SWFL and A Grade are pretty equal comps. The difference is A grade Clubs (most of them barring Stirling) have alot more depth than SWFL clubs so there isn't such a large gap in Quality. A grade teams don't have as many High Quality Players purely because they don't have the cash but they are alot fitter than the SWFL teams. I've played in both leagues so im judging by what i've come across. Too hard to say - North Beach would probably be up there for premiership contention in the SWFL comp.

How are all the teams haping up for this weeks opening round? Who has recruited well, who has lost some quality and can anyone get close to Carey Park this season. Any predictions on how the season will unfold. Whats everyones thoughts on the following:

I think this pre season has been hard to guage with most sides not fielding full strength sides in their practice matches and in the pre season carnival. Sides such as Busselton, Collie and Augusta Margaret River never get much talk in the local (Bunbury) media so are a relatively unknown quantity going into the season proper.

Carey Park have lost a few key players such as Shane Nani, Michael Finn, Brendan Carlson and Liam McGuire, but seem to have those losses covered by former Port Adelaide rookie Matt Martin, premiership ruckman Dan Atkinson, Dom Foster and David Bongiasca from East Fremantle. They have also gained the services of Trent Murdoch (South Bunbury), Shane Howison and Corey McGuire (both Bunbury). On paper their best team looks extremely strong again and should be gunning for a third premiership in a row.

South Bunbury have had some massive losses over the summer with leading goalkicker Brynn Francis heading to Brigades in Geraldton, David Lucas & Jarrad Andrew retiring, Dylan Bairstow to South Fremantle, Ray Daniels and Chris Andrew to Swan Districts, Damien Johns to Karratha as well as James Kerr, Jay Betts, Al McKenzie and Matt Hansen moving on. On the plus side Blake Arnold (West Perth), Tyson Lee (Manjimup), Tim Malseed (South Fremantle) as well as Brendan Blizzard and Tim Gee from Tasmania join the club. Perhaps this could be a year Souths promote some of their promising juniors. Regardless of his methods, Mark Bayliss never seems far from the Grand final so with a few more accquisitions the Tigers could again challenge.

Harvey Brunswick Leschenault came home strongly last year winning 10 on the trot until the Preliminary final. New coach Heath Black retains the bulk of last years squad with Joe McEvoy retiring and recruits Tim Nelli, Casey Malone and Luke Ancell moving on. The Lions regain big Scott Wescombe after a year off as well as former Captain Mark Foster. 2007 Hayward medallist John Klumpp will be available all year and last years player/coach Kingsley Walker is back free from the coaching responsibilityy. The Lions look to be around the mark again with a solid squad of youth and experience.

Bunbury will be looking to recruit a dominant ruckman to replace the departed Jacob Williams (Peel Thunder). Jesse Gribble will lead a midfield bolstered by Daivd Butler (Peel Thunder) with possibly a few more additions to replace Dwayne Griffin and Ben Matthews Herald. Alan Wilson was not sighted pre season so could have also moved on. The Bulldogs regain a couple of wily veterans in Greig Evill, Bryce Bunny and Shane Soulos after a few years away who will assist new coach Jy King in directing the youth of the club. The Bulldogs are a proud club who will be fighting for a top 5 positon, but probably lacking the cattle to take it up to the top 3.

Collie are always quiet pre season and this year has been no exception. Russell Sparks takes over the reins from Clint Swallow with Aaron Marley as his assistant. Kris Ingham leaves to play in the Avon and captain Seth White is in doubt with stress fractures in his back. With shift work playing a big part in who turns out for the Eagles they are an unkown quantity. Having said that State Country representatives Jarrad Martin, Kane Bebbington and Brendan Marshall rarely turn in bad games and with Ryan Brown and Matt Michael returning from injury and South Fremantle respectively the Eagles should not be taken lightly.

Round 1 this week, I was going to do a tipping comp but I doubt there would be enough members joining up. But If I was to tip this week for the league this is how I would be going.

