Sydney's record in grand finals needs scrutinising

I feel like the Swans have escaped scrutiny.. huge damage to the brand.
Remember for lots of people, especially in NSW, this is the only game people watch all year.
Broadcasters would be pissed off and set NSW fans footy back years.

Yes it is. I'm now reflecting on my continued involvement as supporter. At days end you simply must give max effort. Anything less is BS. Yes I get loss aversion but you must force yourself through it. To have a pressure rating in 150s in a GF is very poor. There has to be accountability..Roos is right.

They should trade Chad Warner imo this year with 1 year to go since, many clubs rumors are convinced he going next year and out of contract he will be worth less + next year's draft isn't as good, they should try get into this draft.

Yes I agree. Talented when he is "on". But I've always had concerns that he lacks consistency and chooses his times all designed to be showy rather than do what was required. Id rather Rowbottom every day of the week. He will be never let you down. If we had 22 of him we win GF easily

What's disturbing I've read that they had a sports psychologist helping them leading in.....trying to make it just like any other game. That's just a terrible misfire. For a start sack them!!!

The problem is heaps of NSW NRL fans will tune in for the GF and see a one sided game and just confirm the bias it's a shit game.

I live in Vic and last year I watched the NRL grand final and it was close and exciting so it game me a more positive view of the code overall.

Swans really have screwed the pooch.

Do you think there is more performance anxiety for Sydney, because people in NSW only tune in for the grand final?

I think we just got found out. I was surprised we beat GWS in that first final.

Will be interesting to see how the Storm go on Sunday. Similar story. Finished on top and now head into a GF knowing it's probably the only NRL game most Melbourne people watch all year.

It’s not even a week later and the media are reverting to fluffing up Sydney and it’s players coaches

Heard tonight on SEN how Luke Parker’s leadership would be excellent for a club ‘in the window’

Puleeze has been a quality player but has been a leader in all Sydney’s fails

Maybe th attraction of north to Parker is no more finals to lose

Offered more than most of his team mates last weekend to be fair.

Only stands up when grand finals are finished, and I mean he played knowing he wanted out too

I think the media if they are letting up (I am trying not to follow it to be honest) Is a bad thing for the club, they need pressure on some of the failures

Just like Port of the early 2000s. In finals …mentally weak. My dad says as much and he is a Swans supporter. Why is this contentious?

All our losses this year were oppositions bringing high level pressure on that bs fox rating thing.
The grand final brings the ultimate pressure, they go to water before it starts, take nothing away from the Lions, who gave them 0 chance to settle

Bobbed up and kicked 3 goals late in the last quarter. What the **** game were you watching.
To be fair, he laid six tackles for the game (the most of any Swans player), keeping in mind he spent most of his time on the forward line. If others had offered that level of output, the game looks quite different (i.e. less embarrassing).

I think you make a good point. Our game is predicated on high risk quick ball movement hand pass chains through the corridor taking uncontested marks on the back in F50 entry or goals from the final link midfielder. We don't control the clearances instead relying on relentless pressing to create turnovers. So in a huge game like GF if the pressure is on and we have choking to start it's difficult to take the risk of the corridor chain pass links or high pressure 200+ takle pressure. Both are the first things to drop off a little from stage fright. Then the malaise becomes self fullfilling.

In short we thrive on a calmness to take the huge risks of both to create our platform. You don't have calmness in a GF.

In the GF our game pressure rating overall was 156 which was very low and handed the game to lions on a platter

Unless the Swans can get consistency from the game plan it's destined to fail at critical moments. You are right, we nearly gave up the game to GWS too which supports this theory.

The game plan is so very successful during H & A season because of the talent of the midfielders..To give it up is hard. Against good teams they clog the corridor to limit opportunities forcing us to make contested F50 entries which isn't our strength. if you give up clearances and rely upon turnovers as we do then our progress is halted when you can't get those turnovers. Thats why many teams now chip and reset, chip and reset slowing the play to negate turnovers in good field position forcing contested entries.

This is a dilemma.

The game plan only works late in the game when superior fitness allows us to create the space needed to release the brakes for the chain links..That's why we come with a wet sail but struggle early in games when it's clogged and contested.

1991 is ancient history now and the Eagles accept that they were outplayed in the finals in 1991.
But in 1991 the Eagles finished the season on top with a percentage of 165 and conceded about five hundred points less that season than the second best defensive team. After that grand final the Eagles tweaked the game plan with less resources dedicated to defence and won two of the next three grand finals.
Huge start by the Eagles that season. After they thrashed the Hawks in round 7 though, their numbers for the rest of the season were inferior, so they'd been caught up to well before the finals. In 1992, they only spent three weeks in the entire season in the top 3, were out of the six midway, and both for and against were worse than anything they did the previous year. However, in the years after 1991, other teams got better, and it wasn't just a three-way between the Hawks, Eagles and Cats. And as you say, the tweaks worked...

Thing is you KNOW with the two teams playing in the NRL decider with almost 100 per cent certainty that they will both turn up. If the roosters or sharks had have somehow snuck through there was a huge chance one of them would have turned in a shocker.

The gap between Penrith and Melbourne’s best and worst games is negligible.

Won’t do anything with that dud Longmire in the coaches box, should’ve moved him on years ago

Most overrated person in football

Wish he’d F off back to North Melbourne
Ross Lyon is the most overrated; he wouldn’t get a job in any other football code with his record
