Interesting. I guess the fitness levels were not at an acceptable level.

what does 'high performance manger' role actually entail?

The High Performance Manager is responsible for planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of specific elements of the high performance sport system of the sport in question. The High Performance Manager monitors and provides support to the Coaching staff and High Performance Committee and monitors and assists the development and implementation of a comprehensive athlete development system which includes: team programs, coaching staff liaison, Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), sport science and medicine, officiating development, event assistance and athlete assistance and support.

Bit like that.

Someone on our board suggested that Watters wants to go down the Buttifant route i.e. using high altitude training and that Burge wasn't that keen on going that way as none of his programs have incorporated that.

Your mob has got a man who believes in high-altitude training which Watters believes in, we have our man who is more about traditional speed and power training, which is what Hardwick believes in. Win win for both clubs I believe in getting the best fit for each club.

And then there is the Dogs. Left out in the cold with no one. No wonder they're bitter.

At the B&F, Watters talked about the fitness aspect of this almost as an aside. His interest seems to be the potential to identify and develop leadership qualities in the group. For a relatively new coach this environment would be invaluable - to see how the players react to different situations and each other (and break up any cliques that might exist at home base).

Can someone translate this into English for us. Is it "Runs the physical training program?"

High Performance Manager = Mid manager that dabbles in everything.

Coaching section
-Head coach/GM, Operations Manager & HoD -> Perm Assistants -> Development coaches -> Specialised Coaches (ie Maxie)
--Recruiting managers
--Media & training staff

Medical section
-Doctors/physios/etc -> strength & conditioning -> player welfare services -> whatever other services the club provides.

This goes on and on as each branch within the football club has their own hierarchy, their own support structure and so on so forth, the High Performance Manager is basically a "you liason with the chief medical, the GM, the Operations, the media, everything involving the player in a playing capacity." It's like a one stop shop role if you need info or something altered, or a different perspective.

This.

If he advocates an approach that the club doesn't want, you can't blame him if he "sucks". If I'm a doctor in a town, and I advocate anti-biotics, and my town refuses to use them - then all I'm left with is, "uh, have these vitamin c tablets." If they all keep getting sick, that's not because I suck, it's just a difference in approach.

Hardwick would have had the connection with Burge from when he was assistant at the Hawks, yes?

Correct. And if word is correct we tried to get him last year but he chose the Saints top job compared to being 2nd in command at the Tigers. So an understandable decision but obviously Watters, who would have barely been at St Kilda when Burge was hired, realised during the year their philosophies didn't match.
