I would expect the forward line matchups to look something like this on Sunday.
Fletcher v Williams
Bradley/McPhee v Croad

Roughead v Lucas
Smith v Hird
Possibly C.Johns in as full forward with Dawson or Jacobs pitted against.

Fletcher was pretty good on Williams at the start of last year so I hope that Croad can have another blinder on whoever picks him up. Roughead played well on Lucas last time and Smith seems to be a reasonable matchup for Hird.
Would expect the game to be decided in the midfield thus hope our midfield form continues.
If Essendon are to win Hille would need to be BOG.

We have the advantages going in to this game which worries me.
Hopefully a good game and another Hawks win.

hmmm... I'd really like someone bigger with more body strength on Hird... as much as I like the guy and think he's a superstar, knocking him around a bit may be beneficial to us.

The best part of the match-ups this week is of course Nobody versus Lloyd!

who will clinton young match up. Like A monfries or lovett youngy has the leg speed to go with lovett??

Smith isn't that much smaller than Hird. But fwiw, don't think he'll take him anyway. Reckon they'll give the task to Crusher Sewell at least to start off with.

Match-ups could be interesting all over on Sunday. Will they let McPhee take Willo? He's probably got the speed, height to go with him and place Fletcher further out on Croad? Even though they normally don't like moving Fletcher away from the true full-back, they did it Tuesday and McPhee played a good game on Tarrant on the last line. Remembering Croad beat Bradley comfortably last time out as well.

Wonder how they'll handle Hodge. Rotate players on him like the J's and Solly and try to wear him down over the match? Lucas worries me even though Roughie did very well on him last time out. Class footballer the big left footer.

Like most games for us, it'll get back to the midfield. If we can get good quality service out of Hodge, Craw, Sam etc, it'll go a long way towards a win.

Agree with Grendel in that Sewell will get the big task on Hird. Has had some massive names where he has done well so far (Riciouto, Ablett etc.) so he'll get first crack at Hirdy.

I think McPhee will actually get Croad, has strength and pace. Fletcher normally gets the number two forward, and might get Dixon. I think they'll play a smaller guy on Williams... not sure who yet. On the Essendon board they seem to think that as well, but I don't know their smaller defenders that well.

It'll be interesting who plays on Lucas from our point of view. Smith might get a go, Roughead to play in the square, Dawson and Jaccobs whoever is left over.

Just picked up on the AFL board that someone has heard a news report saying Hird has done a hammy.

Fletcher to play full forward on Zac

for this reason, i would start Zac on the bench.
Sheedy will be going ga ga at that match-up at the start of the game, then guess what! Zac starts on the bench and Smith takes FB.
That would stuff up Sheedys move.

McViegh on willow.
McPhee on Croad at CHF
Roughead on Lucas to start. Or swap with Smith if getting cut up.

agree with sewell can take hird all day long.
Monfries needs to be kept an eye on as well, Ozzie to get that.
And Mad dog to back pocket on a long leash and a muzzle to stop him from tearing anyone appart.

The Hird match-up might be a moot point.

Rumour (for what they're worth) that he's done a hamstring at training.

If this proves the case.. geez.. we're getting a nice run here (not that I'm knocking it).

No Lloyd, Hird in doubt, five day break. Okay, I'll take it.

I'd have Smith on Hird. I recall a few years back at Waverley Crawf played a fantastic game on Mr Hird. Don't think it will happen this time. I'd have Roughhead on Lucas.

Real danger game for us.

Scum have lost 3 on the trot and the last time they lost 4 was 1998.

Our win in 1997 did come 4th in a run of 6 against them so there is hope.

Or last run of more than 3 wins was the end of 2003. A good win would put some serious doubts in their minds.

Hawks name squad of 25

Hawthorn has named a squad of 25 for Sunday’s game against Essendon, which includes Tim Boyle for his first game of the year.

Boyle, who played three games last season, has been named on the extended bench along with Nick Ries, Grant Birchall, and Ben Kane who have also come into the team. The only omission is Michael Osborne who has been sidelined with a bruised foot.

