Essendon are sounding out former North Melbourne CEO Carl Dilena for their vacant CEO job.
The highly regarded former Kangaroos boss only started at St Kilda as their operating officer in October but the club is aware he is a potential candidate for the Bombers’ job.
Dilena played 33 AFL games starting his career at Fitzroy where he was a teammate of new Saints’ coach Ross Lyon before joining North Melbourne where he played 10 games.
He was chief executive at the Kangaroos while new Essendon coach Brad Scott was coaching North Melbourne and was considered an excellent performer albeit one with a relatively low profile.
Dilena first joined the North Melbourne board as a director helping them restore financial stability after the AFL’s push to relocate the club to the Gold Coast failed.
He was then CEO from 2013-2019 helping the club move to a position where they were debt-free with sound financial management.
Ben Amarfio replaced Dilena as the CEO at the end of that year with the club having had three coaches since 2020. Amarfio resigned in October.
Essendon re-embarked on a search for a new CEO after Andrew Thorburn chose to resign just one day into the role when it became clear he could not be both chair of the faith-based City on a Hill organisation and the Bombers due to controversial comments made by the organisation’s pastor. His appointment came after long-serving CEO Xavier Campbell resigned when the board sacked coach Ben Rutten.
AFL executive Travis Auld has been linked to the job but with the AFL’s search for a new CEO ongoing he is likely to remain at the league while that process continues and former Collingwood CEO Mark Anderson is also a potential candidate.
Essendon, North Melbourne, Collingwood and the AFL are all searching for new CEOs with the Kangaroos closing in on making an appointment.
Geelong football manager Simon Lloyd is among the final candidates for the North Melbourne position.

The last 20 years has been so bad for them that NMFC 2014-2016 looks like a golden age, apparently. That they aspire to recreate it is just sad, and I actually may even be feeling a touch of true sympathy. So the fanbase wants to get out of mediocrity. In response Barham & co hire a bunch of people from a mediocre performing team.
Ok then.

You obviously got it to write the article in the style of a proper AFL accredited journo too.Asked gpt-3 to write an essay in the style of moral panic about the essendon football club.
... and the club was banned from the 2016 AFL Season. ...
That makes me think that some of the AFL news sites like the Age Real Footy etc. are likely to be AI bot generated. The HUN, not so much as the standard isn't up to par.You obviously got it to write the article in the style of a proper AFL accredited journo too.
