no reason why they cant build towards 20,000 averages in sydney as the suburban boutique venues undergo upgrades and more teams make use of telstra for blockbuster matches; no reason why the storm cant average 15,000 at their new stadium; no reason why the cowboys wont receive an upgrade in due course; no reason why the warriors wont come good again and bring back their crowds; no reason why the gold coast wont average 20k at their 25k venue.

Boutique venues - Kograh and Liechardt?? LOL More like glorified park grounds. It can't be just those rose coloured glasses you're wearing thats sending you blind

He's making up bullsh*t to try to convince himself that Rugby is better than AFL. Mike Sheahan doesn't have to resort to that to convince himself which is better. he can't honestly believe that, 90,000 fans for 2 interstate teams at the AFL GF, which would be double the record crowd for a rugby GF, do they get bout 40,000? i dunno but its f*ck all compared to AFL. the NRL players never miss goals cos there is no pressure on em cos no-ones watching, no one gives a sh*t

I'll bite, which GF holds the record as the highest attended in this country? ;)

The majority of stuff on this thread is crap.

Mike Gibson is a ******** head and will comment on anything to be cotroversial.

Interesting thing, if you go to Footy tips, which runs tipping competitions on NRL Super 12's and AFL their are abot 100,000 AFL tipsters 50,000 Nrl and 30000 super 12's. Perhaps this is reflection of the type of support each code recieves Australia wide. Regardless of what Mike Gibson is allowed to Sydney is not the whole of Australia.

Rugby League is a great game for what it is and I played first grade Rugby League until I was 27 but it doesn't compare as far as skill level is concerned with Australian Rules Football and Australian rules doesn't compare with soccer.

Pointless argument really.

My dear God. That was hands down the worst article I have ever seen written.

I honestly don't see how anybody could say Rugby is an exciting, "skillful" game. I mean, honestly. I'm not biased like this guy. I don't follow soccer, and that's a fantasticly skilful sport.

But Rugby...

I played some Rugby for the first time a year ago with some guys from New Zealand, who, of course were mad Rugby fans. As soon as I picked up the ball for the very first time, I threw it correctly. And did it time and time again.

People who pick up our ball for the first time have no idea how to deliver it; it's a skill that takes time to master... and that's even BEFORE you learn how to handball correctly and precisely.

i dont understand why people say this, i dont play soccer but if i want i go and play a game against the people who do and i match it with them easily, but footy my number 1 sport i really have to trying harder just to take a mark

Hey i might be wrong, but ive always found any game that doeasn't allow the use of your hands to be harder than those that do.

And all the other parts of the ground.

5000 as it was reported is a bit dissapointing wouldn't you think considering it was Sydney's first ever AFL premiership.

Considering most of us were still yet to return home from Melbourne, it was basically those who could not get down there. Or more casual fans, which in itself is a great sign of the growth potential of my club. As these people can become the members of the future.

Don't forget the nearly 10000 at Albert Park earlier that day as well folks. I was there, with a very sore head.

Glad you enjoyed yourself. It was a good win. :thumbsu:

As for this abominable rl. then well all I am interested in is the pregame entertainment and then the game will be switched off.
I couldn't care less about the game itself.

Yeah...I'm scared that the NRL has had its most successful year in 2005. The future looks bleak I tells ya....

The fact that your spending time defending your code on bigfooty suggests to me that you are scared. I know people who like both games to be honest. Just because Rugby has had a successful year doesn't mean Australian football hasn't gained popularity in Sydney.

The fact is Gibb knows that the Swans win was fantastic for the code in Sydney. And so do you.

The biggest attendance at the MCG was in 1959, when Jimmy Swaggart took a flying mark in goalsquare to defeat Satan by 3 points in front of over 150,000 people.

One quarter of the Australian population turned out to see Swaggart on tour that year. How times have changed.

Sad ,pathetic and delusional idiots like Gibson are one of the reasons I despise anything to do with Thugby.
?

And that is probably why many league supporters despise anything to do with AFL.

It's funny how it works both ways.

He used to do the sports updates on Wide World of Sports years ago (if I remember right) - like Tiffany Cherry on Foxtel.
Didn't the 12th man send him up on the first album?

He hosted the show with Chappelli. The 12th man did a perfect send up of Gibbo passing wind on that Wired World of Sports album. Exactly how Gibbo would have done it.

Rugby requires more skills than just passing a ball.

Lineouts, rucking properly, mauling properly, timing of passes, side stepping, real tackling, scrumaging, positional play etc.

Go and try all those things and then tell us how easy it was.

How long do you reckon it would take to learn?

I'd wager it wouldn't take nearly as long as it does to master half the specialised skills of rugby.

Mike Gibson has always been a bias fool.

Just once again a hack who makes a living out of rl trying to justify why it is a better game than AFL.

Well i was brought up on rl, I played it at school (and Union on the weekends), I went to watch my team (the Bulldogs) most weekends, and loved the game.

I then moved to Melbourne, found AFL and its culture and realised i had been sold a pup with rl. It is so inferior in every way to AFl that it is not funny.

The running, the marking, the high excitement, the huge crowds, the crowd involvement, the absolute devotion of the supporters to the game is something rl cant have and will never have.

Gibson reckons fullbacks and wingers can mark better. The ignorant fool doesn't even understand that unlike in rl the opposition can contest the mark and can spoil. If you touch a rl while he is in the air taking a mark it is a penalty.

Anyway, Gibson just enforces the critisism of the Sydney style of play. Funnily enough we dont hear a peep out of Gibson last year Port v Lions.

So Gibbo, go and enjoy your poor mans "superbowl" this Sunday night (like NFL) with your ring for the winner (just like NFL) with your offence (used to be attack), with your over time for draws (just like the NFL) and your cliched tipping of the bucket of Gaterade over the winning coach (just like NFL).

Mabye the dreaded Gibbo feels a bit insecure about a truly Australian game being so popular while his imported English game that has morphed into a poor version of American Football with its imitation traditions, poor crowds, and poorly skilled no neck meatheads.
flipping brilliant put that in an email and send it the flipping clown LOL :D:D:D

I will give you my unbiased view (and i am not even an australian), AFL is superior than RL in every way.I only watch AFL on tv (i watch NRL and union as well).I havent been to melbourne (lived in sydney for 3 years), but i have found RL slightly more interesting than watching a paint dry.Skills are horrible and then empty stadiums doesnt make it look any better.I love AFL.
Go crows :)
