It looks like our players are fired up and really competative for this time of year which is a great sign in my book.

Tomorrow morning they are having a Strong Man competition amongst themselves at Coorparoo. If I can drag myself out of bed in time I'll try and go and get some pictures. The tasks apparently include a beer keg carrying contest and the cliche 'truck pull'!!!!

Is anyone else from here going for a gander?

Hubby and his mate went down for a gawk. He said a few names were MIA (or he just didn't see them), including Michael, Leppitsch & Charman. Power was assisting in the Van pull - he was supposed to just walk along holding the rope but there was some conjecture on how many times he actually assisted someone by pulling the rope. Vossy wasn't competing but offering plenty of encouragement from the sidelines. Competative spirit was apparently running high. Akermanis took it as seriously as usual, making sure he brought out the non-slip gloves and doing his two hands in the air salute after he thought he had a good go at whatever task he was competing in. Merrett was a bit of a dark horse and competed very well.

There was an article in today's paper about it too.

THE early money was on bullocking forward Jonathan Brown (pictured) but second-year rookie Marty Pask yesterday proved himself to be the Lions' strongest man.

With Brown restricted to just three of the six events at Coorparoo, Pask won the over 90kg heavyweight division while new draftee Joel Patfull won the under 90kg event.

Brisbane's strength and conditioning coaches Lachlan Penfold and Alex Moore came up with the idea to mimic the world's strongest man competition as a break from regular training.

Penfold said: "They've been training hard and this is a recovery week so we thought we'd have a bit of fun."

"The medical staff have ruled out a few of the boys but others like Brownie (Jonathan Brown), who only had three events, have been psyching up for it."

Events included a keg run, a medicine ball throw, a farmer's walk – in which players had to carry weights – a rope pull and pulling the football club's van.

Premiership player Robbie Copeland put an early scare through the group when he pulled up in his father's 10-tonne truck and quipped that the van was out and the truck was in.

New Irish recruit Colm Begley fell heavily during the keg run but like a good Irish lad made sure he didn't drop the brew.

Goal sneak Ash McGrath wasn't happy with his time in the van pull and braved a second bout of rope burn to record a faster time.

But it wasn't enough to beat midfielder Richard Hadley.

In the lightweight division, last season's best-and-fairest Jason Akermanis came second in the keg run but big Daniel Merrett was the surprise packet.

Merrett, who played 15 games last year, went head-to-head with Brown and "Big Guns" Daniel Bradshaw. But Merrett flexed the biggest muscles.

Brown said: "It's all good fun and it's good to have something different.

"We've seen the world's strongest man competition on TV . . . and the events are a good indicator of raw strength."

Should Brown and any of his teammates need some advice, conditioning coach Moore – who worked with the Sydney Swans and rugby's Waratahs last year – should be their first point of call.

Moore won his weight division at the world's strongest man competition in Sydney in 2003.

Did anyone get up early enough to take some photos of the Strong Man Competition?
I would like to see some photos of the winners.
If so, how can I get to see these photos ?
