Devils form

I thought they were awful in the first half but picked up alot in the 2nd before fading in the last 10 mins of the game.

No doubt they will be better for it and predicting they will win 9 games this year and a % of about 91.

There is certainly a better feeling around the group now that it's a stand alone club again.

Cassidy looks like a goer, got caught a few times on his right but looks like he has some go. He almost kicked an "almost footy legends" goal. Great snap out of the pack from memory. Considering the Pies had Burns and a few others it was a good first up hit out. They are a pretty young side and I think everyone would do well to get behind them. This is our Elite side!

Heard from a good source that Ian Callinan will be back next year.

I agree that they were competitive around the ground, but I simply cannot see where the goals are going to come from. They'll win 6 at most I reckon.

I reckon even six is generous!! Three wins is my tip.

No forwards, no quality ruckman, a lack of talls in general, no star midfielders, ordinary leaders and a poor coach.

I would like to see them return to the glory days of a few years ago but it won't be happening this year. Good luck to 'em.

Huonville beat Dosa by about 45 pts. Not a bad game. They played 6 20 min 6ths. Both sides had players out. Dosa started well kicking 8 to 2 then 4 to 2 in the second. No injuries of note and both sides felt the heat.

Any other games????

Caught a couple of other games on the weekend namely North Hobart vs Sth. Launceston (saw the 1st half anyway) and Glenorchy vs Mariners on Sunday.

The 1st half of the Nth Hob. and Sth Laun. match was a scrappy affair with Nth Hob. leading at the main change by a few goals. The main thing I took from this game was the massive drop-off in standard and intensity from the Devils v Collingwood game which had just finished. It just looked very amateurish which was a bit disappointing. Although Nth. Hob. were in control on the scoreboard Sth Laun. were playing the more attractive football. I didn't know a single one of their players so can't provide any comments on them. Robbie Devine, looking more portly than ever, had already bagged a couple in usual style but there weren't too many stand-outs for Nth. Tommy James found some space and easy touches as he does and DeGooyer was well held and almost kickless 'til that point. Nth. didn't appear to be missing too many Senior players aside from Geappen, Hall, Rae and maybe T. Brown and their lack of talls and ruck options stood out. I must say I expected Nth. to be a bit more impressive so much so that I gave the second half a miss.

The Glenorchy v Mariners game was a little more entertaining despite the heat. Glenorchy seemed to field a relatively strong line-up and controlled the game all day eventually winning by 3-4 goals. They made the most of their bigger bodies against the smaller Mariners, although the Mariners didn't take a backward step and seemed to be dishing out a bit of lip too. Brad Curran and Foale dominated in the back half all day and Hunt kicked 4-5 goals for them up forward. The Mariners seemed a little light on for height but I was told that a couple of their bigger kids weren't available. Glenorchy appears set for another strong year.

Oh, and Barge when should we expect the next Dear Diary entry?? The last one was so riveting I have had to tide myself over by re-reading it over and over again .......

he's actually thinking about doing a blog called "A day in the life of THE BARGE" we'll post the link when it's up and running.

See what ya think of this, Puddleduck:

1) There will be no more diary entries on here. Such was the popularity of the other day's entry, they are now only available via subscription on www.bargesdiary.com.au

2) I'll be very surprised if Callinan comes back, just my very humble opinion.

3) Claremont play New Norfolk at Abbotsfield Park this Thursday night, should be interesting to say the least given about 6 or so Eagles from '07 have now changed the colours of their feathers.

I'll be signing autographs on the night too if you're keen, Flood.

and now, for the big one .........

4) This from a very, very good source - trust me, ya's would take notice if I named the source - Cresswell will get the lemonade and sars if they're 0-4 after the first month.

Just remember - Barge loves each and every one of you!

They play Werribee this Saturday @ Bellerive noon start. It's true re Wingnut Callinan coming back next year.

They sure could do with some older heads hey.

wait until u see this lachy george on saturday. he is a jet in the midfield.

and ur being way harsh. bongetti kicked 60 odd goals in about 15 games in TAC cup last yr, was named in all oz side and was very unlucky not to get drafted. havent seen anything of one of the plummer boys but u throw him in with rowan andrews and a couple of decent talls and ruckman right there.

I agree Bonghetti looked good, but I doubt how well he will go against bigger bodies of AFL-listed players and besides him there are not too many evenues to goal.

A few of these comments are very pesimistic. I hope they stick it up a few of you blokes..... particularly those of you who are underqualified to even comment on mini league

Re: Devils form

Flood said "No forwards, no quality ruckman, a lack of talls in general, no star midfielders, ordinary leaders and a poor coach."

So Flood what is a good coach in you eyes? Give Cressa a go. The set up last year was crazy with training and a very young Nth Melbourne list. How would you have gone?

Sticking with my prediction of 9 wins.

dont know if anyone really cares but heard that latrobe beat devonport today i thought with there ressies winning the flag last year they might be able to cover there losses but doesnt look like it early.

Nah doesn't look like it, they'll have to rely on Phillip Crowden again to kick another 100+ goals this season, which will be hard to do. Latrobe look set for another top season. (P.S. I'm not surprised that Latrobe won today)

Another side that looked sharp was Launceston, they had North L'tons measure about 15 minutes into the last quarter, 22.14-146 to 9.8-62.

Other than Crawford, Littlejohn and Spencer who were serviceable, they (North) had no-one else really. Will be heavliy reliant on run and carry for their goals this year, as they have no real big target up forward.
Launceston will benefit lots from Derbyshire and Stephens returning from the Devils, Derbyshire kicked 7.5, Stephens was solid, Ellis was solid in the midfield, Jake Terry had three goals, while Brian Finch was again too strong up forward. They look set for the three peat.

Oh and FYI, my predictions for 2008 NTFL are:
Launceston, Ulverstone, Burnie, North L'ton, Smithton, Devonport, Latrobe, Penguin, South L'ton, Wynyard, East Devonport.

Three matches tommorrow:
East Devonport v Smithton at Girdlestone Park
Penguin v Wynyard at Pirtek Oval
Ulverstone v Burnie at Victoria Street (6:30pm start)

2000 under Steve Reissig and a couple of seasons under Ashleigh Brown were the last ones (around 02/03 or 03/04). Last year 5th place when no-one (even myself) thought that, I'll admit I had them for about 8th-9th at the start of last year.
