First draft of the team song.

Sung to the tune of 'The Road to Gundagai':

There's a team that must be seen
We wear the Red and Green
We are the Tassie Devils team

It takes a good team to stop us
A better one to wop us
And Victoria know it's true

Cos' if they ever beat us
We'll fightback and get mean
Cos' were playing for our colours
The famous Red and Green

Down the Roos and the Blues
Joining others who will lose
We are the Tassie Devils team
Who are we?
We are the mighty Devils team...

The aggression towards victoria is honestly the perfect vibe given the current state of the tassie team situation

Its would be the devils. That won the poll for the team name for those state team names. Boring and safe and easy.

My bigger question is what should the team wear. I prefer they wouldn't use a state top.
State colours, fine, but not the Map. And they shouldn't use the state name, its a club side not a rep side. State branding is for state versus state.

It's actually a reference to the famous 1960 and 1990 matches where Tasmania beat Victoria...!

Seriously?
The early name for Tassie was Van Diemans land after a Dutch explorer who "discovered it".Don't they teach anything in schools these days?
The explorer was Abel Tasman. Van Diemen helped finance the expedition, governor of the Dutch East Indies (essentially modern Indonesia) I think.

Using Van Diemens Land rather than Tasmania isn't a bad idea. A bit long though. Van Diemens Land Convicts. Still shorter than Greater Western Sydney Giants.

I don't really follow the "they can't be named after a state" argument. We already have some clubs named after cities, some after suburbs, and others named after general regions. Naming another after a state is hardly rocking the boat of consistency.

Big no on any use of Van Diemens Land, on account of our island not being named that in over 150 years lol

yeah, I am against the map. That seems to be a 50/50 split down here. It is our heritage but we need to build on that and not steal it. It is team-based in Tasmania, not playing as Tasmania.

State colours, great. Would go more with green as the main colour with red as the 2nd with little yellow. Not a great colour combo(green and red) but unique as the JJ's seem to have gone the Green and Yellow and white.

The problem with the name is that anything else causes issues. If you call the team Southern Devils(which I hate), it plays into the North/South stuff. Plus, the government probably want Tasmania in the title. I get the feel but there is really nothing else.

Tasman sailed from Batavia (Jakarta). Named if after the governor of the Dutch East Indies at the time. The name was slowly disused over time, as it sounded a lot like demons and we were the Convict capital with a bad reputation.

The V.D. Convicts. What could go wrong with a name like that?

Well aside from the reality there will never be another Tasmanian team in our lifetime and probably ever and the fact State of Origin contests have disappeared with the dinosaurs, naming the team the Hobart Harriers or the Launceston Lizards will only stoke the already prevalent South/North rivalry - and as the 'Hobart' Hurricanes discovered you'll then need to spend a small fortune on marketing to dilute the Hobart reference...

Naming it after a city (or suburb) like most teams wouldn’t work in this case because you’d run the risk of alienating people not in that city. The only alternative I can think of would be to name it the Southern Whatevers, the NBL seemed to start down that path with the Southern Huskies but pivoted away.

It’s a team that will represent all of Tasmania, that’s how it’s being driven and sold, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be called Tasmania.

I don't see the name "Tasmania" being an issue.

Plenty of sports teams in North America use their state/province name. Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Tennessee Titans, Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Colorado Avalanche, Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona Coyotes, Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, BC Bears, Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Closer to home, the NSW Waratahs and Queensland Reds aren't purely state representative teams in the rugby.

But if it remains an issue, call them the Tasmanian Devils, and always have their whole name said, like the Western Bulldogs.

Given this has already been included in the official Tasmanian license submissions thus far, I doubt anyone will seek to engage some loony from Saatchi & Saatchi to create anything different. Moreover, enclosed is AFL's registration of the trade mark/logo.

The AFL also submitted a trademark application for the Gold Coast Guards, among other things. Meaningless.

And I suppose GWS won't wear orange, because look...
