Stephen Coniglio first captain in 22 years to be dropped

"demand being made captain under the threat of leaving".

Did he?
Don’t know about that one but I def read he made it clear he wouldn’t be a captain unless it was as sole captain. Think Cameron initially wanted him a co-captain with Davis but Cogs shot it down

Sounds a bit unbelievable.
I’m trying to find an article on it now but can’t find one. When it was reported they didn’t mak it seem like too big a deal - he just wanted to stamp his own brand on the position, as strong leaders sometimes do.

But looking for that old article I came across a few from last year where Cameron had to deny a rift between football boss Wayne Campbell and Cogs. Campbell then got the heave ho. Who knows? Maybe it’s happy days up there and Cogs is just in shithouse form, or maybe is actually a bad leader and too into himself.

Actually, I think you'll find that game never happened.
WHat game? I have no recollection of that which you talk about.

Back on topic, this is a poor reflection on Cameron. If anyone had the skills to play AFL in your best 22 it's Coniglio. Would be a walk-up start at 17 other clubs.

Time to hand back the keys?

It's weird though because I'm sure I read that when he was made captain Cameron and team mooted him sharing the role and he flatly stated that if he couldn't be the solo captain he wouldn't do it at all. Don't want to stick the boot in to a struggling team and player but maybe he's just... a campaigner?
You have no idea.

From an article in The Age March 13, 2020.
"In a complex and unusual captaincy decision Coniglio was voted in as co-captain with Phil Davis ahead of Callan Ward. But what followed - and [football boss Wayne] Campbell appears to have shouldered the blame for this - was that Ward ultimately reassumed the role he has held since the birth of the club.

This occurred because Coniglio would not share the captaincy. This was nothing against Davis but the younger man did not want to act as co-captain.

Whether or not the players would have backed Coniglio, the view shared by coach Leon Cameron was that the other choice of leader voted for by players and football staff, Davis, deserved to retain the role as well.

According to club insiders, Coniglio's stand was not personal but philosophical. He firmly believed that his style of leadership required a single captain and that the club was ready for that style after seven years of joint captains. It is understood that neither Campbell nor coach Cameron had been prepared for this, nor had the club's executive.

It is not known what was said when the three potential 2019 on-field leaders - Davis, Ward and Coniglio - were left alone in a meeting room at Davis's request to sort out the issue away from club bosses but what emerged was that the status quo prevailed.

What also emerged was the first red flag that signalled the ultimate falling out between two strong personalities in [GWS boss Dave] Matthews and Campbell as their relationship became untenable...

Some at the Giants believe Matthews was critical of Campbell for leaving the players to sort it out...

Whether he [Coniglio] was unhappy with the 2019 captaincy outcome is unclear but he did back Matthews' decision to remove Campbell..."

All does not seem quite right in the big big sound. Just wonder, as other posters have, if this is a bit of a power play by Cameron, especially given this background. We don't what's going on behind closed doors. I'm just saying we should remain open to the possibility that Cogs is, in fact, a campaigner. I hope he's not. But it seems like he might be.

In case that's unclear, the players voted Davis and Cogs captains for 2019, which would have seen Cogs replacing the incumbent Callan Ward. Cogs told them he would not do it unless he was the solo captain. Cogs, Davis, and Ward were locked in a room to resolve it. They emerged and Davis and Ward remained as co-captains, and Cogs, despite having been voted in as co, was not captain, because he refused to share it.

He didn’t seem that bad last week against us. Nothing spectacular about his game but dropping your captain is a big call.

Something stinks at GWS. He shouldn’t be dropped on form, even though he’s below his usual standard. Cameron seems to be placing some players outside their regular positions and they just aren’t responding for him.

Smart of Hawthorn forcing the Giants to overpay for him last year and put them in salary cup difficulty. I hope supporters of 16 other clubs thank us for our amazing strategy.
You've still got a way to go matching north Melbourne in the "make other clubs overpay" stakes

Yes, Cogs is plsying out of position and was a bizare choice of captain - but he has been ordinary all year. He deserved to be dropped.
