Big V spur for Sewell

Jackie Epstein | April 27, 2008 12:00am

HAWTHORN'S Brad Sewell has admitted his disappointment at being overlooked by Victorian selectors for Saturday week's Hall of Fame match.

Sewell was one of several notable omissions in the 40-man squad selected by coach Mark Thompson, assistant coach Kevin Sheedy and captain Jonathan Brown.

"It'd be nice to get a call up, but there are a lot of guys who it will be hard to squeeze in there," he said.

"I'm sure there were a lot of guys who were disappointed. It would have been an honour to play on the night. Not only a highlight for the night or the year, but the rest of your career.

"But there's only a certain amount of guys who can play."

Sheedy flew to Brisbane last weekend to watch the Hawks play the Lions.

Sewell, a midfielder, was second best on ground for his 27-disposal effort in the team's win, but Sheedy did not rate the performance.

"He played a good solid game . . . he was not startling," Sheedy said, adding Sewell was "absolutely still a chance".

The Hawks' best and fairest winner said he noted the comments.
"I glanced over them," he said.

"What can you do? A little bit disappointing I guess. But it'll certainly be nice to have a week off anyway. Relax and catch up with a few friends and let the body recover a bit.

"We've got to play Richmond this week and that's where the focus is."
Sheedy also mentioned he was keen to find team balance against a Dream Team squad loaded with quick talent.

"The hardest part about picking the Victorian team is the rest of Australia is going to have speed, speed, speed everywhere," Sheedy said.
"He (Sewell) doesn't have a lot of speed."

Sewell disagreed.

"There's that perception, but I'm pretty quick," he said.

I'm not unhappy he hasn't been selected, but by christ - isn't he going to bore those three blokes a new one at every opportunity from now on.

Sheedy should just stick to selling the game - he is good at that and still has some currency.

Getting himself in football matters is eroding that currency at a extraordinary rate. The game passed him by 5 years ago when he ran out of ideas to change the rules and get an unfair jump on other sides.

Ling is a big, unco, dorky goose with average skills who has actually achieved his potential and then some, and the Big V is welcome to him as far as I'm concerned.

he does have an obsession with speed doesnt he?

a speedy runner is no good to you if his disposal is poor. sewell has awesome disposal 99.9% of the time

People forget Sewell played as a BP against the likes of Gablett, Farmer etal. He was never taken to the cleaners and ususally held them to almost no influence on the game.

No pace! Don't give me the sh!ts

I think that Sheeds still likes to stir the Hawks.

No love lost as far as he is concerned.

Sewell isn't quick because he's not indigenous and doesn't wear white boots.Apparently that's all you need going for you to be quick

Seriously, what planet has needy Sheedy been living on - Sewell isn't quick? I've been reading this for nearly a week now, and I still don't get where it comes from. He was always quick - it was one of his biggest assets before he learnt how to kick.

Now he's stronger, faster, and able to break a tackle thrown at him by anyone. I hope Sheedy enjoys watching Sewell rack up browlow votes for a few years....

Anyone remember him running down Judd in Launceston last year? Not even sure Judd was injured then.

Agreed. Sewell is very quick - I would go so far as to say he is one of the quickest blokes at the club. Cambell Brown might be quicker, Rioli obviously and maybe Buddy too. Not to many others though. Would have to be our quickest midfielder - I think ahead of Crawf and Bateman over most football distances (<30m). It must be so frustrating for Sewell to miss out and then just be given this absolutely ridiculous reason from a bloke who is either not watching much football or who has truly gone senile.

Jarryd Oakley Nichols is apparently quick - perhaps Sheeds should give him a geurnsey.

Sheedy has always had the habit of not giving a straight answer. Ask him about why his team was losing, and he would say something about injuries. Ask him about this and he would try to confuse us talking about that.

The reason he sounds stupid is because we actually get to read his comments instead of hear them in an interview. His comments are usually irrelevant enough as it is, even when taken in context of the interview.

When his comments are taken by themselves, they are often shown to be not very insightful or insensible.

At least he didn't blame Martians for not picking Sewell.
