Take your hand off my kids ipads

Because of lazy teachers who dont care if kids play on their phones in class as long as they are silent. A friend of mine had a meeting at her school and the school admitted a lot of the year 7 kids watch pr0n on their phones in class, and they didnt know how to stop it.

Well, morons, tell your teachers to take the phones off the kids during the day and give them back at the end of the day. Do random drop-ins and ensure the teachers are doing their job.
I mean thats quite literally what was happening in the example given. That was literally happening and still got circumvented.

You think kids aren't going to hand in an old phone and keep a new phone handy. Were you born yesterday?

Are we really making its someones job and paying someone (taking away time from their actual job) to go monitor if teachers are taking phones from kids. rofl.

Look out, fun police coming through

Yeah thats what this is about. Remember, these are the people who in theory will look after us when we are old. Unless they go the Brave New World path.

You think kids are really so bright they can get away with using a phone in class, if the teacher is actually watching?

And yes, it takes no effort to take the phones off the kids. If it was enforced it would stop being a thing. My kid's school has no issues because everyone knows the school is vigilant about it. Kids will push as far as they can, but if they find their phone being taken away constantly they will learn.

Social media is absolutely toxic and a mental health issue for young people who aren't fully developed (and plenty of adults who are fully developed).

IMO it's a parental issue, not a government one.
Social media is just a channel for communication. Its not to blame for bullies anymore then the local train station is. And It can also be a channel that helps support mental health by keeping friends and family in contact who otherwise could not be and helping people find groups of people with similar interests that are too niche to find at school or work. It can help create friends. It can help give a voice to people who dont have power and it can help co-ordinate these people to drive real action and change.

People always blame new technology for problems and never focus on the actual cause of those problems nor the overwhelming positives those technologies can provide. When i was young it was tvs and computers that were evil blights on society causing mental health issues in kids. Go back far enough in time and people blamed books for the same thing.

You appear to know very little about how social media works and the deliberately addictive nature behind their design.

It's not just a channel for communication at all. Maybe it was 20 or so years ago, but times have changed.

Get off the internet and go play some sport is such a bullshit boomer old man attitude to have.

Yet would help the mental health of every single person who is otherwise glued to their phone scrolling SM lol. Literally every single pleb with a phone addiction would benefit from going outside and exercising. Boomer attitude is right on this one

Kids are always going to do their version of dumb shit, I was breaking bones crashing BMX bikes and getting scammed on Runescape. The generation before will have their own stories.

I mean, I hadn't bothered getting myself a VPN before now. Can somebody explain if I get a US VPN, can I access US FTA TV channels, or can i Get a VPN which gives me access to both BBC/4 and NPR?

I guess I'm also going to have to install the VPN on the kids' devices when I, as their parent, decide they're old enough for social media.

Don't forget, this is the same ALP GOvt who announced the Government Internet Filter and after 5 years, Stephen Conroy had to admit it was all a terrible failure and they abandoned it.

They already have a tender out for 'ID verification services' I saw on Twitter. It'll be a private mob (Albo's mates no doubt) taking individuals money for an ID check as if that check cannot already be done with data gathered.

Will fail spectacularly if they go through with it
The class action for when a data leak inevitably happens will bankrupt a government easy

The LNP have lured the ALP into a real implementation debacle here.

The fact Albanese has walked right into it Mr Magoo style just highlights how much these ALP leaders are better at factional fighting to get to the top than the politics of leadership.

There's a cost of living crisis and this is what these people concentrate on? Are they completely braindead?

The attack dogs on this will be simple: 1984, Orwellian, giving up ID and private information, it's just a free hit for the opposition. Who the hell thought this is a good idea? God Labor are useless, vote independent, definitely not the LNP nutjobs with the ex-cop Nazi

Antcic?, Rennik?, Hanson?

I would be more worried about kids simple getting addicted to ipads .

Our 8 yo now has a school one , they use it in class and for learning . So basically from leaving to school to getting home she has it .
Obviously beyond that it's up to us as parents to monitor and control use .

We have had a case of a parent removing the ipad from the child , as retaliation the child reported the parents to her teacher as her being beaten at home .
Parents then get a visit from CPS the next night.
Child came clean after a few hours of the parents being questioned as making it up.
That's extreme but it is a tightrope as a parent at the minute.
