Logic says both should keep the Magpie nickname and the away side wears an alternate guernsey when both play against each other.
Common sense might suggest that one revert to a alternate nickname...

I'd say Logic would overrule common sense, but who would ****ing know...

It's the only fair way. You only have to listen to Kingpin re Hobart to know how a change angers supporters when it comes to a jumper...the thought of my South Launceston Bulldogs running out in an East Launceston Demons heritage jumper recently gave me a big beaming smile all day up here (2000km away) when I found out! And friends of mine 20 years ago told me they hated the fact that their Devonport Magpies were running around (and won a flag in) Carlton colours!

There's also no seniority here between any of the clubs, Magpies or Bombers alike, unlike the original SW which was just an expanded TANFL. The draw is designed to play on the intra-regional rivalry, so at least there aren't any local clashes. So all 4 sides should just keep what they've got...Burnie and South are both the result of mergers, so their new identities have stayed, but every other side that's had to change name and colours has reverted when they got the chance...except Hobart...

If it was decided that two clubs couldn't have the sa e colours and mascots, one could keep each.

eg. North Launceston in black and red, while Lauderdale keep the Bombers. But really, there should be no problem. Away team where's the clash jumper (or lower qualifying team in finals).

My point was that it's an unpopular choice with fans when a team changes its identity...the only time it seems to work is when the team is a product of a merger, but otherwise it gets shouted down.

I'd imagine the whole sharing thing would somehow manage to mutate into whingy bitchy negative rivalry (e.g. Collingwood and Port), and seeing as the clashing teams are not regional rivals, it's not as though they are threatening each other's markets...a fair chunk of the spectators wouldn't even care about the opposition and whatever they stood for if they weren't from the same city...I know I cancelled all my big corporate million dollar engagements for South v North Launceston, but couldn't work up the same passion for New Norfolk...I'd imagine I would have said "didn't we play that other black and red team last week?" if that team was Lauderdale...

Devonport Council set to vote on lighting report
13/09/2008
A $680,000 plan to upgrade the lighting of the Devonport Oval will be tabled at the Devonport City Council meeting next week.
AFL Tasmania has offered to help fund the project to enable night games at the oval as part of the proposed statewide league.
The new lighting would also make the Devonport Oval the only venue in Tasmania able to host night cricket games.
http://nwtasmania.yourguide.com.au/...l-set-to-vote-on-lighting-report/1271596.aspx

Where is all the funding coming from for all these promises?
Lights at Devonport(Bellerive logically as well), buses, no levies, game day costs, 50k junior development, 700k facilities fund etc. etc. etc. Plus the running costs for AFL Tas HQ, wages and fleet? Will the AFL fund this eternally?
Sounds like something out of Life of Brian...
Naughtius Maximus his name was. Mmm. Promised me the known world he did. I was to be taken to Rome, housed by the forum. Slaves, asses milk, as much gold as I could eat. Then he, having his way with me, and VOOM. Like a rat out of an aquaduct.

Nth Hobart Oval preferred Grand Final Venue

Here we go again,

Just recently AFL TAS re the Devonport Oval were quoted "AFL Tasmania told the council (Devonport) that night football would be a key part of any future league"

So this means they are supporting night football at Devonport. well no-one argues with that.

So Scott what about North Hobart Oval? Do you support lights there or not?

Assuming you do and the fact Bellerive will never get lights (or most likely not) are you seriously not going to play finals or even a Statewide Grand Final at Nth Hobart Oval Under lights?

And here is the scary thing punters " The AFL Tasmania Board will decied where finals are to be played"

He said they will consult with clubs but "the AFL Tasmania Board will decide where finals are to be played".

Punters you know what this means then

TSL twist for Robins
BY CHLOE HOPE
16/09/2008
THE Ulverstone Football Club has not finished with the state league.
The board has bowed to internal pressure and opened the door to further discussion on the proposal.
A notice went up at the club on Saturday, alerting financial members to the fact that if 30 requests were provided in writing, the board would hold an information meeting on the TSL.

Bid to join state league
BRETT STUBBS
September 16, 2008 12:00am
KINGBOROUGH has put together a bold 11th-hour bid for an invitation to join next season's proposed State League
And there are also rumblings out of North-West powerhouse Ulverstone of second thoughts on the rebirth of the state competition.

Kingborough president Rodney Herweynen and his board made a 25-page powerpoint presentation to AFL Tasmania chairman Dominic Baker and board members Scott Clayton and Mark Ryan outlining the club's and municipality's growth as the reasons it should be invited to the new competition.

"We are seeking an invitation for the opportunity to play State League football in 2009 and we will go for that until they tell us absolutely and finally that that is not the case, then we will have to think about what we are doing after that," Herweynen said yesterday.

"The municipality we have got here and further south, it has got to have a footy team in the top competition, doesn't it?"

