have Nick McKenzie's phone number?

That's insane. But this is why admitting mistakes helps everyone move on. Gaslighting leads to conspiracy theories. Truth and contrition is always a better policy.
Except its less insane than the actual response which is completely mental and at odds with reality.

Honestly I can accept shit decisions. It’s frustrating but that’s sport. But the explanation that Kane gave is so utterly incorrect and ridiculous that it’s now turned into a far bigger deal. She should come out today and say you know what I was wrong yesterday. We have looked back and yes that was an incorrect decision and should have been paid. We are sorry we caused more confusion around the issue yesterday. It’s still shit but at least it’s acknowledging they ****ed up.

So with the words of LK, I wonder what will happen moving forward if a team does what Collingwood did (and were allowed to do).

Are they also allowed to self-officiate and is the rule book also a guide only?

Or do the umpires come down harder on those infringements?

Either way, she's painted herself in a lose-lose position and surely becomes untenable.

Untenable? Mate, she'll be there for years and probably become CEO.

I honestly think it's the general public / fan who are the dumb ones.

At the end of the day, every one of us will rock up week after week, then the AFL will do what they do to help their favourites, we will have a couple of days of outrage, and then carry on spending money on this rorted system and the sponsors (aka betting agencies) that line the AFL coffers as soon as the following weekend.