After being rookie listed by the Hawks in December last year Kane was selected as the Club’s nominated rookie in March, allowing him to be eligible for senior selection throughout the entire premiership season without actually being elevated to the senior list. Ries has been named on the extended bench after serving as an emergency for the first rounds of the season.

This week’s game marks Hawthorn’s return game to the MCG and after beating the Essendon in Round 20 last year the Hawks will be looking to record consecutive wins against the Bombers since 1991.

Hawthorn team

B: Sewell, Dawson, Jacobs
HB: Brown, Roughead, Guerra
C: Smith, Hodge, Bateman
HF: Crawford, Croad, Ladson
F: Dixon, Campbell, Williams
,b>FOLL: Everitt, Vandenberg, Mitchell
I/C from: Ries, Lewis, Clarke, Young, Boyle, Birchall, Kane
IN: Boyle, Birchall, Ries, Kane
OUT: Osborne (bruised foot)

Hmm: Ozzie out. No great loss. Enough smalls, time for a Boyle or Birchall.

Interesting to see 2 changes in 5 rounds of footy, good stuff.

And what would a good win for our team put in Hawks' supporters' minds?

Would love to see Dermie get a game... but it's just not on the cards.
Anyone think he'll be a little sore if we make a real go of it this year? What a bad time to leave the club!

Ries in Osborne Out

From AFL.com
"Hawthorn has made just one change ahead of its match against Essendon at the MCG on Sunday with Nick Ries coming in for the injured Michael Osborne.

Osborne picked up a foot injury in last week's 32-point win over Carlton and will miss his first game of the season, while 23-year-old Ries comes in for his first home-and-away match this year.

Tim Boyle, Grant Birchall and Ben Kane were named in the extended squad published on Thursday, but all have been dropped back to the emergency list.

Essendon has made two changes as they search for their second win of the season with Mark Bolton and Damien Peverill coming back into the side after a week and a fortnight out respectively.

Bolton will play his 100th AFL game when he lines up on Sunday - a milestone that Peverill himself only reached in round two.

Dean Rioli has been rested after making his first appearance of the season on Anzac day while Ricky Dyson has been omitted.

He has been named as an emergency along with Jay Nash and Joel Reynolds."

Hardly an attacking option. Seems they want to keep the mid field rotations going, maybe exploit the Scums lack of preparation for the game and run them off their feet?

I've got to say; McPhee on Croad, Fletcher on Willo
Hille is a big worry for Hawks, Spider
has to get with it now. Midfield, Hawks
on top. Look out for Monf, Lucas & Lovett
I want Hawks to win but Tipped the scum Just!:(

RE: HIRD: Apparantly experiencing h'string tightness, no tear or pull, and has a lighter training schedule to make sure hes ok for the weekend

The word 'apparantly' means very little however coming from the EFC...

Look forward to another tough game as usual with the Hawks...:thumbsu:

Ries in Osborne Out

cant believe it! this club allowed nick ries to play:mad:

why cant they pick forwards??? you know guys over 190 cm! whats wrong with our coaching staff... are they afraid our side might play attractive football or is clarko surperstitous we will lose by picking someone taller than he is.????

you dont always win games with little guys just look at the bullies this week.

nick ries run essendon off their feet?? he is slower than ben dixon and has shocking skills....ahhhhh

i cant stand this club settling for mediocracy all the time, STOP PLAYING SMALL :D :D :D :D PLAYERS.

As stated in the Boyle thread, Ries looked great at training on Friday.

Very fit, good skills, worked very hard. Worked with Crawf for the last 20 minutes and looked very sharp.

Happy for Ries to be in the side, it is his last year unless he shows something we havent seen yet, but he does look much fitter and stronger than in previous years.

Good luck to the kid, better foot skills than Clarke!!!

Other training note, Dawson had a worse day than the Coll match! Dropped easy marks, missed targets, Spider (and quite a few others) were very unimpressed. Maybe Dawson late withdrawal and Boyle the inclusion?
