The positional moves every club should make for the 2023 season

GOLD COAST

1. Play Jack Lukosius down back

After impressing with his ball use from the back-half of the ground, Lukosius was thrown forward in 2022. He had his moments in his former position but is he a better AFL player as a defender?

2. Unleash Mac Andrew

The No. 5 pick had to wait until the final four games of the season to get his chance at AFL level and showed off his raw talent. The Suns must keep this going despite a club-imposed two game suspension after he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol on New Year’s Eve.

3. Play Ben Long consistently as a half-back

The former Saint was used in a variety of positions by St Kilda in 2022. But two years prior he impressed for St Kilda in a consistent role off half-back.

Trying to figure out Luko’s best position is a really perplexing one. He’s the best kick we have but he’s not the best player for any one position.

Ballard has him covered as our third tall defender and Jeffrey has him covered as our third tall forward.

Very high half forward / wing roaming between the arcs seems to suit his skill set best to me

Don’t think of him as a forward or defender but as a link player between the two. He’s not physically strong enough to play as a key defender or forward, and his ‘casual’ style doesn’t suit playing in the guts a la tall midfielders of a similar height (eg Cripps / Bontempelli).

Very interested to see his physical development this year. Could go a long way to determining where he eventually settles.

Definitely a linking player.

Think we’ll see his value delivering lasers inside 50 to Ben King this year.

I think roaming half forward - wing is his best spot for our team.

Edit:
To elaborate.
I think his best personal position at the moment would probably be half back.

But I think ultimately he could be a game changing player in our front half if he can continue to develop a bit more physicality and presence over the loose ball. I think we should persist with him there. Switching him back to half back is just a short term move IMO.

Look at the value. Shocking. Very lucky he did not hurt/kill someone.

Mac Andrew: Gold Coast Suns star escapes conviction after high-range drink driving

The court heard Andrew was stopped at 1.50am after police observed his “poor” manner of driving.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Adams said the vehicle “had swerved in and out of the lanes” while driving in Broadbeach Waters.

Sen Cons Adams told the court Andrew had consumed two shots of Fireball whisky and “four or five” vodka sodas before hitting the road to head home.

Andrew blew 0.156, more than three times the legal alcohol limit.
The solicitor said Andrew had undergone widespread public scrutiny and media attention since the news broke, and had also lost $10,000 as a result a two-game suspension handed down by the Suns. Mr Hannay explained that Andrew had been out celebrating the birthday of a school friend, who was visiting the Gold Coast from Victoria.
Andrew was fined $1000 and disqualified for six months, having already been off the roads for three weeks.

Let’s hope he’s genuinely remorseful and wants to make amends. If not I fear we might have another one who wants to slink back to Victoria or somewhere else when the going gets too tough. That was an incredibly stupid thing do. Far worse than I thought it to previously.

Haha just noticed it again… Gold Coast Suns “STAR”… all 4 games of him. Bloody media.

I think the media should be fined $1000 every time they call a player a star when they clearly aren’t one.

I hate that STAR crap

IMO, Herald probably missed extension of Sexton and Fiorini to spread their contracts as reported. I would also expect Uwland, Ace and Jed Anderson out of contract.

WHO IS IN THE LAST YEAR OF CONTRACT?

Alex Sexton, Nick Holman, Brayden Fiorini, Sam Day, Noah Anderson, Jeremy Sharp, James Tsitas, Sam Flanders, Levi Casboult, Charlie Constable, Oskar Faulkhead, Malcolm Rosas Jr, Sandy Brock, Jy Farrar, Connor Blakely, Jake Stein, Tom Berry.
