Autopsy Swans vs North Round 17, 2018

I've often wondered if on game day, clubs have at least one staff member assigned to listening in to all the broadcasts of the game just in case the commentators say something the staff down on the ground are overlooking. Could be a match-winning point of difference in a close one.

So, on Sunday, with 3:55 on the clock, BT: "James Bartel, Swans are seven points down, just under 4 minutes to go, what have they got to do?"

Bartel: "Mix things up a bit. Try something different. Put Aliir up in the forward line."

1:53 on the clock: Defender Aliir kicks his first-ever AFL goal, to win the match.
Sounds good, but I don't reckon that they do...

This puts things into more perspective the point i was making quite lucky to follow such a high standard club.

When you take into account Kennedy really only played the first quarter, deduct his age and experience and it makes it even more impressive!

I have to give credit to James Brayshaw. He was excellent at just calling the game in a non-bias manner and even criticised two absolute gift frees to Ben Brown. Was kind of refreshing considering some commentators (Dunstall, Bruce, Brereton etc) barrack even when their own team isn’t involved

I agree. Hadn’t heard him before. Is he usually on Fox? I don’t have cable.

Yes he was very even handed and considering he (anywhere else I've seen him) comes across as an absolute knob, he's probably currently one of my favourite commentators.
Gotta say that Taylor wasn't anywhere near as annoying with him for company either.

Mostly, I only can't stand Bruce and BT. Everyone else is pretty mediocre with a one or two who are great (and I can never remember who they are until I hear them again, lol!). I don't generally find that any of them barrack particularly, I just think they talk too much, and give their opinion too much rather than concentrate on calling the game.

Very good call. I was dreading it before the game, but he was great - got genuinely excited at some of the Swans' passages of play.

I'm a fan of BT. Despite his nonsense (which is often rather funny), he has a keen eye for what's going on in the match and has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the players (and the backrooms of almost every club too!).

Was anyone else embarrassed though by how much they went on about the Aliir/Daw matchup? It made me cringe - not only was it over-the-top, the only adjective they ever seemed to use was "athletic". Like how they always call Aboriginal players "magic". It was definitely worth mentioning, but not the orgasmic carry-on that came every time the ball went even remotely close to them.

Yes, it was incredibly cringe-worthy imo. Imagine their families sitting at home... oh yeah, we're definitely intergrated now, they must treat everyone like this...

Edit: And yes BT knows a lot, it's just that I'm watching the game and want him to shut up! He talks way too much

Im not sure if we can win it this year but we are building something special with this list if you looked just at the forward line there was Franklin surrounded by Ronke, Hayward, Papley, McCartin and Heeney.
We have some ridiculous talent 22 and under on our list. It's quite remarkable considering our lack of early picks and level of cap pressure with the contracts of Franklin, Tippet and removal of cola. Even more remarkable when you compare our young talent to many of the sides who've consistently finished in the bottom 8.

Did you see the Collingwood poster on the What I Liked, Learned and Hated thread on the MB who described Roaming Brian as the bastard love-child of David Attenborough and Alan Funt? (Of course you’d have to be old enough to remember Candid Camera but I thought that description was a hoot!)

Agree with the latter part. But I wouldn't put us winning the whole thing out of the question. You'd back us in home finals. Hell I'd back us in in a final v West Coast over there or v Port over there.

The gf, just gotta turn up on the day. We have a bunch of kids who will be full of energy come September who will be chomping at the bit to get stuck into it. Alot of these kids don't have the bad memories of 14, 16.

Yes. Same. The commentary team engaging in "oh..look at the Africans" was cringe.

Yeh, I was in this camp too. It was absolutely worth highlighting. And given recent hysterical media coverage of "African youth gangs", the symbolism of it could have been quite easily put across tastefully, but it really got embarrassing. In a game as athletic as footy, the commentators salivating over Daw's and Aliir's "athleticism" any time they were in frame came across as very over-the-top and a little condescending. And I'm maybe BT's biggest fan for his OTT antics. But he was being completely sincere with this and it was just off-putting.

I was wondering what Daw and Aliir themselves would have thought of it if they had heard how much the commentators were going on about it.

When was the last time we conceded 98 points and won the game?
Round 19 2012 v Bulldogs 134-99

Edit: This was a 2013 game, not 2012. Apologies.