Some surprise wins in round 1

Some close and interesting results from the weekends opening round, looks to be a couple of ripper games this weekend no more so than Souths and Carey Park on Monday. Both sides have changed a lot since last years GF, will look forward to see the result of this one.

I think more sides are now equaly matched across the board. Sure some sides are still better on paper but each team has a group of players who game turn the game on its head

Apart from the Souths v Dons clash, all games were tight. The weather made for some good footy. Good to see Eaton have an early win and from all accounts they played an exciting running attacking game. The Bunbury v Carey Park game was of high standard and heard a few of the old Bunbury stalwards comment it was one of the best viewing games in the swfl for some time, one that Bunbury probably deserved to win.
The result from the HBL v Collie game suggests it was a beauty.
This weeks fixture looks to be a good one. Could well expect another close round in all games.

Sat 24/4
HBL v Bunbury ( BO )
Donnybrook v AMR ( VCMP )
Harvey v Eaton ( HVY )
Sun 25/4

Hard round of tips I would have to agree. Mine are the same as yours but I am going to go for Donnybook at home. Just feel they have to show something and will.

Watched Souths and Carey Park and while the final result looks tight South were in control for most of the day. Carey Park didn't really have a recognised ruckman and when the young bloke with the yellow boots (Ryder?) suffered what looked like a broken arm, Souths were able to dominate the clearances. Beau Tann especially capitalising.
Carey Park were a bit flat and were missing Tom Collins, one of the best defenders in the competiton. I think after 26 consecutive wins this may be the sting in the tail the Panthers need to propel them forward.

Any thoughts corndapark?

Spot on bbayleftwedges,

Carey Park are struggeling in the ruck division and when young Josh Ryder went down with a dislocated elbow Souths capitalised.
The panthers also seemed very predictable when going forward often kicking the ball long to their full forward Matt Martin with souths creating the spare player and rebounded well out of defence. They missed a small crumbing forward with Aaron hill out of the side with a nasty cork.
Tom Collins is very important to Carey Parks defensive structure and was missed.
The loss wont do the panthers any harm with full credit going to souths who were the better team on the day. Still only round 2 and with the competition being even all teams will need to take their chances.
I only managed to pick only one winner this round that being the lions win over the bulldogs. I'm sure old Glen Huon is still shaking, the boomers supporters know how to celebrate a win and have a good time.
I dont understand the bye this week cos of the derby, seems stupid.... anyway.

The bye is a direct result of the introduction of the Harvey Bulls and the South West's dismal showing at Landmark last year. By having 2 general byes throughout the year clubs get 3 weeks break(2 General Byes and Landmark) as they would have with the 9 team comp and it addresses player availability for the Landmark carnival as it is no longer the sole week off for players. No club is allowed to schedule a club function over the carnival weekend, but by having another general bye the week after clubs will be able to enjoy functions with no games that weekend. I think with the carnival falling between the 11th and 12th rounds maybe the bye would have been better utilised at around rounds 5 or 6.

Would be interesting to hear everyones thoughts on the landmark carnival coming up in july. Crandon Keddie as coach is a bit of a surprise. Anyone know the teams in "B" section this year?

Can anyone give the low down of Carey park's Mat Martin?.....He played reserves with EF reserves last weekend and kicked 3.2.....How tall is he?...How old?.....any good? Gaspar is certainly working overtime with his connection at both Carey Park and EF. Though it doesn't appear to be one way....ex EF boys Bongnascia, Wilson and Foster have played a few games for Carey Park

Find a bit of useful info on matty http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=70068

cheers for that, interesting to see where these youngsters turn up.......I read somewhere he got delisted from Ports rookie list at the end of 2009......EF could do with a big bodied forward.....not too sure how long Gaspar is going to be popular at Carey Park if he takes this fella to EF!

Correct he was amongst all the rookies that choc Williams delisted that year. Matt wasn't enjoying his footy in Adelaide ( was playing for West Adelaide in the SANFL ). He was linked to Carey Park through a family member who resides in Bunbury which is how he ended up in W.A. Is a quality player and is still only 20.
Things have worked both way's with Gas over the past few years and he is a very popular member down at the Panthers.
