I guess a second gather round rotating between NSW, WA, Queensland and Tassie
two gather rounds a season - rebranded to the following

  • gather west - shared between WA and SA (where games are located entirely in one state or shared between the 2 to help with ground management)
  • gather north - shared between qld and nsw (ditto above)

the introduction of tassie adds another option that could be used to break up the monotony of the above

[edit] also like the idea of teams only playing each other once ..... plus the above 2 rounds

State government tourism agencies are the ones paying the AFL for the right to host Gather Round. No way will it be shared. And I doubt the AFL will want two of them a year as it dilutes the impact of the first one.

What happens if CA they won't play games there IF there is a roof?
I would challenge and call them out as to why not - seeing as on all the 5 test venues on the mainland, test cricket is routinely played into the late afternoon with the stands shadows reaching and then going over the pitch - this includes the shadows caused by the MCG translucent part of the stand roof, with its slats, just like Hobart will have. Yet none of this is considered anything more than any real problem at any of these grounds - play just continues on.

The same applies to any form of limited overs games like T/20 played in the late afternoon at all these venues. But if it’s now a problem, does this mean that cricket won’t be played at any of our current test venues in the late afternoon!

So why the cricket authorities suddenly have a supposed problem now with the new Hobart stadium is all a mystery.

Cricket Tasmania have essentially called out the design firm saying they can't offset shadows created by the roof. A series of "Track Led lighting" can't overpower the sun and the complexity of the roof design will make any daytime event unwatchable on TV. You can see the effect below at the NZ roofed stadium. Diffusion can only do so much but the criss-cross shadow pattern will look horrible on TV.

Throwing it out there - if Cricket Tasmania runs Bellerive, are their objections to the new stadium part of a ploy for a better financial deal? (More cash for a new cricket centre, I mean.)

Something similar happened when the WA Football Commission missed out on the contract to run Optus (they had been running Subi for years) and suddenly they started cracking the shits and threatening that the Eagles and Dockers would stay at Subi.

Because the developers recently released an updated shadow model for the playing surface, I'm guessing it wasn't what CA had been shown or assured of in the past. If the roof casts a strong hash pattern of shadows that move across the pitch I can understand their concerns. I wish the modeling would be released to the public so we could make our own minds up. I would imagine the ICC would be the final oversight body, as it's an international sport.

You could rotate between whoever is willing to pay. The problem is you either have two gather rounds or none when you have an odd number of sides, unless you want an uneven draw (H&A)

Interesting that the AFL haven't tried swinging their dick around in Brisbane demanding a roof. Rains more in Brisbane than it does in Hobart.

Tougher to bully pissant governments when the IOC is involved.

It's not the same. You know it.

No, it's not the same. Thats's exactly the point I made.

The AFL can bully the Tasmanian Government, it can't bully the IOC with the Queensland Government as a proxy.

There is no reason for Tasmania's roof to be a condition of entry to the league, especially if cricket can't even use it during the day.

The Lions have pretty much been gifted a free stadium. Brand new, with an extra 26k.

NRL fans are pissed at how good a deal the Lions have got.

The roof isn't necessary in Hobart, but they are very different situations.

Both respective governments are majority funding the respective stadiums, to be utilised by the respective teams under a lease arrangement, both in cities badly in need of new stadia to account for this era of modern, central "entertainment venues."

Tasmania, and the AFL as a result, will have more oversight of Mac Point than Brisbane will have at the Gabba going forward, and it's likely to have a better lease deal going forward.

I'm still failing to grasp the point you're trying to make, and I'm surprised by the number of Tasmania team supporters who became welded to a roof (glued and screwed I guess, given it's timber) that from the AFL's perspective was designed to be an albatross.

The AFL wants a team in Brisbane, regardless of whether their stadium has a roof. Congrats for figuring that out.

14,000 crowd tonight for a blockbuster game, what a shambles. Not going to be any better for a team that will be anchored to to bottom of the ladder
Tasmanians will turn up a lot more for a team they actually care about

GWS average attendance at home games since they started was 10k. Just sayin.
Hobart indoor stadium with a Tasmanian member crowd will sell out IMO.
Be a great weekend away to watch an indoor game next to the harbour, get dinner on the harbour, stay at Salamanca, climb the mountain etc.