AFL Tasmania general manager Scott Wade said the Tigers proposal would be considered.

"The AFL Tasmania directors provided them with a commitment that the Kingborough proposal would be placed on the agenda at the next board meeting, which is scheduled for September 24," Wade said yesterday.

Holding back the Tigers' push is the sub-standard Kingston Beach Oval and the team's on-field performances, which have seen the club's youth-driven policy record just three senior wins in the past two years.

But Herweynen said the Tigers were not far from being competitive and the club was pushing the Kingborough Council hard to start work on a new ground.

The club already has more than 500 members, making it one of the biggest membership bases in Southern Tasmania. It also has a successful under-age program, and Kingborough has been the state's fastest-growing municipality for the past 11 years.

Meanwhile, Ulverstone president Greg Wing said there had been some movement from Robins members to take a second look at the State League.

"Friday night we called a board meeting and decided to put a notice up in the club," Wing said yesterday.

"We asked for all those that wished to find out more about the State League to write a letter and sign it and give it to the board as an expression of interest to find that stuff out.

"If we get enough, we will give AFL Tas a call and have a meeting."

For it to be truly a State wide league and to follow the lead of the almighty AFL this league needs to encompass the whole of the State including a west and east coast team. Imagine facing the might of the West Coast on the gravel oval.......;) At least it wouldn't be all about North South rivalry and would show that there other places in Tassie than North or South. If AFL Tas are really serious about game development why should the kids in these areas miss out.

Why don't we just have a 35-team Statewide League and maybe bring in Mount Pleasant, Ringarooma, Trowutta-City Bulldogs and possibly even resurrect the old Eaglehawk Neck Coutas while we're at it for good measure!

Statewide League semi final match in front of the ABC cameras live from Woodsdale - ohhww would be just excitement city...

Kingborough in the Statewide League before New Norfolk?

HHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......
AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAHHHHHAAAHAHAHAHA......

No.

Having probably never been to Kingborough in my life (can't remember), I can't speak with total authority here, but if it's one of Tassie's faster growing regions, there's a vacancy in the SWL, and these guys are prepared to get off their arses (I'm not seeing New Norfolk actually do this) and launch a serious bid with all the necessary bucks and upgrading, where's the issue?

Track record might say there's been all this rumbling before and nothing's happened, but there's never been a place in an elite comp up for grabs for Kingborough either...

Sounds a lot more promising than West Sydney - at least the locals want the team...!

From all reports Ulverstone is pretty close to going into the Statewide as well. I think they are approaching Penguin in regard to having a central coast team, but word about the place is the players are all for it.

I'm actually looking forward to a Statewide league. The old one was a cracker competition, and if the clubs manage their finances right (and they should be able to given that afl tas is picking up the travel, umpires and ball bills) the standard should be pretty good.

That's a sweetener at the moment, whether it's followed through or not is another thing altogether!
Also heard too that some clubs have requested that the State League has each club field 3 teams (Seniors, Reserves/Under 23 and Under 19/18)

Also in an article from the Advocate about a week ago it says that things (negotiations and questions etc.) are expected to be done by end of October.

A realistic vision? Hahaahahahahahahaahahh :D
Their sole quest is, and has been since 1998 to stop Hobart from ever getting its identity back in any way possible.
If you'd ever been privy to seeing some of the outlandish - in fact ridiculous complaints and requests they've made/had in regard to that - you'd see winning premierships hasn't been all that high on the radar.
Absolute stupidity and small-town syndrome.

They won't get in.
In 2033, a near 70-year old grey-headed businessman called Rodney Herweynan will be on the back page of the Mercury lobbying Kingborough City Council (there'll be a city down there by then) for a new ground in the region.
Once again nothing will be done and 50 years of talks will continue... :p

Who is crowing ????

Not the footy clubs fault. the bloody council is crap. The council are the ones with the land and $$$$ not the footy club. Do you think the players enjoy playing at Kingston Beach?

Bombers in -- but need $2m
BRETT STUBBS
September 19, 2008
UNDERCOVER seating is the priority for Lauderdale after it confirmed it was the ninth team to join the Tasmanian State League for next season.
Lauderdale president Phil Giffard said the club had agreed to join the new league months ago but was waiting until after the finals to publicly announce its acceptance.

He said the club's home ground needed considerable work done to it.

"We need a $2 million white knight," Giffard said yesterday.

"Outside Bellerive Oval, there is no undercover seating all the way up to Bridgewater on any sporting facility on the Eastern Shore.

"Where that money is going to come from, I don't know. We have a very good relationship with our council but $2 million is beyond their means."

Lauderdale joins Hobart, North Hobart, Clarence, Launceston, North Launceston, South Launceston, Burnie and Devonport in the new competition.

Glenorchy remains the only invited team not to commit but is expected to do so soon.
