Re: Post your stats questions here

Essendon were a formidable side in 1962 with a record of 18-2 from memory, and they were one of few sides to beat all their finals opposition in all encounters that year. Remarkable they missed the finals in 1961 and 1963.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Does anyone have any stats that represent the correlation between a player winning a game-day medal and polling 3 votes for that game? And does anyone know if the umpires give votes before or after they are aware who the medal is awarded to?

Can't help with this, but it's an interesting question.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Ron or RR, any chance you could search the database for max. Brownlow votes vs. games won (specifically in the range of 2-11 wins if possible) post 1995?

Also, would be curious to know the record for most consecutive years without an AA representative (Port will make it 4 years straight this year).

H&A matches won, votes, H&A matches played, votes in wins:

Code:
Wn Vt Player Cb Year Ma VW
--------------------------------------
11 21 Peter Matera WC 1997 19 16

 9 22 Matthew Richardson Ri 2008 20 15
 8 23 Mark Ricciuto Ad 2004 22 15
 7 18 Nathan Buckley Co 2000 21 14
 6 24 Nathan Buckley Co 1998 18 9
 5 20 Chris Grant WB 1996 22 8
   20 Scott West WB 2004 22 12
 4 20 Nathan Buckley Co 1999 17 11
 3 10 Matthew Richardson Ri 2004 18 8
   10 Heath Scotland Ca 2006 22 6
 2 11 Peter Bell Fr 2001 19 6

Also, would be curious to know the record for most consecutive years without an AA representative (Port will make it 4 years straight this year).

In the modern era, i.e. since 1991:

7 Fr 1995-01
5 Br 1991-95
4 Ri 1991-94
4 WB 1993-96

Essendon is in the same boat as Port in having its last rep in 2007.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Thanks Ron, much appreciated. Buckley's 1998 season really stands out there, so I had a look at the game-by-game, and liked this:

Rd 12 (35 point loss) - 3 votes
Rd 13 (9 point loss) - 3 votes
Rd 14 (52 point loss) - 3 votes
Rd 15-19 - only played one match, a win, and got injured in it.
Rd 20 (10 point loss) - 3 votes

So he polled 3 votes in 4 consecutive losses that he played in.

Which leads to my next 2 questions:
- Is that the all time record for most consecutive 3 vote losses? What if we changed the criteria to any vote losses?
- Who holds the record for most total Brownlow votes in losses all time?

Remembering that game-by-game votes have only been recorded since 1984...

1) No player has played in four consecutive losses and polled in each. The six players to have polled in three consecutive losses are:

Code:
Player Span 1 2 3
-----------------------------------------
McLean, Michael 1991 5-1991 7 2 3 3
Schwass, Wayne 1994 20-1994 22 1 1 2
Buckley, Nathan 1998 12-1998 14 3 3 3
Fletcher, Adrian 1999 21-2000 1 3 2 1
Camporeale, Scott 2000 19-2000 21 1 2 1
Richardson, Matthew 2008 6-2008 8 2 2 1

The five players to have polled in four consecutive losses discounting wins and draws (which I think is what you meant):

Code:
Player Span 1 2 3 4
----------------------------------------
Daicos, Peter 1987 18-1988 6 1 1 2 1
Schwass, Wayne 1994 15-1994 22 3 1 1 2
Wills, Andrew 1997 3-1997 10 1 1 3 1
Buckley, Nathan 1998 12-1998 20 3 3 3 3
Ablett jnr, Gary 2009 21-2010 13 3 2 1 2

2)

port did in 2007.... i can't think of any others whilst i've been watching (mid 90's) but i imagine it probably happened more back in the VFL period when it was only a top 4 out of 12 teams....

Re: Post your stats questions here

Great stuff, thanks again. :thumbsu:

VL = ?

VLMa = Number of votes per loss?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what do you use for storing/searching the db?

No worries. VL = number of losses in which votes were polled; correct on VLMa.

SQL Server, but I do most ad hoc querying with MS Access via linked tables.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Has a player ever single-handily (more than) doubled an opposition's score before tonight?

Milne: 8.2.50
Adelaide: 3.6.24

Plenty of times pre-WW1, only 14 times since WW2. Most recently, Tippett 5.4 and Porplyzia 5.2 v Fremantle 1.7, R15 2009.

Re: Post your stats questions here

In last night's Channel 7 post game discussion, Tom Harley made a comment along the lines of "If you have a lengthy enough career, you're going to suffer a 100 point loss somewhere along the way". Which, naturally, got me thinking, what would be the top 5/top 10 players who have played the most games without actually suffering a 100 point loss?

If this stat is elsewhere on Big Footy, let me know so we don't repeat ourselves.

only 2 current players have 300 games to their name.... is that not unusually low??

The competition age/experience cycle is in a bit of a lull at present.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Ron, Paul, Roger... anyone?

When was the last time a team beat another team by 100 points or more in a season, only to turn around and lose to them in that same season the next time the two teams met??

(Hoping it doesn't happen to the Eagles tomorrow!!)

Adelaide v Geelong in 1992 is one I can definitely think of... but none since then.

There are a few more examples here.

http://www.rogersresults.110mb.com/Rogers_Results/Scores and Margins/margin_difference.htm

May not be all of them.

I'll have a look later for others as the above are based on amount of difference in the margin not just being beaten by 100 pts. or more per se.

There are 15. West Coast is the only team to do it twice in the same season.
I'll put them up on a web page by tomorrow morning.

Re: Post your stats questions here

Who was the last player to have at least 28 possessions and and at least 6 goals?

Sj again

34 touches, 7.1

9 marks and what must be close to a record 10 goal assists!
