Stephen Coniglio first captain in 22 years to be dropped

One of the most bizarre things to happen in the AFL in recent times. So you're saying Coniglio even at his very worst isn't worthy of being picked over Connor Idun, Jack Buckley or Tom Green? And there's no NEAFL games for him to go and 'regain' form, and even if there was what purpose would that serve? Of course he's going to have 45 touches and 3 goals at that level.

Tom Morris from Fox Footy got it wrong.

Richie Vandenberg was the Hawks cap

Tom Morris from Fox Footy got it wrong.

Hawks captain Richie Vanderberg between 2005-07 was dropped twice during the 2007 season. He played 5 games in the Hawthorn reserves (Box Hill) due to poor form.

Tony Shaw made a comment on radio saying Vandenberg wasn't in the Hawks best 22. Craig Hutchison made a few comments too which resulted in Alastair Clarkson clashing with him after a game.

Other captains dropped due to poor form.

Worsfold in the 1st QF 1998
Gary Ayres in 1993
Steve Malaxos in 1990
From memory Vandenberg was never actually dropped. It was more he was injured then when fit couldn't force his way back into the team

Who was the last one dropped?

Fun Friday game, when have captains been dropped by their club?

From the Eagles I think Malaxos might have been by Malthouse, Worsfold was omitted from a final in his last year as a player I think...
Jarryn Geary? Probably 'managed' a few times but not in Saints best 22.

Says more about the contract extension of the coach than anything else.
Perhaps players were expecting a new voice?
Still, if GWS make finals, they are so talented that they can beat anyone but Richmond on their day.

It's been reported that was part of his contract, and that he's the one who said he wanted to be captain.
Agree with you. Demanding to be captain is gross. And runs contrary to getting the best out of the group (which is priority one for any outstanding leader). The best leaders need not make a case for their hiring, it is evident to everyone in the club if you are a true captain.

From an article in The Age March 13, 2020.
"In a complex and unusual captaincy decision Coniglio was voted in as co-captain with Phil Davis ahead of Callan Ward. But what followed - and [football boss Wayne] Campbell appears to have shouldered the blame for this - was that Ward ultimately reassumed the role he has held since the birth of the club.

This occurred because Coniglio would not share the captaincy. This was nothing against Davis but the younger man did not want to act as co-captain.

Whether or not the players would have backed Coniglio, the view shared by coach Leon Cameron was that the other choice of leader voted for by players and football staff, Davis, deserved to retain the role as well.

According to club insiders, Coniglio's stand was not personal but philosophical. He firmly believed that his style of leadership required a single captain and that the club was ready for that style after seven years of joint captains. It is understood that neither Campbell nor coach Cameron had been prepared for this, nor had the club's executive.

It is not known what was said when the three potential 2019 on-field leaders - Davis, Ward and Coniglio - were left alone in a meeting room at Davis's request to sort out the issue away from club bosses but what emerged was that the status quo prevailed.

What also emerged was the first red flag that signalled the ultimate falling out between two strong personalities in [GWS boss Dave] Matthews and Campbell as their relationship became untenable...

Some at the Giants believe Matthews was critical of Campbell for leaving the players to sort it out...

Whether he [Coniglio] was unhappy with the 2019 captaincy outcome is unclear but he did back Matthews' decision to remove Campbell..."

All does not seem quite right in the big big sound. Just wonder, as other posters have, if this is a bit of a power play by Cameron, especially given this background. We don't what's going on behind closed doors. I'm just saying we should remain open to the possibility that Cogs is, in fact, a campaigner. I hope he's not. But it seems like he might be.
Every single person who has had anything to do with him say he is a person of the highest quality.

Nah, in 2007 Vandenberg was definitely dropped or not selected in the team due to poor form.

In 2007, he played rounds 7,8 13, 14 & 15 in the Hawthorn reserves (Box Hill) and in the Hawthorn seniors in round 6, 17-19, 21-22, EF & SF.

2007 was the last season he played.

2007 he had a number of injuries. Which is why he missed blocks of games.

Point?, he's had his ups and downs. was arguably up the most around the signing time...

Interesting list. You forgot all the pea heart swans players though. Josh Kennedy has been living off reputation for years now. He is an ineffective and irrelevant AFL player

Kennedy is cooked. Agree.

There is a difference between over rated and cooked.
Most of my list are under 30.
