Just waiting for swans supporter to blame the umpires for their 81 point defeat. They we in doubt the umpires cost them the 2016 premiership after a 22 point defeat. LOL
Are you saying the swans are throwing a tantrum?

Chucking the baby out with the bathwater?

Youve seen a flag…… puts you ahead of stk and freo
Yeah high bar stuff. Nice lil segue for a dig at freo btw

Carl and Ess have more flags and yet we've played in 14 more GF's than the nearest and still don't have the most.

We've got the most losses by a long long way.

Somethin I should be proud of?

Sydney's/South Melbourne's record in grand finals is pretty poor to say the least..

As South Melbourne... they won 3 grand finals while losing 8.

As Sydney... they've won 2 grand finals while losing 5.

Only Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton have lost as many or more grand finals.. and these are the three most successful clubs in V/AFL history when it comes to winning premierships.

Why haven't the Swans come under media scrutiny for their record in grand finals??
Why mention south melbourne? different team in non professional state league from 40 plus years ago. Completely irrlevant.

Didn't realise Pies were 27 points up at 3 qtr time in the 77 draw.

WoW

That's a crazy scoreline that game.

I did notice back then... top 5... Pies win 1st final and straight into the GF.

At least you have to win min. 2 finals these days to make it

J’accuse moi?

Fitzroy still exist in VAFA, lions and bears did not merge.

The roys were cornered, co erced, forced whatever term you want to use to surrender their AFL licence and Brisbane were able to adopt the lion moniker - hence the Brisbane lions.
IMO it's disrespectful to call it a "rebrand" or "marketing trick" or whatever our friend Roy claims it is, the merger document is pretty clear: the Brisbane Bears took control of the operations of the Fitzroy Lions, which is exactly what happens in a merger.

A new club playing in the VAFA, ten years (?) later, even with the same directors as the old Fitzroy club, doesn't change that IMO.

We need to stop winning prelims.

Problem solved.
There is a lot of truth in this statement.

Over the last 20 years, Sydney has played in 8 Preliminary Finals, winning 6 (leading to a 2-4 record in Grand Finals) and losing 2 (2003 and 2013).

Over the past 20 years, Geelong has played in 13 Preliminary Finals, winning 6 (leading to a 4-2 record in Grand Finals) and losing 7 (2004, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021).

So Sydney has a good record in Preliminary Finals but a poor record in Grand Finals, while Geelong has a good record in Grand Finals but a poor record in Preliminary Finals.

If Sydney had beaten Geelong on Saturday (and that's a big if considering the margin), both teams would have 3-3 records in Grand Finals over the past 20 years. It is amazing how one result can radically change the perception of one team against another.

Roylion will correct me if I'm wrong here.

That’s correct. That it is called a ‘merger’ is merely a marketing strategy employed by the AFL in order to encourage a Melbourne supporter base for the Brisbane Bears / Lions. All that happened was that the Brisbane Bears rebranded with AFL owned IP such as the Fitzroy lion and acquired some bits and pieces of a club that was exiting the AFL. The AFL also gave the Bears pre-draft access to a sixth of Fitzroy’s 1996 list, all of whom were uncontracted due to Fitzroy exiting the AFL. Even the AFL themselves admit that the Brisbane Bears and the Brisbane Lions are the same club.

Fitzroy went into recess as a football club but maintained the same board of directors, the same shareholders (of which I am one) began taking on financial members from the end of 1997 and began sponsoring clubs such as the Coburg Lions (1999–2000) for naming rights (remember the Coburg-Fitzroy Lions in the VFL?) as well building further revenue streams such as producing Fitzroy merchandise between 1997 and 2008, running a bricks and mortar merchandise and memorabilia shop and so on. Fitzroy then began fielding football sides once again for the first time since 1996 back at their traditional home at Brunswick Street.

Fitzroy Football Club will be 140 years old on September 26th 2023.

Also people forget despite Geelong losing those GFs in the late 80s/early 90s they were so exciting and attacking.

92 they were insane. Kicked 25-30+ a few times.

Agreed, how good the Cats were in that period gets glossed over in light of recent events. We had a happy knack of rolling them at Kardinia park there for a while in the 90s, god knows how though, they were a miles better side.

It's a good point, basically you want to look at the team's relative strength within the seasons to see if they're converting the opportunities they should be.

e.g. In the GF Sydney were outsiders in 2012, faves in 14 and 16, outsiders in 22. Off that a 2-2 record would be "fair", a loss on the weekend was not diabolical in terms of expectations (the margin was but there's no % in finals)...

Good players - real good players win you premiership

Jereny Cameron - the Cats - that is why we won that elusive flag

One thing cost Coll the 77 flag - Phil Carman who was in senational form - stupidly struck Tuck in the 2nd semi and got 2 weeks

So Carmen their best player - a real match winner doesnt play - thats what cost Coll that premiership - i think they would have been alot more than 27 up at 3qtr time if Carmen

The form Carmen was in at the time - it would be like Chris Judd missing one of your Eagles GFs

Thanks for clarifying as I always thought Brisbane Lions were a rebranded/relocated Fitzroy, much like Sydney Swans being a rebranded/relocated South Melbourne.

Do you know whether or not Port Power and Port Magpies are the same club?
I ask Crows supporters and they tell me the Power and Port Magpies are two different clubs, while Port supporters claim them to be one club, so who knows.

AFL marketing. The Brisbane Lions are actually the Brisbane Bears.

As far as I'm aware the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club in the SANFL was a separate legal entity to Port Adelaide Football Club in the AFL from 1997 - 2010. In November 2010 Port Adelaide formalised the off-field merger between the AFL entity and the SANFL entity.
