St Kilda is delighted to announce the appointment of Danny Sexton as Defensive Coach and Troy Schwarze as Specialist Coach (Midfield) for 2012.

Sexton has a wealth of football experience both as a player and coach. He had seven years playing at Port Melbourne before going on to coach Diamond Valley, Calder Cannons U/16 and U/18 plus was Head Coach at the Northern Knights before joining St Kilda as a Development Coach in 2006.

Sexton joins Adam Kingsley (Offensive Coach) and Dean Laidley (Midfield Coach) as one of St Kilda’s three Line Coaches in the AFL Program for the 2012 season, with a new Opposition Analyst to be appointed in the coming weeks.

Schwarze, 29, played 71 games for the Saints (1999-2006) and has enjoyed recent success as Senior Coach at the Sorrento Football Club (Victoria).

Since joining the Sharks in 2007, Schwarze has led Sorrento to three premierships and earned a fantastic reputation for forging outstanding community relations.

The three Specialist Coaches will work closely with the respective Line Coaches during the weekly training program and on match days.

Although he never managed to become a permanent fixture in the team during the following two seasons, (Troy Schwarze) still felt his AFL career would continue.

That all changed when Grant Thomas was axed last September. Initially, Schwarze received only positive signs from the Saints' new coach Ross Lyon. But in October, with little warning, he, too, was shown the door.

"I went to training on the first day of pre-season and the next day they sacked me," Schwarze said. "Plus they offered me a contract and then pulled it out. I was about to sign but they withdrew it."

Schwarze already had experienced enough ups and downs to last a lifetime. But it was the mature way he handled himself that most impressed his former mentor.

When Thomas received a call from some mates at the Sorrento Football Club asking if he could recommend them a new coach, he directed them straight to Schwarze.

Having positioned himself at centre half-forward, Schwarze copped plenty from the crowd as he struggled to impose any influence on the match. He kicked a classy running goal in the third quarter but when a Tyabb youngster booted an immediate reply, one supporter delighted in yelling out: "At least that didn't cost us 20 grand!"

Troy Schwarze still loves AFL football, but says it can be suffocating and that some are better off away from it all.

Mind you, not for a moment, would he swap his seven seasons including a final at St Kilda.

It's just that it was all-consuming and he was unable to do anything outside a sport now fully professional.

The 26-year-old says he can enjoy a beer after a game and get away and indulge his family, wife Kim and baby daughter Belle at weekends.

"You don't realise how big footy is until you step away from it," he says.

"Once you have stepped away, you realise it takes up everything in your life. Every day it fills up the newspapers. All you watch at the weekends is football.

"At the time it would have been nice to have still stayed there (at St Kilda), but I wouldn't change anything for the world now. Life is more relaxing when you're not playing."

If he could have his time again, he says he would be a more complete player for the experience of coaching, but has few regrets about having his career terminated.

"As a coach you are continually learning," he says.

Schwarze has been playing at centre half-back and has carried his AFL nickname of "Wool" to his adopted club.

"I think my hair is even curlier now I'm coaching,"

Troy Schwarze is building quite a coaching record.

Appointed Sorrento playing-coach a day after being delisted by St Kilda in 2006, he's taken the club to the finals in each of his four seasons at the helm, including two premierships and a runners-up finish.

The Sharks have been in the past three grand finals, their record reading: 1st, 2nd, 1st.

Wool is going to be midfield coach - so long as he doesn't teach them how to do weak pathetic fake injuries like Carlton mid Squib Gibbs tries to in that video, I'll be happy.

How much did Schwarz play midfield? Thought he was mainly a rebounding back

Yeah, mainly - but was a true utility, and never really settled into the one position. Sounds like he's been doing more of the same at Sorrento! 5 seasons of coaching makes him pretty rounded though. And Laidley is the main line coach (midfield) anyway.

Anyone else want to take drugs today? (we need some more e!)

I think because we've got such an experienced main midfield coach in Laidley, Wool's job isn't so much to focus on the technicalities of midfield play. Given his exceptional coaching skills with Seaford, he's there for two reasons: firstly, he's a direct link to the local community, which helps build greater support across the region; secondly, he can help with the more general mentality and motivation for young mids. Given that it's just a very VERY part time role (I'd be surprised if it's even .2fte), I also suspect the Saints are just giving him a foot in the door into AFL coaching - he's got the runs on the board at a lower level, and may be starting with this small appointment to gain more AFL experience, on the way to hopefully becoming more involved as an assistant coach down the line.

I'm avoiding the "e" Squizz, by playing it safe and just calling him "Wool" - the same as I just call Kosi "Kosi", to save myself from mucking up the spelling and accidentally swearing in his name.

like him as a player, must be a good lower league coach and glad to see him back. hope he does well. i might be wrong but didn't he hold down FB early on in one our bad years and do really well considering the ball was down there alot?

That's confirmed. He can only play a handful of games for barwon heads this season due to his running duties with the saints. I still have a signed framed photo of Tony brown thanks to his Dad, who was my principal at high school. Good to see some ex players you wouldn't usually think about, brown, schwarze etc, as well as the bigger names like max and Sammy helping out as well.

Aargh I left my seat I think after Aussie kicked that 'point' cause I couldnt deal with close finishes and I miss THAT. Still my biggest regret in life.

You want to talk about that game, me and dad and a family friend walk up and while me and dad had memberships our friend didn't so we had to buy tickets and it was sold out, so we had to go cos we couldn't send a kid back on the train alone. I got back for the rest of the game on TV but I always regret not being there.

The Brisbane game was one of the few times I've got a gig in the Medallion section. It was great being on the other side to the "Moorabbin Wing". The roof nearly lifted off that night with a similar roar to when Lockett kicked his 10th in 1989. Would've been awesome to be behind Schwota's kick and scream it through. By the way - Aussie's kick faded after going over the point post (not at least a metre wide as SOS claimed when working in the media!).
